A Different Kind of Love
Born 1997, F, from SouthBend, Indiana, United States“Kayleigh open the door!” I heard Brendan scream pounding loudly on my front door. I kept ignoring him hoping that he would get a hint and go away. But just my luck my boyfriend was oblivious to everything. He wouldn’t even know death if it were staring him right in the face. Although he was a complete and total dork I loved him. Someone had to.
“Kayleigh, I know you’re in there just open the damn door.” He said continuing to pound on the door. I sighed and finally inched closer to the door. I had to let him in or the neighbors would call the police again. I am sure that they have had enough of Brendan’s and me constant arguing.
I opened the door and stood in front of the doorway. “What do you want Brendan?” I asked already knowing his answer. He would say that he was sorry and that he loved me and beg for forgiveness. That’s how things usually happened. The next day things would be fine again. Our relationship was like a never-ending rollercoaster full of unexpected twists and turns. To be honest I hadn’t expected this to be one of those relationships where things would return to normal out of bad habit.
“Can you let me in so we can talk about this please?” He begged pleading with his eyes. I shook my head giving up and moving away from the door. I walked towards the couch and sighed in defeat. This battle was over and he had won once again. “What is there to talk about?” I asked turning to him as he was closing the door. Brendan walked over and sat on the arm of the couch facing me. “Babe, I’m sorry.” He said apologizing again. “What exactly are you sorry for this time? The cheating or the lying?” I asked trying not to let the sound of defeat show in my voice. I had given up arguing with Brendan a long time ago. There was no point to it. No matter how hard I tried, he would always weasel his way back into my heart. He was a manipulator and for some odd reason I loved it.
“For everything.” He said letting his head hang low. “Right. Here we go again.” I said rolling my eyes in reply. “No. I promise this time will be different.” He said as he tucked a stray piece of hair behind my ear. My body shook when he touched me. This time I let my head hang low.
“Look. How can I prove to you that I can change?” Brendan said sitting next to me. I shook my head not looking up. This was not how it was supposed to be. I didn’t want our relationship to be this way. I wanted the perfect fairytale ending with the prince and the happy ever after. I got my prince, he was a little dysfunctional but he was still mine and I had to deal with it one way or another. “I’ll believe it when I see it.” I sighed looking for a new focus spot. He shook his head and stared at me with his dull with sadness eyes.
“Don’t look at me like that.” I said rolling my eyes once again. That look that look in his eyes was a look of pure sadness. He was legit, he was sincere. Now, I felt bad. The look in his eyes was bearing into my soul. “Fine, I give up, I give in. You win.” I said laying my head on his shoulder. A smile came across his face. “What are you smiling about?” I asked staring up at him through my eyelashes. “You love me.” He said in a singsong voice. “Yeah. I guess I do.” I said in reply closing my eyes. It seemed like no matter how much we fought he would always have that special place in my heart.
“Hey.” Brendan said in my ear. I looked up at him sleepily. “Are you tired?” He asked. “Yeah a little.” “Go to bed.” He said nudging me in the side. I shook my head. “I’m too tired to move. I’m going to sleep right here on the couch.”
“Kayleigh, There is something I have to tell you.” I heard him say as my eyes closed. A couple hours later, I woke up and saw a note on the coffee table. It was from Brendan. It read:
Kayleigh, I never wanted to hurt you but I did you wrong and I wont be able to live with myself. You agreed to give me another chance but I wont accept it. It’s time to move on, for both of us.
Love, Brendan.
And that was the end of the beginning.
