Mama, What Are Those?
Born 2001, F, from Nanana, Philippines.jpg)
“Mama, what are those?” Asked Baby Bird in his nest. “Why do they sleep during the day?”
“Those are bats. They are nocturnal. That means they sleep during the day instead of during the night.” Answered Mama Bird.
“It looks fun hanging upside-down like them. I wish I could try that.” Said Baby Bird.
As night came, Baby Bird and Mama Bird settled into their nest and tucked their heads under their wings. They had dozed off before the bats started to wake up.
Baby Bat and Mama Bat looked at them from their branch.
“Mama, what are those?” Asked Baby Bat as she was practicing to fly. “What are they doing?”
“Those are birds. They are sleeping in their nests. They sleep during the night instead of during the day.” Answered Mama Bat
“It looks like fun having a nest. I wish we had a house like that.” Said Baby Bat. "And Mama, why are they so colorful?"
"They are colorful because they are meant to decorate the trees and the fields. That is God's purpose for them." Answered Mama Bat.
Baby Bird woke up to a start. He had heard a loud flapping noise. He had been so excited because the bats were finally awake. He woke up Mama Bird.
“Wow! Look at those bats! They are about five times bigger than us! The baby is as big as you, Mama!” said Baby Bird happily.
He had been waiting a while to see the bats.
“Those bats are called Megabats. They are vegetarians. They are eating fruits. They help pollinate and grow plants. Their great-grandfather probably helped plant this atis tree, where we live!” Said Mama Bird.
Later that night, small bats started to swoop in and out the tree. Baby Bird asked Mama Bird, "Mama, what are those? How can they fly so fast in the dark without hitting anything? Why are they so dark?"
"Those are microbats. They are visiting because it is too cold where they normally live. They use echolocation with their voice and their ears to see at night. They are dark because they have to blend in the cave when they sleep so that they won't get seen and eaten by other animals. I love it when they are here because they eat all those pesky mosquitoes at night. That is God's purpose for them." Mama Bird answered.
From afar, Baby Bat and Mama Bat were watching some birds. Then, Baby Bat asked, "Mama, what are those white round stones that bird is sitting on?"
"Those are eggs. There are baby birds inside them. Whenever the baby birds are ready to come out, the eggs crack and the birds come out."
"Ooh! Cool! Why don't we have eggs?" asked Baby Bat.
"Because we are mammals. Mammals do not lay eggs and have fur. Birds have feathers."
Night came and the birds went off to sleep.
The next day, the birds went out to eat. "I want some yummy gummy, insects and worms, and crunchy seeds!" cried Baby Bird loudly.
"Sshh!" Mama Bird said sternly. "You might wake the bats!"
When Mama Bird said that, baby microbat woke up.
"Mama! Mama! Look! The birds are eating! I thought they just eat seeds, but they eat insects too! Like us!" said the baby microbat.
Then, the microbats were off to hibernate.
The leaves rustled loudly behind Baby Bird and Mama Bird.
Baby Bat was stuck in the branches! Mama Bird went over and tried to help, but then, Mama Bat stopped her.
“I’ll do it.” Said Mama Bat as she tried to bite a few of the branches. It seemed like she could do it, but then, she gave up. Mama Bird tried to think about how they could get Baby Bat out.
Suddenly, Mama Bird started untangling the branches with her beak, just like how she built her nest. Baby Bird watched in amazement. And in no time, Baby Bat was free! She didn’t know how to thank Mama Bird.
Mama Bat and Mama Bird had started a conversation. While they were talking, Baby Bird went to Baby Bat.
“Hello! What happened?” said Baby Bird curiously.
“I'm sorry I was just trying to eat that fruit.” Baby Bat said as she was pointing to an atis near the nest.
“Oh. I’ll help you.” Baby Bird answered as he pecked out a piece of the atis beside him, and gave it to Baby Bat.
Then, the two Mamas looked at each other and smiled.
The bats moved in the birds’ tree and they became the best of friends. And lived happily ever after.
