Distraction

The school day ended liked many others. Papers started flying throughout the hallways while students high-fived each other, excited about the weekend. This may be what you imagine, but in reality all you see is kids walking down the halls staring at their phones. You walk over to your car and imagine your weekend. Homework, homework, homework. Going to the best school in the state isn't a great few years of your life. You start noticing your lack of quality clothing and your social awkwardness when you go to revisit your old friends. It will all be worth it in the future, you reassure yourself...

"Ughhh..this piece of crap, why won't it unlock the door. I seriously must be the only person who has a car from the nineteenth century. I can't wait to get a job at Subway and at least get some 2009 VW or something, not this hunk of junk Corolla." Suddenly I feel someone breathing behind me and feel a pat on my shoulder. "Hi Annabel, can I help you with anything?' I turn around and see Mrs. Burkina, my science teacher, standing behind me with her hands full of textbooks. No sooner than I could speak, the car door unlocked. "Have a great weekend and don't forget to memorize the periodic table for the test Monday" she quipped as I started driving away. "Great, I thought, like I don't have enough homework."

As I approached the intersection of 2nd and Allen, the familiar vibrating caught me off guard. As I reached to grab my phone I did not notice the light turn red as a black Hummer veered to the left of me, trying to avoid a head on collision. The Hummer's driver succeeded; the driver of the volkswagon behind him was not so lucky.

Beeping sirens suddenly filled my head. I heard people around me as clear as day. I couldn't speak, even when asked. "My baby, how did this happen?" my mom screamed. Thoughts raced through my head, textbooks, phones and teacher whizzed by and suddenly I remembered. Judy had texted me. I had picked up but before I could slide to answer everything went blank. I tried to talk, to whisper, to scream, but nothing came out. "She is in critical condition, and is in a coma, time is needed." A doctor near my bed said while scribbling on a clipboard. Time? I didn't have much time, I needed to study as fast as possible for tomorrow was my science test. That's the last thought I had before everything went silent.
