I felt panic rise thru me as i heard the barking behind me get louder. Why was i stupid enough to get caught stealing a pathetic apple. It would of been better if it had been a million dollars, but not this. I turned into another alley and for a quick moment heard the barks of the mechanical hounds get quieter, but that didn't last. I wanted to stop and just give up and start crying but my body wouldn't let me. The punishment for any crime no matter how small or big or who had done it was death. That was why crime was decently low but when it did happen it didn't go unnoticed. In under an hour the police had names, places, and motive. Even if the motive was a good and heartwarming one they were killed. That was how our leader saw it and i sorta agreed with him. The only thing wrong with his idea was the taxes were high and the job rate low. The only people who got paid nicely were the police, but not anyone could join. Only the best of the best could join and most of the people who did were ex military.

I turned yet another corner and saw my doom. A brick wall stood in my way and i couldn't scale it. I looked around for a chance to escape but there wasn't one. I turned around and saw the hounds turn that corner and howl. I felt all hope disappear as the police finally caught up to their hounds. Smiling they walked up to me without even saying anything. I saw one of them pull out a gun and grin a devil grin .He then said "Crime doesn't pay around here." and pulled the trigger. The bullet hit me and i cried out in pain. They laughed and started walking away. They didn't even stop to check if i was alive or dead. Crime didn't pay at all, instead it only killed. The only thing was it wouldn't kill me. I smiled as i heard their laughter fade and almost laughed myself. I did crime and lived and if only they knew. While i didn't recommend it for anyone else since crime is bad anywhere, it was my thing. I unzipped my old jacket and looked at my bullet proof jacket. I smiled at where the bullet had hit near my heart and how i was alive. Crime only payed for me but that was for now. I got up and started to walk away. Crime does pay but it depends on the person and it wasn't always the criminal. Those police men were in for it when i showed that i was alive to the world. I started to walk away from the spot where i had been shot and thought of my next crime in this pathetic world where crime kills.
