HIGH SCHOOL BULLIES
Born 1981, M, from KAMPALA, UgandaThey can insult your dressing, demean your home town, abuse ones height and weight and can bow so low as to insult ones Mom or Dad. However, behind the obvious brute, bullies are a bunch of paranoid, rebellious individuals, normally suffering from severe inferiority complexes. They often express themselves by inflicting pain either physically or psychologically on others. They are bullish assertive cowards that prey on the most vulnerable.
Teachers and parents often make the mistake of under estimating bullies actions. They brush them off as petty naughtiness. They at times never realize, the victims have been psychologically and physically wounded with internal scars that may last a lifetime.
I joined secondary with the normal excitement, chain of dreams, naivety of youth and expectations. I hoped to make new friends, meet good teachers and find classy buildings. The school really met most of my expectations except for the bullies. Apart from turning all new comers into washing machines, bed makers, and cigarette buyers, they did other things I would not dare mention, lest a bully reads this story, and inflicts the same on another victim.
These bullies are experts in preventing smooth social integration. They meddle in their victims mind, living them either emotionally battered or turning them ultimately into faithful disciples. Guardians have to detect early signs of emotional break down. I know of friends who have become drunkards, smokers, and even bullies themselves. They lacked friends, couldn’t trust teachers, and parents misunderstood them. They simply lacked someone who they could confide in.
Early enough, I realized it was rather stupid trying to impress these individuals. I couldn’t counter them with physical strength, but, what I lacked in strength, I had in wisdom. I developed an ‘RRR’ formula where I relax, read, and run. I relaxed and was never scared of staying in the dormitory with the bullies. However, I would much of the time occupy my self by trying to read and write, rather than trying to get embroiled in their skirmishes. They got so used to my presence that they hardly noticed my presence. Pupils need to learn that bullies are most likely to pounce on those that seem idle.
I learnt that it was important to join at least one constructive club on campus. I joined the Red Cross society and the interact club. This gave me extra friends, occupied me in my free time and as well created the much needed sense of belonging.
Most significantly, it’s important to discover ones special abilities. Each individual is a cupboard of unique quality, virtue or talent. However the magic spark that ignites the path to self discovery doesn’t lie in self pity. Instead of unconsciously hiding behind concealed pain, vaguely admiring other people’s achievement, improve your special gift. One can be a good song writer, soccer player, swimmer, or any other special gift. I discovered I was a good runner and purposed to become an excellent one. I trained so hard and at times on bare foot. On our school sports day, I won the 10000meter race {the equivalent of 10 km}, and the 5000meter race. In the race was one of the bullies, being cheered on by those like him. He had dominated these events and was so confident of victory. He began running in the fourth lane while we the lesser individuals ran in the first. I defeated him, overlapped him, and won the race. He was behind me by not less than two minutes. Credit to him, he congratulated me and confessed I was too good. I became the talk of school, receiving special recognition in front of students and staff on the next school assembly. I began moving with swag only comparable to that of a super ball winner. I wasn’t head and shoulders above the bullies, I was a class apart.
At the district sports day, I again won the same races. The countries sports minister, who was the guest of honor, and the district sports officer, gave some money, I took photos with the police commander, was given a crown by my school mates, got many other prizes and ended up being the junior sports man of the year.
Now the most famous athlete in the school, the talk of surrounding schools including girls schools as a bonus, the bullies began greeting me as ‘sir.’ I had earned their respect. It was funny when other pupils began moving around me so as not to be bullied. I became their protection as no bully dared touch those I moved with. The new earned confidence positively impacted on my studies. I was always among the best performers.
The advice to whoever is being bullied is to discover your best attributes. Like all human beings, know you’re naturally special in one way or the other. Be consistent and work to improve your self, without letting any one derail you. Remember you deserve a wonderful God given life. Who knows, one day, you could end up being called Sir/Madam.
