And So They Knew Love...
Born 1990, M, from Pune, India“Well this is it I guess”, they hugged, giving a sweet peck at each other before they finally parted for good. Jenna ran her hand once more at his cheeks and told him, “You know, you were the best boy friend I ever had. Whatever you do, take care and be yourself. And I will miss you.” And in seconds she left and out of his sight.
He wanted to part ways, it was he who told her so. But with her sudden disappearance he somehow felt a void that filled his heart. He hadn’t cried in years but that day, as he recalled, a sweet tear did touch down his cheek. And when he realized, she was gone never to come back in his life. Jenna had actually left.
Something had been bothering him; it would not leave him all alone. He wanted to scream and shout it out but he knew he just didn’t have the courage to do so. He wanted to run away and hide but that would just make him a fool. He already had been living a secret life. A secret, yet somehow he truly felt that he belonged there. He recalled, he knew how to smile for no apparent reason, he just simply felt happy.
It was three years back and he hadn’t yet fully recovered from the breakup. Out of impulse he had started dating Jenna and it was a mistake and he regretted having done so.
She knew that he was still hung up with the girl that had dumped him but she had never known what she looked like. She just knew her name, “Angela” and she had imagined of her to possess the looks of an angel. She, in her own way, had always tried to give the best. She knew she would one day win his heart over the charms of that girl that dumped him; she kept trying for she had deeply fallen in love with him. She loved him.
He was yet trying and fighting with his consciousness. He knew he had to let go of the past and be with her but he simply wouldn’t want to understand that. He somehow felt that the memories he had of the past, the time he had spent, was ethereal and he somehow was trying to recreate the magic he had of Angela, with Jenna. Illusioned by the long lost happiness that he desperately was searching for he tried creating the same magic and the jinx with her and when it didn’t work out, he felt frustrated and betrayed.
“Why will it not feel the same? I was in love and I am in love right now.”
Then they started fighting often. He just would not pick up her call. There were always excuses not to meet her up. He ignored her.
She knew he was ignoring her, but her heart said he would come back. She was in love with him. She had to give it a try and it was the chance that she kept giving him. Someday she would feel scared at the thought of losing him for the rest of her life and she would cry. But the very next morning she would call him up, without a cough in her voice of having cried all night, and would remind him that she was still in love with him.
He messaged Angela one day, “Why would you leave me in the middle of the road? I am like a flustered statue. The shine in my smile that I wear is the mask that I had been wearing since the day you left me. You ripped off the very soul. We were supposed to be together. What happened to all those vows and promises?”
He hadn’t wanted to hear back from her but when he didn’t hear from her, it frustrated him even more. He would choke to the reality that she was ignoring him or harsher, she had forgotten him. Then it dawned on him, he finally realized what he had been doing and whom he had been playing with.
He knew what he had to do. He picked up the phone and rang her up.
“Jenna, I want to meet you.”
They met at his apartment, talked silently and sorrowfully. And when it was all done, she kissed him at his cheeks “You were the best boy friend I ever had. Whatever you do, take care and be yourself. And I will miss you.” And in seconds she left him for the rest of her life.
Fifteen years later Jenna diary’s read…
It was a rush day and I almost forgot to collect Amy’s medical report from the Pediatrician. It was there that I saw him, I almost felt like the world was moving except me. The tiny hand of her little daughter grabbed his finger. It was the radiating smile that I had always wanted to see from him. He indeed looked happy after all these many years. God! It’s been years since I met him last.
And it was then, I saw her. I had never seen her but had always heard of her name many a times and yes she is true to her name. She indeed looked angelic. Thank god he got her back. They truly look happy together.

His diary wrote…
The handwriting looked very familiar, of someone I knew but I wasn’t exactly able to recall. It was then the name of the child that froze my world for a moment, “Amy”, I would call her when I have a daughter. Moments later I saw her after fifteen long years. She looked taller and the pale face she had long back was gone. Maybe she had found her shining armored prince. She looked even more beautiful with that sari, so she must have finally learned to wear one.
I had wanted to tell her that I never got married. I never found a one. Angela and I have reconciled but as a friend. She is widowed with a daughter, and I have decided to support them financially and her daughter needed someone as a father to take care. She indeed has become a gem in my life. I had wanted to tell her that it was never her fault when we used to fight. I was just lost and couldn’t see clearly.
I wanted to let her go as I was hurting her, I was still in love with Angela back then and I had known how it felt to have an unrequited love. I just didn’t want to hurt her for I cared, I truly cared. But I wanted to go back to Angela and I shouldn’t have caged her. I wanted to tell her that I knew how much she had loved me back then, and that it hurt me more for I just wasn’t able to give her back all that she so expressed untold. I wanted to tell her that I just wanted to see her happy and that she would not find happiness with me, she deserved better.
May be she knew that I had wanted good for her in her life.
She still didn’t see me though I had wanted to talk. I didn’t have the courage yet. She walked away and it was the smile in her face that relieved me. She finally found someone who truly loved her. I am happy for them. He is a very lucky guy to have found her.
