He Conquers Death
Born 1986, F, from Kolkata, IndiaHe Conquers Death
(Mrityunjay*)
Rains … flowing in torrents from the sky above… as if a lunatic demon is dancing its Nataraj pose. Inside the laboratory room, Dr. Sen and his assistant Naina and Sunil are engaged in research work. They are devoted in their commitment. They will invent medicine for curing cancer – a firm determination writ large on their faces.
We wont accept to be beaten. We’ll kill the disease- we shall do it- the words were uttered slowly but they reflected a pledge which inspired Naina and Sunil.
A story behind the story is there. A trip down his memory lane.
Who was this Dr.Sen? He was born in a remote village, an obscure place. He lost his father in his infancy only at the age of six months. Since then he lived with his mother in a ramshackle cottage. One day his mother fell ill and the village quack showed sign of deperate helplessness in saving her. The furniture of the house was all sold. The very house itself was on sale and his most favourite thing in the house, his mouth organ. He came to the city all pauper to stay there forever. Much trouble and trauma he had to face and after all the frantic efforts a good doctor of the town was consulted who after diagnosis told that his mother had developed cancer.
The hectic running helter and skelter for money! O the hardship. The operation would have to be done. But all done and arranged, the last blow came from Fate. Death's summon was unavoidable and the tie between the mother and the little Dipta was severed at last. Only five minutes before she was taken to the ICCU, the mother breathed her last painful breath. All gone in vain. But that very day Dr.Sen promised that in future he would not leave any mother at the mercy of unkind Death. The transformation occurred and all was due to his mental strength, commitment to his mission, and firm determination. The little Dipta of the village became Dr. Sen of the city. Those days passed so swiftly… Dr.Sen was chewing the cud of memory.
Dr.Sen was doing research with all his seriousness. But his mind was filled with an unforeseen joy. Seventy two long hours he had been working with his experiment. He was so close to the invention of the antidote to cancer which killed millions of its victims. How many years? Not less than fifty years. The research for five long decades is crowned with success- his hope, determination, dream, all going to be realized. The experiment is going to be successful at last...
Alisha was nearly dead. She was a victim of the cancer disease. It made Alisha nearly dead and lying on the bench. Dr. Sen was to administer the dose of medicine to the diseased dog and filled his syringe. For the last three years the dog was almost an inert object, a lifeless clot. But after the dose of medicine being given, the dog which was lying in a stupor, sprang like a tiger after a few minutes. A smile of satisfaction lingered on the face of Dr. Sen. It was an indescribable joy and no word was enough for the expression of joy. Dr.Sen became speechless. Naina and Sunil just got wonderstruck and glared at Dr. Sen’s eyes. Then happened the most tragic incident of the world just after ten minutes. Suddenly Dr. Sen himself sat down on the stool with his hands posited on his head. He was bleeding from nose and mouth. What happened? Dr.Sen felt an awful headache since a couple of years but he didn’t find time for his overmuch preoccupation with experiments. After the scanning, brain cancer was detected. Dr.Sen too was a victim of the killer disease!
Ten years he lived with this fatal disease. He had been struggling against death to bring millions to life. Millions of patients would now be benefitted. Dr.Sen’s invention of the panacea will take them out of the dark cell of death to the bright world of life. The terrible labour that he gave was a too heavy strain for his frail body to bear.
It was a picture of death. Gradually he lost his ability to speak. At last the moment came when the bright light of his life was extinguished. In wonder, pain and suspense Naina and Sunil became speechless. They collapsed in tears. The deep dark night was resonant with their weeping, and tears rolled down their cheeks. But on the face of the dead Dr.Sen there was the effervescent smile. The smile of success.
