Longing Night
Born 1997, F, from Banyumas, Indonesia.jpg)
It was Saturday night when I woke up at midnight suddenly. I didn’t know what made me awake. I just felt that suddenly my eyes were wanting to be opened. As there was something left undone, I got up and sat on the edge of my bed.
I looked at my desk where I put my things such as books, notebook PC, and magazines and my schoolbag. I recalled whether there was a homework or assignment left or not for tomorrow. But, no. I didn’t find anything left.
I laid my body back onto the bed and faced the ceilings. I didn’t turn on the lamp. And I just remembered that tomorrow was Sunday. So, I didn’t need to be worry about tomorrow’s task. But, still, I couldn’t find the reason why I felt so uneasy like this. I felt there was worry surrounding my mind. It made me feel hard to shut my eyes!
Therefore I got up and walked toward the window instead of continuing trying to close my eyes and then fall asleep. I spread out the curtain. The dark blue night sky was covering above there. Stars were sparkling brightly like diamonds. It was the clearest night sky I had ever seen. So wonderful!
The diamonds and the warm night sky brought my heart into a romantic atmosphere. They gave me wings to fly into my yearning, longing mind. I floated in the air while I stared at my mind’s floor. And then I knew, I got the reason why I couldn’t sleep.
It was his face which was coloring the empty room of my heart. He was the star of my heart, the star of my life, the star of my world. I could see him smiling. I could see him standing near me. I could hear him calling and speaking. But, I didn’t know why — maybe I knew the reason, but it was unexplainable — I couldn’t touch him.
I looked up against the sky. My heart warmed up when suddenly the empty, large, dark blue night sky was filled by a large painting of his face. It was shining brightly, enlightened by stars. So clear. Might be I drew his face with my yearning heart of him. I smiled at it. And I could see it smiling back at me.
Wind became colder. I hugged my body tightly in my arms to warm myself up. Such a silent, holy, and wonderful night time as I had ever had. The path beside my house which could be seen from my room window was filled with silence, loneliness, and was enlightened by a white road lamp with thin green branches of steel. My memory flew backward, recalling the time when it was raining in the evening at a bus stop across my school gate.
I stood together with him. We were waiting for a bus to take us home. Coincidentally we used the same bus everyday to go to school or back home. It was 4 at evening. Heavy rain turned into a heavy drizzle. So much water fell from the sky. We wore our class sport uniform, because no lesson for today and there was a sport event in our school—which we called by class meeting time.
I was chilled on my place. My teeth were grumbling and my body was trembling as a vibrate phone. I almost couldn’t bear with the cold atmosphere. The sky was cloudy, dark as night. There was almost no sunlight. And the drizzle became heavier than before. Wind blew colder, hit my bones. I cursed myself, why had I left my jacket at home.
“Do you feel chill?” suddenly he asked me, broke the silence between us.
I looked at him. He stood a few steps away beside me. He was totally wet from his shoes up to his hair. It was undeniable he must feel more chill than me. I wasn’t as wet as him. But, he smiled at me as if nothing happened. He smiled as if the rain wasn’t bothering him at all.
I felt a bit of butterflies, I smiled back at him.
“Y... yess...” I answered with trembilng voice.
He frowned. “Then, where is your jacket?”
“I.... I llllefffft itt.... att hoooome....” I answered, still in trembling voice.
Without words he placed his bag in front of his chest, pulled out its seal, and picked something out. It was a thick brown jacket.
“Take it,” he said, as he lent the jacket to me. “Cover your body with it. You won’t feel any chill.”
I looked at the jacket in surprise. I never thought that he would lend the jacket to me. I didn’t even think that he would let me to wear his jacket. I knew he needs the jacket more than me. But, how could he lend the jacket to me while he was more wet than me? So many questions were lingering around my head.
“Oh, thank you,” I said after I thought I couldn’t borrow the jacket, still with trembling voice. “But yyyooouu.... Yyyou need it mmmooorrrre thann mmme... You’re mmorre wet than mme. Usse it yoursselff!”
“I’m okay with this situation,” he said, still lending the jacket to me with a sweet smile.
“But, it’s yours,” I said uneasy.
“Ah, don’t be uneasy, Dude!” he said, and then chuckled. He approached me after he placed his bag behind his back again. “Give me your bag!”
“What?” I quested, couldn’t understand with his behavior.
But, without my permission he suddenly pulled out my bag then put it aside. He put my hands inside his jacket. I looked at him with an unbelievable sight while he was busy covering my body with the jacket. Even he pulled the seal himself.
“Your bag,” he said while he put my bag on my back. He then stood in front of me, smiled sweetly. I almost couldn’t breath when I looked at his smile. So awful!
“Nah,” he clapped his hands. “Done! You look okay now. Wear it to warm yourself up and give it back to me after you have done with it. Understand?”
I couldn’t hold my lips to form a smile, a bright smile. My heart was melting down. He was right. My body heat was crawling up after I wore his jacket. And under the rain, he successfully stole my heart together with his sweet and warm smile also with his charming attitude.
The jacket was already returned to the owner. I smiled when I remembered the time I gave the jacket back to him. He was just smiling, looking at me with a warm, friendly sight. I hugged my body tighter. Suddenly, a warm air wrapped my body and deep inside my heart. It might be coming from his warm smile which I had recalled. I sent him a good night kiss through the air.
I pulled the curtain, closed the window, then walked toward my bed. I laid my body down, covered my self with a blanket and prepared to sleep. Once again I painted his face over the ceiling, supposed his warm smile and gaze at me. And successfully he took me up into a beautiful dream, where we were dancing joyfully together under the rain.
