Ken was an average school kid, his grades were average (even a little below), he lived in a suburb of Mantown, but he had a great mother and she loved him a lot. She would take out time from her busy schedule as a baker to teach Ken and play with him.

But most of all ken really missed his dad, his dad had been a major in the army until the Syrian operation……. After that dad was gone… forever.
Nevertheless his mom made up for dad. Had it not been for her, ken would have been a lachrymose loser, not a voracious reader who was even consulted by the teachers on which book to read. But still he didn’t have any friends.

He didn’t like school especially because of Jay, Jay Royal, the biggest bully in his year. Jay used to call ken Jetsam. At first ken had found it cool, but on consulting the dictionary he realized it meant unwanted luggage thrown off a jet. Yet Ken didn’t care, he’d find a true friend sooner or later.

Exams approached and Ken started working very hard, especially for the first examination- mathematics. Ken’s preparation was amazing, he practiced each sum twice and learnt the formulae by heart. He waited for the exam with crossed fingers, he’d prepared so hard.

Today was the exam day, finally. His mother wished him luck and he set out, it was a hot day and he felt drowsy as he walked to school. He saw a tall gentleman in front of him who seemed sort of familiar; he appeared to be waiting for somebody, maybe a cab.

He wasn’t a very patient guy Ken noticed, because after waiting for a few minutes he started walking ahead in long strides, but he hadn’t even walked a few meters when something strange happened, the man fainted.
Ken rushed towards him. All the color had drained out of his face. Ken dragged him towards the nearest shelter and splashed some drops of water on his face. Next he dialed an ambulance from a public telephone. It took a lot of time, going to the hospital with the man, helping in calling some contacts to inform them of the sad event.

One of the nurses dropped ken at school, but it was of no use, the exam time limit was over.

The principal had been informed about his good deed but the damage was done, he had missed the most important paper. He went home and cried to his mother but mother smiled and said that father would be proud of him, for he had saved someone’s life and made the right and ethical choice.
The next day mom took him to a function at the huge Town hall. On looking around he saw boards saying ‘our hero Kenneth Baton’.

Apparently the man he had saved was a rich businessman and had funded this function in his honor, but more surprising was that Jay royal was present here and as soon as Jay saw him coming he hugged Ken and said, “I was wrong, you are not jetsam, you are god. You saved my daddy’s life, you are a hero” and without warning he burst into tears. And he kept on weeping and moaning. The principal too was present here and he whispered in Ken's ear that he should enjoy the occasion, but no need to worry about the exam, he would have a retest.

Everybody cheered for Ken and at the end of the day Jay came and talked to him. Soon they became best friends…..true friends.
