Hate Him Love Him
Born 1997, F, from Banyumas, IndonesiaHelen almost couldn’t believe the scenery she saw with her own eyes. She saw Joe, who was sitting far from her, with a girl. They were so close. And, it was normal, because they were dating.
Helen then passed that scenery. She chose to walk, left the scenery behind. She was too sick to see Joe and that girl dating. She couldn’t believe a boy who she admired so much did such a sad thing. Joe, who was opening Helen’s mind for the first time widely about God, love, and life, who was always asking her to be diligent in order to devote herself to God, did the wrong thing in front of her eyes. She was so disappointed, upset, and mad at him, and herself.
Helen just passed him a few meters away when she heard someone call out her name.
“Helen! Come here!”
Helen lifted her face up, looking for who is calling. Then she saw a group of girls were standing upstairs, right above her. They were Helen’s old classmates when they were in tenth grade. Helen smiled.
“Hi,” Helen called after she reached them. “What’s the matter?”
“Come closer, Helen dear,” one of them, Ann, said.
Helen walked toward them.
“What’s the matter, guys?” Helen asked again.
“We will ask you something,” the tall and fat one, Charlotte, said. “But, please, don’t be angry to us... and please be honest.”
Helen frowned for a while. “Alright,” finally she said, nodded her head.
“Ok, this is the question,” said Charlotte. “Do you like Joe?”
Helen froze for a moment.
“Wait,” she said, unsure. “What do you ask this for?”
“Just answer our question, Helen,” said the tall and thin, Fizz.
Helen felt a bit of indecision. She was afraid to say the truth — she liked Joe. The thing that made her afraid was what if the girls all hated her.
“Be honest, Helen,” said Charlotte. “We won’t hurt you, whatever your answer.”
“Well then,” Helen took a long sigh, smiled heavily. “Yeah, I like him.”
Almost all of the group members were gasping. And Helen felt uneasy with their reaction.
“Am I wrong, guys?” Helen asked in worry.
“No, Helen. You aren’t wrong at all,” said Ann. “We just... hhahah! We're just surprised to hear your answer. It was surprising us, right?”
“You’re right, Ann,” said Fizz. “We think you won’t fall for him... but, actually, you’re just the same with us.”
“It means that I’m normal,” Helen replied. And all of them were laughing.
“Umm~ may I ask you something?” asked Helen.
“Well, what’s that?” asked Charlotte.
“About the conflict between all of you and Joe,” said Helen softly. “Actually, what’s going on between all of you? Seems there’s something bad happened~”
“Oh, about that,” Charlotte spoke in a heavy tone. “About Joe, we don’t know who’s right and who’s wrong between us. We just... ah, should I tell you from the beginning? Martha, help me...”
“Oh!” Martha, the glasses, shouted. “What?”
“Help me to tell the story...” asked Charlotte.
“Well,” Martha said pleasurably, pushed her body to see Helen.
“Firstly,” Martha began to tell the story. “Firstly you know the circumstance among us, Helen. We were okay. We like Joe together, we had told him, and promised to not get angry if then one of us would be Joe’s girlfriend. You know it, don’t you, Helen?”
“Yes,” said Helen, full of attention.
“Then, it changed when finally Joe took one of us, Sharon, to be his girlfriend. At first, we were fine. We still made friends with her. But, as the time went by, Sharon slowly began to leave and forgot us. She was busier with Joe and never talked to us. We had tried to keep the communication among us, but Sharon always is untouched. She always ignored us. That’s why we were disappointed of her till now.”
Helen nodded her head. She understood then. But, she realized, Martha didn’t talk about Joe yet.
“What about Joe, Martha? Do all of you disappoint of him too?”
“Yes, we do,” said Martha tragically.
The answer was shocking Helen’s mind. She was curious. “Why?”
“Because he has changed 180 degrees than before he dated with Sharon,” answered Charlotte.
“What are the changes you see from Joe? Let me know...” Helen asked.
“So many changes have occurred to him,” Ann spoke sadly. “First, we know him as a diligent, active, humble, extrovert and religious boy. But then, now we see, Joe isn’t like that anymore. He now is quiet, more introverted, and I see he is less diligent in devoting himself to God. Those are the changes I see and what I know~”
Helen took a long sigh, felt pity on what she had heard. “I see...”
“What about you, Helen?” Fizz asked.
“Me?” Helen got steady. “Yeah, approximately I felt like the way you felt toward them. Wish he will back to his better past... I miss the past he...”
“Me too,” replied Charlotte. “Or, maybe, we must do something...”
The atmosphere was quiet for a while. Suddenly, a bright shine came out of Jane’s eyes. She was the small and short and quiet one among them.
“I've got an idea...” suddenly Jane shouted.
Everybody took a look at Jane.
“But, maybe... uhm~ Helen, would you like to go away? Please?”
Again, Helen frowned. But, she just obeyed Jane’s request then. She walked away with a big curiosity in her mind. She thought and thought, what were they planning?
Time went by, and Helen went to school as usual. She was forgetting about Joe and Sharon and everything about them. She decided to live her life as usual, with joy and a smile. She didn’t care about Joe anymore. She more focused on her own side of life then.
It was time to go back home when Helen got a message through her cell phone. She just went out when she felt the vibration came from her phone.
“Come to the Sociology room now. We have to do something. Fizz.”
“Huh?” Helen frowned. “What had happened again?”
Though she was unsure with the originality of the message, Helen walked to the room anyway. And, when she arrived there, she was a bit shocked.
A bad scene came into Helen’s eyes. She saw Sharon sobbing, and leaning toward the wall. Joe was standing in front of the door. And Martha and the gang were standing facing them, a few centimeters away from Joe and Sharon. She saw Joe’s expression, felt so uneasy and guilty. She couldn’t understand the scene she saw.
“I... I’m coming, guys?” Helen broke the silence. “What’s happening here?”
All the students were looking at her. Their eyes were moist.
“Oh, Helen, finally you come,” Fizz welcomed her, walked toward her, hugged her, and sobbed. “Say something to them, Helen! Anything! We were exhausted! Say something...”
“Fizz,” Helen dazed, confused. “Actually what’s going on here? Tell me, please.”
“Helen,” it was Martha’s turn to speak. “We tried to tell them the error of their way, but they couldn’t believe us! Help us, Helen! Speak up your mind...”
“What?” Helen widened her eyes. “But... What can I say?”
“Helen,” suddenly Joe called.
Helen gasped, shocked. She was nervous of being called by Joe. She looked at Joe, who was standing desperately in front of the room door.
“Yes?” Helen replied softly, holding her breath.
Joe approached her and looked at her with moist eyes. “Speak the truth. Do you like me?”
“What?” Helen exclaimed. She was shocked to hear Joe’s question. She never thought Joe would ask this kind of question.
“Answer me, Helen,” said Joe, forcing her.
“What do you mean?” Helen asked. She didn’t know what to answer instead. “What’s your purpose, Joe?”
“Just answer my question, Helen...” Joe forced Helen then.
Helen’s mouth was locked. She couldn’t speak. She didn’t know what to speak and how to answer. She couldn’t speak the truth; otherwise she would hurt anybody’s heart. She felt she had to leave.
“I’m sorry, I must go,” said Helen, and turned around to leave. But, immediately Joe held her hand. Helen couldn’t move.
“Please, Helen...” Joe begged in frustration. “Please, speak the truth, Helen. Don’t be afraid. We won’t be angry to you.”
“Yes, Helen. Please...” the gang echoed Joe’s wish.
Helen quietly held her sob. She didn’t want to let anybody hear her sobbing.
“So, I must tell everything, now?” Helen asked with a heavy tone. She didn’t turn back, nor release Joe’s hand. She tried so hard to hold her sob.
“Yes, tell us,” said Joe.
Helen took a long sigh. She closed her eyes, thought what she would say firstly to Joe.
“Well then,” Helen finally began to speak. “I’ll tell you the truth. Yep, honestly, I like you.”
Everybody was quiet to hear Helen’s words. All of them were waiting for Helen’s next sentences, especially Joe.
Still facing away from Joe’s face, Helen continued speaking. “I've liked you since we were in tenth grade. I like your smile, your words no matter how chilly they are, your laugh, and your wise mind. You’re religious too. You’re awesome because of that. It’s normal if so many girls like you. I don’t doubt it.”
Joe caught his breath after hearing Helen’s statement. “Then, why didn’t you tell me?”
“How could I tell you if plenty of girls were around you?” Helen said in a high tone. “I saw they were more beautiful, more smart, and more everything than me. I felt defeated from them. And, because of that circumstance, you seemed so far away. I’ve tried to reach you so many ways, but I was always failed.”
“So, because of that, you didn’t reveal your feelings?” Joe asked. “How could you do that? You must be sick for long time...”
“You’re right, Joe,” Helen replied. “But, after I thought about how strong your religion is, I chose to hide everything from you and show to you that everything is okay. Then, I remember, the time when you talked about God, love, and life. I remember how pure you are when you were talking about that. Since that, I realized that I was so much wrong in front of God’s eyes. You were opening my eyes, and showing me everything. I realized I had so much sin from the past and how empty my life was because I didn’t remember Him. And since that, I went back to my God and I thanked you so much.”
“My God...” Joe moaned.
“And, one thing again...” Helen added. Tears were falling down to her lips. “I have something to say. I hope it won’t hurt your feelings.”
“Sure, it won’t,” Joe said, holding Helen’s hand tighter. “Speak it anyway.”
“Well, honestly,” Helen tried her best to hold her pain in her heart. “I admire you because you are a pure person as what I see. You’re strong minded, confident, and have a strong religion. But, after I know you are dating and you had become so bad, I was totally disappointed of you, Joe...”
“Huh?” Joe sighed. He couldn’t think how she could say that about his relationship. He thought that Helen seemed to not let him date with another girl instead of herself.
“You don’t agree with my relationship, do you?” Joe asked, felt insulted. He was in anger. “You’re just the same with Martha and her gang, Helen! You don’t set me free.”
Helen’s eyes widened. She felt a misunderstanding occurred to her lovely friend, Joe. And, as Joe was about to release her hand, she quickly turned around facing Joe.
“No, Joe! It’s not like that!” Helen exclaimed. Tears were running down from her eyes.
Joe was shocked to see Helen’s expression. Warmness came into his heart.
“Oh Helen,” he moaned. “Are you crying?”
“Please don’t hate me, Joe,” Helen spoke. She couldn’t hold her tears any longer. “Please, don’t misunderstand. The thing which makes me feel disappointed of you is not your relationship with Sharon. It is not it!”
“Then, what’s that?” Joe asked, feeling pain in his heart.
“It’s the trouble you make after you are dating with Sharon,” Helen said with a sob. “I don’t mind if you’re dating with someone else, not except Sharon. But, I just hope one thing...”
Joe’s heart became warmer after seeing Helen’s expression which is full of hope and sincere. “What do you hope?”
“I... I hope...” Helen said softly with so much hopeful in her heart. “I hope... I wish, though you are dating with a girl, I wish you still keep your goodness. Remember your God as your number one priority, make your parents proud of you, and don’t lose others’ trust for you. Show them you’re trustful and you’re a hard worker. Don’t hurt Sharon’s feeling, and don’t forget your friends.”
“Oh Helen,” Joe felt touched. Warm atmosphere lingered around his mind. Unconsciously, a shed of tears was running down from his left eye. He never thought Helen would be so sincere like that, wishing the best for him.
Helen then walked, approached Sharon who was still staying on her place, sobbing.
“I warn you, Sharon,” Helen said, wiping the tears from Sharon’s eyes. “Though you already have a special friend, you mustn’t forget your best friends. Keep in touch with them, don’t make them worry or don’t make them misunderstand your condition. And, keep Joe’s feeling, okay? I give him to you.”
“And you, guys,” Helen turned around, faced Martha’s gang. She smiled gratefully at them. “I thank you for this plan. Especially for you, Jane! If you didn’t call me and plan this wonderful event, I don’t know what I will be tomorrow and the next days. You’re great, guys!”
“Oh Helen,” Martha and the others exclaimed, and then cried.
Helen turned around to look at Joe. He was standing, looking at her with an admiring smile on his lips toward her.
“You’re the great one, Helen,” Joe said softly, approaching her, and hugged her tightly with so much gratitude.
Helen was excited of being hugged by her crush. She was frozen for a while. But, realizing that there were plenty of girls around her and Joe, she pushed Joe off. But, she was failed. Joe’s hug was so tight.
“Let me go, stupid old grandpa!” Helen shouted.
But, Joe didn’t care. He kept hugging her, and then whispered to her ears, “Thank you for your wish! Actually, I like you, too~”
Once again Helen was frozen. She didn’t know what to do then.
