A Butterfly Cause
Born 2004, F, from Portland, Oregon, United StatesAs I looked upwards, a group of bright blue butterflies was flying in the direction of the city's capital. It seemed to be herding me across the grass and into the white marble building. As if in a trance, I stumbled around in blind space. With a gut feeling, I was heading in the right direction. Where were my glasses anyway? Suddenly, I found a playful fingernail tapping my new green sweater. "Maurice..... get back here!" I whipped my head around long enough to see a pair of deep blue eyes smirking at me from behind. She was my best friend; the only one who dared to play tricks on me. Maurice handed me my glasses and slyly slipped away. I fastened them on my small nose and marched off to the city hall. When I got there, the first thing I saw was a flash of blue. The butterfly, my mind screamed! When I looked closer, I realized it was just a sign. The poster read, "Butterfly Execution Protest Saturday! Come one, come all to defend these beautiful creatures from death!" Hmmm, I didn't know they we're being executed, but I also didn't know you could execute butterflies. Well, I decided to join the argument. I signed my name on the sheet and walked home. On Saturday, I had a great case of the jitterbugs. My mind quickly formed lists of all the preparations I needed. I had my cardboard sign ready to wave. My mom was driving Maurice and I to the rescue of the butterflies. They would receive no harm. Lickety split, I dressed in my best outfit and raced out the door. As we headed to Century Park, I heard screaming all around. The protest had started! I marched up to the podium and declared, "we need to save the butterflies because they care about us. So we should care about them!" The crowd roared while the Governor frowned. After some time, he gave in. We had won! Soon after, we celebrated at an ice cream shop. "Celebratory sprinkles," Maurice shouted as we burst out loud with festive cheer!
