By Ahmed Habib
Born 1998, M, from Sydney, Australia
View Author Profile

My Name Is Jamal Kareem. I Was Born In The States. I have Five Siblings and All Of them Had A dream to become Basketball Players and they Pursued That Dream.

But I was the only one who had a different dream and it sounded weird, but i wanted to become a Writer. At the Age Of 15 me and my family Moved to Sydney, Australia, Because my Father Found A perfect job over there. I still had the thought of becoming a writer in mind. So I started writing Small Stories every once in a while.

But my Family weren't That Encoaurging Because they Wanted Me to be an Engineer or a Doctor, But I hated that. So I was on my own in this Dream. I did have an uncle who was a writer. But I didn't figure that out until I reached 18. We traveled to The States so that my father could meet his Parents. My uncle was a retired writer so I always used to ask him what do you do for living?

He Would Tell Me Nothing, so I was A bit Curious About That. I Would Ask Him the Same Question Every Day, But I Wasn't Getting An answer so I gave Up. I was Lying On my Bed One Day At midnight and I was Bored. So I Went to the living room and I found a big Closet over there. I remembered my uncle used to tell me to never touch that closet, But I was Curious. I was Asking myself what is it That my Uncle Puts in that Box That he Hides From Everybody. So I Opened it. Inside it I found A big Black Box. When I Opened it I Found A lot Of books with the name Of my Uncle In it.

My Uncle Woke Up and was Passing by the living room and he saw me and said, what you doing Up so late? I Said, I Couldn't Sleep. He said, what's that in your hand? I Said, A book. He said, I Know It's a Book! Where'd you get it from? I said, from the closet. He pointed at the closet and asked me stunningly, That Closet? I said, Yes.

So he went to his room and looked a bit disturbed. So i tried following him and he said, Jamal Go to your Room! I went to my room, and I Was concluding That My Uncle had his names on All these Tremendous Books, I Asked myself, Then How did he have time to write these books when he was already a Doctor in the past? So i slept on it. The Next day we were eating Breakfast together and We were talking about how it's amazing to see all the family gathered in one House.

My Uncle Went to the living room without eating. I was Passing By the Living Room and he looked like he was curious about something. I wanted to ask what's wrong, but i recalled that he's upset from me, but i still asked him, Uncle Abdul What's Wrong? he Ignored Me.

It was Obvious That he Wasn't In A Good mood, so I was Leaving The Living Room and he Said, Wait! I Said Yeah. He Said: Why Did you Open The Black Box? I Said Uncle, I'm really Sorry, but I Didn't know You were an Amazing Writter! He Told me That Was Long Ago, I Quit That!

He Asked me, Which Book Did you Read? I Told Him, All Of Them. then I asked, if You were An Amazing Writer like This, why Didn't you tell Me? He said, for some personal Reasons. I Said Ok. I still Had a Question In my Mind, But I Wasn't ready To Ask Him, But I still did. I asked Him, You did write all these Books Right? He Said Yes. I told Him, they're Amazing. he Said, so What's Your Point? I said, if you were A Doctor or A business man How Did you have time to write All these Books? He Said, I Wasn't a Doctor or A business man. I Was A Writer. I Said: Well That explains everything!

I asked, can you please give me Some Adivise About Writing? he said Listen: "To live a creative life we must first lose the fear of being wrong. ~ Joseph Chilton Pearce." I Said, Wow Thanks A lot. so we Sat Down discussing about writers and Everything. he also told me: "The desire to write grows with writing. ~Desiderius Erasmus" And "If you wait for inspiration to write; you're not a writer, you're a waiter. ~ Dan Poynter"
