My Little Sister.
Born 1999, F, from Perth, Western Australia, AustraliaIt happened in the playground. I felt like I was there but I couldn't do anything to help. The girl was beating her up. My own little ten year old sister was being beat up and I felt so powerless. She was having nasty comments thrown at her. “Why are you so dumb?” “Why can't you be like the rest of us?!” another one yelled.
I wasn't with her. But I knew something was happening. From that moment on, I knew that my sister and I had our own special little bond.
I was in science when I had the feeling that something was wrong. Knowing I would get in trouble, I pulled my phone out of my pocket and quickly sent my mum a text. “Is Shannen alright?” It was too late. The teacher saw my phone. I got it taken off me and got a yard duty. That didn't bother me. I waited anxiously until the end of class to get my phone back. RIIING! Went the bell. I jumped up and got my phone.
Mum had texted me back. “I have to go and pick her up from school,” the text read. I felt absolutely gutted. How can kids be so nasty to hurt someone just because they're different? Just because they're not as smart, or not as athletic? I was so mad.
I had to see my sister. I had to know exactly what happened. The bell went for the end of the day. I ran from my class to the bus stop. And when I got off the bus, ran straight to the train station. I got home and gave my sister the biggest hug!
Black eye, grazed knees, parts of her hair were ripped out. My heart sank. She told me everything that happened while she had tears running down her face. She told me what happened. “I got an answer wrong in class. All the kids laughed at me. They said to me that I was so dumb and I should just kill myself.” I was so upset, I wanted to give those kids a proper hiding, what they deserve! But calmly, I asked what the question was. She's dyslexic, so I knew it would be easy.
She told me that the teacher asked her how to spell 'cat'. She raised her hand in confidence and spelled out the letters 'c,t,a'. She continued telling me what happened. “It was lunchtime, she pushed me against the wall, punched me in the face a lot, and then she dragged me along the concrete floor by the hair until a teacher stopped her.”
I wanted to kill that girl, she ruined my sister. My sister has no self confidence any more, she struggles with everything. And it's all because of that one nasty girl who needs to be taught a lesson. I have to take care of my little sister. She is mine, and I love her with every last bit of my heart.

01/17/2023Awe, such a sad and all too real story. Bullying happens all the time on the playground. Thank goodness you were there when your sister needed you. Great heartfelt story.
Blessings Shelly
