My Visit to Tiruvalla
It was in the year 2009 when I was in the third year of my course I decided to visit Kerala and saw ‘God’s own country’ which is the other name for kerala known for its natural beauty. Since there was no leave for us that time I decided to go to Kerala during the weekend and taking two days extra leave as Saturday and Sunday was enough to see all the places I planned to see. Before leaving from college I informed all my friends in kerala regarding my visit to kerala so that they can come in time and receive me from the railway station as I was going by train. Friday night I took my train for Tiruvalla (Mumbai CST to Kanyakumari) which was the only train available for that place. Next day early morning around 5 O’ clock I reached Tiruvalla railway station. There I saw my friend’s father who came to receive me with his white colour car; I looked for my friend but she was not there, only her father came to receive me. on my question he said she is still sleeping, with that he added a few more words that usually Kerala’s girls will wake up late. Though early to bed is there for them.
After one hour I reached my friend’s home where I saw she was waiting to welcome me along with her mother as I was the first north-east guest to visit their house. her house was the first house I visited in kerala. Her name was Sasikala Sharma; she was so beautiful even her eyes were so cute. After introducing me to everyone she took my luggage and kept it in her room where I was supposed to stay for three days.
I took a bath and got freshened up then went for breakfast with her and her family members, though breakfast was not like north Indian breakfast, but I ate it. seeing my face she came to know that I don’t like that food. She served me different varieties of sweets and snacks along with banana which was red in colour, which I saw for the first time in my life because banana usually will be green or yellow in colour.
Since I was tired because of the night journey I went for sleeping and slept nicely for an hour. When I woke up I saw a little girl there named Gayathri who came to see me, though that was the first time we were seeing each other, but we knew each other by phone conversation. After a chat we had lunch together. that was my favourite lunch, ‘chapatti and cauliflower greavy’ which was prepared by Sasikala’s mother. she didn’t know cooking so her mother only used to cook food.
In evening Gayathri and Sasikala took me to one old temple in their place as they belong to Brahman family. there I was stopped by the Brahman while entering the temple as I was wearing shirt and banyan and I was asked to remove my banyan and shirt because that was their culture. he said I must do that if I want to enter the temple. I had no other choice to do it because Gayathri and Sasikala had already entered inside and I was stopped outside. finally I accepted their culture and went inside where I did prayer with them and then came outside with some sweets which Brahman gave to us inside. After eating sweets we took auto and came to her home.
That night we planned for next day program which was to visit Alleppy and do boating there. after dinner I went for sleeping as did they; but it was very difficult to sleep because of mosquitoes bite because of power cut at night time which was for four hours. Next morning after breakfast, me, Gayathri, Sasikala and her father took a bus for Alleppy. As I could not sleep nicely I was still feeling sleepy. after getting into the bus I took my seat next to Gayathri and I slept until we reached Alleppy. After reaching there we went for boating as per our plan and enjoyed sea-shore where we saw big waves were arriving towards us. It was evening there and it was the time to return from there. We took bus from Alleppy bus stand, which was a government bus. as usual again I slept in bus next to Gayathri and this time even she did.
It was night seven O’ clock when we reached her house where her mother was waiting for us for dinner. we had dinner together and went for rest as we were so tired. that was the last night for me because next morning I was supposed to return from Tiruvalla. Her father came to drop me to railway station. I always miss her and her family, being close to them. One thing I found there was Kerala’s girls don’t know cooking except for a few, I have not seen any girl cooking food, usually their mother prepared food at home. That is too bad to see in Kerala’s girls, but Kerala’s boys are quite smarter than girls, they are even good in cooking. But Kerala’s girls are hard working; they never give up though they fail most of the time. Their hard work leads to their destiny and brings success to them. They make their dream to come true through their hard work and effort.
I would like to visit Kerala again if I get an opportunity in the future. Kerala is the state which I like most in South India, after Tamilnadu, which is the most peaceful and fastly developing state in every aspect.
My Visit to Guruvayur Temple
It was in the year 2010 I decided to visit Trichur district of Kerala and see Lord Krishna in ‘Guruvayur’ temple. Fortunately, we got leave for a week which was winter vacation for us. Since I don’t know the place and even Malayalam I decided to go with my engineering friends who were from Trichur district. His name was Manikandan, a final year engineering student from Nandha College of Engineering. That was the sudden plan to visit Trichur district, we had no time to book the ticket, we went in general compartment of train named Corba express which we took in Erode railway station at morning six O’clock and reached Trichur railway station around twelve O’clock. There we hired an auto for his place and reached his house after an hour. I took bath and slept without taking lunch because I was so tired sitting in general compartment of train for five hours. Evening only I wake up and took food along with tea, then we went for a movie (Malayalam movie) though I don’t know Malayalam but I enjoyed a lot. After coming to his house we took dinner and slept. Next morning after taking bath me and Manikandan started for Guruvayur temple. we both were wearing white colour dhoti and white colour banyan as shirt and pant is not allowed in the temple. After reaching temple we were standing in a queue and waiting for our turn to see ‘Lord Krishna’, almost two hours we were standing there. after that only our turn came. We had a prayer there for sometime, took one round and saw entire temple, lake and temple elephant.
Then we left from there and decided to see elephant in Trichur elephant zoo which is a famous zoo for elephants in kerala. We went to zoo and saw many baby elephants and even big elephants; it was a lunch time there so went for lunch to Rajasthani hotel where we took north Indian lunch as I was north Indian. After seeing some tourist place we reached home and took rest for around two hours. That night itself we were supposed to return from Trichur to Erode, we both took connection bus for Erode because direct bus was not available that night for Erode. Roads of kerala were too bad to travel, buses were too old, like 1960’s. It was not safe to travel in kerala seeing the condition and roads of Kerala. God only knows how Kerala’s people are traveling in third class bus with no guarantee and warranty.
Though Kerala is known as God’s own country, still I saw that Muslims were not allowed to enter inside Guruvayur temple and several other temples in Kerala by Brahmans. One thing which surprised me in Guruvayur temple was everyone came in dhoti and without shirt and banyan. I don’t understand that culture and tradition. being a north Indian that was the first time I went in dhoti and banyan inside temple. I have not seen such thing in my place and other parts of north India.
