A New Friend
Born 1983, M, from Atlanta,Texas, United StatesIt was the first day of school at Green Oaks High. Chelsea Redden was putting a book in her locker. She was a sophomore and a transfer student from another school. She did not talk to anyone because of something that happened a couple of years ago.
Chelsea was closing her locker when Miranda Boyd walked up. Miranda was a fun loving person and was excited to see her friends that she had not seen since school had let out for the Summer. Miranda had never met Chelsea before and was hoping to accomplish two things: make a new student feel welcome and make a new friend. “Hi, I am Miranda,” said Miranda sticking her hand out for Chelsea to shake. Chelsea shook her hand. “I am Chelsea but I like have to get to class,” said Chelsea who walked off after shaking Miranda’s hand.
Miranda opened her locker and started putting a book in her locker. Mackenzie Cheyanna Bates walked up and started opening her locker. She saw Miranda trying to introduce herself and start a conversation with Chelsea. “K, so like don’t worry about her. She is like probably from a rich family and is like too good to talk to you,” said Mackenzie. Miranda had a discouraged look on her face because she really wanted to make Chelsea feel welcome. “K. So you are like probably right,” said Miranda with a sigh. “K So like don’t feel bad. You tried and there is like going to be a bunch of new snooty nose peeps this school year,” said Mackenzie putting her arm around Miranda.
Holli Deanna Redden was cooking supper while her husband Daniel was reading the newspaper. Chelsea opened the front door that lead to the kitchen. “How was school?” asked Holli. “Fine,” said Chelsea without another word as she went to her room. “I hate to see her like that,” said Holli. Daniel stood up and put his arm around Holli. “Don’t worry, honey, pretty soon Chelsea is going to make some new friends and you won’t be able to shut her up,” said Daniel. “I hope you are right,” said Holli with a sigh.
Emily Jennings, a classmate and friend of Miranda and Mackenzie, sat down beside Chelsea in the school cafeteria. Chelsea was expecting Emily to try and make small talk. Several students had tried to talk to Chelsea but she would not talk to them. Chelsea was surprised that all Emily did was eat her lunch and did not try to talk to her. Chelsea began to wonder if the other students were using silent treatment to try to get her to talk.
Chelsea thought about what happened in the cafeteria the rest of the afternoon. In the back of her mind she was thinking that the students were trying to force her to talk by having someone give her the silent treatment. Just the thought of someone forcing her to talk made her angry. She decided she would confront Emily.
Emily was waiting on the bus to take her home. “K. So, what you are attempting to do is not going to work!” said Chelsea angrily. Emily had a surprised look on her face because she did not know what Chelsea was talking about. “K. So what are you talking about?” asked Emily. “You like totally know what I am talking about. You are like giving me the silent treatment because you like want me to talk so you can go tell your pathetic friends what we like talked about,” said Chelsea bitterly. Emily was still confused about what she was talking about. “K. So I don’t know what you are like talking about,” said Emily. “When we were in the cafeteria, you like did not try and talk to me like the others,” said Chelsea. “K. Did you like ever stop and think it was because I did not know you and I like have to get to know you before I will talk to you because there are peeps who will go out and tell everything you said,” said Emily. Chelsea thought about what happened to her a couple of years ago and tears started running down her cheek. “Oh-mi-gosh. I feel like a total fool,” said Chelsea. Emily hugged her. “It’s kk. If you ever decide to talk about it, I will be here to listen and it will be like our secret. Pinky swear” said Emily sticking out her pinky finger. Chelsea stood there for a moment feeling foolish and embarrassed, about her actions. Then she stuck her pinky finger out and wrapped it around Emily’s. “Pinky swear,” said Chelsea. On the way home from school Emily and Chelsea talked on the bus.
Holli was cooking supper when Chelsea came home from school. She had given up on asking Chelsea how her day at school was because Chelsea would just say fine and go to her room. “K so aren’t you like going to ask me how school was?” asked Chelsea excitedly sitting her backpack back on the floor. “I did not see any need to because all you would say is it was fine,” said Holli. “It was like totally awesome today,” said Chelsea sitting down at the kitchen table and telling Holli about Emily.
