Born 1940, F, from Florida, United States.jpg)
Sometimes our jobs and outside activities get in the way of all the things that are really important...like spending time with family, our children, and especially our spouse. This is about one of those times...
We had just relocated to Colorado to a nice quiet area in the mountains and were getting acclimated to the fact we had neighbors, something of which we had never experienced before. I mean we had people where we had lived before, that lived in our area, but everyone had acreage, like 20- 1500 acres, and most of those were horse farms. You knew your neighbors, but they weren’t right next door...So we were not used to a typical neighborhood setting. Everyone here was very friendly, bringing casseroles, baked goods, and informing my husband, as he was the one settling us into the new house, of all the activities that were available in the area, that were "family friendly“.
My husband traveled with his job, so he did not have a set schedule which enabled him flexibility, therefore he was home more than I was and took on the responsibility of running the house.
I, on the other hand, being on staff at a new hospital, had a pretty tight schedule and wanted to situate quickly so we could resume our family life as before...With the children in a new school and all the unpacking and pressure that goes into a new environment, it was exasperating, but my husband, being the trooper he was, took charge, and hired a part-time nanny to see after the children when we were both at our jobs...which enabled me to concentrate on my career....what a guy!
Weeks went by and suddenly it was that time of year, which children look forward to with amazement and fear... ”Hallow’s Eve,“ also known as ”Halloween”. The children were looking forward to doing trick or treat, as they had never experienced it before in a neighborhood, as in door to door. The local community center where we had lived did a haunted hayride and a costume party. My husband took charge of the new adventure, and the costumes...and everyone was excited.
One night as I crawled in bed after working a 48 hour shift, due to heavy snow, preventing hospital staff from getting to work and 100% occupancy at the hospital, I vaguely remembered hearing my husband mention the costumes the children were going to wear, and how the neighbors here celebrated Halloween differently....I answered “that’s nice, sounds great“ and went comatose....
Next morning I awoke to find a note on the pillow, my husband had written, “flew to Tennessee for a meeting, will return in 2 days". I got dressed and went to the kitchen for coffee. When I arrived at the kitchen to make breakfast, the nanny had already fed the children and the bus had already picked them up. I had not had a chance to sit and talk with her since her hire, so we sat at the table and had a nice chat.
Since moving in to the new house, the children and I had not spent much one on one time together, so I took advantage of the week-end. We played board games and they told me all about their new school and the friends they had met. My husband called, snow would delay his flight so the children and I went out for Pizza.
The night before Halloween my husband got home, but I had already left for the hospital. The E.R. was extremely busy that day and I ended up working longer than I had anticipated...and it was then that I realized, I had not spent any time with my husband since the move. Some of the other Doctors and I were on a break in the lounge, when one of them got to talking about his experience with his wife ...due to lack of quality time sometimes you just have to be creative, he said... the intercom blared “code blue“ and everyone left... Later in the early evening before leaving, I asked him to explain the statement he made in the lounge...HE DID...
As I drove home what he had said rolled around in my head...It was perfect...I set my plan in motion... When I arrived home, the nanny was handing out candy. They’ve all gone trick or treating she said...I asked her if she could stay a little longer, as I wanted to take a shower. No problem, she said. I headed to the master bath...
I went to my closet and picked out my attire...this was going to be a Halloween to remember!
My make-up (which I very seldom wore) was pretty awesome and those little black strapped heels that I had worn only twice, made me feel very sexy.. and I made sure I sprayed myself with the perfume my husband had bought on my last birthday... As I was slipping on my coat, I heard my husband’s voice....a few minutes later I heard the nanny, she put the children to bed and then said good-night and left... I heard the front door close...
I thought, I will slip out through the back door, as my husband was just locking up the front door. As I walked around the house outside... I heard voices. As I mentioned earlier, we now lived in a neighborhood, so this is not unusual. I walked up on to the front porch...and knocked on the door. I heard my husband as he was walking across the hardwood floor...the porch lights went on... the the door flew open... as did my raincoat...and it fell to the floor.... I shouted out “Trick or Treat".....There I was flashing my naked body in all it’s glory....to none other than the husband of one of our new neighbors, and the rest of the neighborhood.
Funny, but in that instant it all came back, the night when my husband said “the neighbors here celebrate Halloween differently“, yeah after the children go to bed, the parents get together at one house and sort through all the candy.
No one ever spoke about that night, and we don’t live in Colorado any more.
PS. True story....names/ cities/hospitals were not mentioned to protect the innocent...
