The wind was blowing hard outside. My house- or so I called a mansion, faced the ocean, where the waves were surging turbulently. On any other night, I could see fractures of moonlights on the sea. It was so beautiful that I could just stare at it all night. I spaced out for a sec until Clarissa called me from my bathroom door.
“Hey! Bianca. Come here for a bit.”
Clarissa could be described as a petite blonde chick with a really gifted mouth. She likes to blabber and talk in such a rush.
“Yes, I’m coming Clare.”
As I entered the bathroom, she pointed out to the dim light from the corner of the room, where light should be pointing to Hera, the goddess of marriage head sculpture.
“You’re calling me to point out a dim light?” I scoffed.
“Yes! Of course Bee. For 10 years of friendship and I still don’t get it why your father has such a weird fetish!”
“Just call Alex, the house’s maintenance and tell him to switch the bulb.”
“And Venus de Milo’s half naked sculpture on your living room, it’s just off limit okay.” She stared at me. “Stop it Clare. You know Venus is and always will be my father’s favorite of all the Greek myths sculptures decorating my house. And additionally, he just bought it months ago. And worth thousands of dollars.”
I rolled my eyes and walked back to the bedroom, suited myself on the bed. I stared at the ceiling and recount all of those Greek myths sculptures in our mansion. Zeus, Poseidon, Athena, Hades, Apollo, Theseus and many more. Father once told me that Greek myth meant so much to him. And he would pay more for security just for those statues to stay in their place.
“Come in!”
I shouted when I heard the door knocked. I saw my father’s brown hair poking from the door and he came to my direction.
“Hello my darling, oh hello Clarissa, I don’t see you there.” Father said when he saw her.
“Hi Mr. Cavendish! Sorry for staying this late though.”
“It’s okay Clarissa, make yourself at home.” He smiled warmly to Clarissa.
“So… father, what’re you going to tell me now?”
He held my hand and said, “I need to go to Florence to attend some auction for a rare Dionysus carved sculpture darling...”
I stayed quiet for a bit and cut in.
“Yes father I know, I’ll call Josephine to stay over and babysit Beth like always.” I ended it with a sarcastic tone.
“It’s not like that darling, Evelyn took a flight to Florence this morning to meet some acquaintances.” “What? Father, I thought mother was going to some meeting nearby. She called me earlier and told me she’s in a meeting.” I whined.
“Yes Bianca sweetheart, I’m going to pick your mother up and win that auction too. I wanted to bring Dionysus and let his sculpture accompany Venus on the living room.” He smiled warmly to me.
“Do you even know how many of those Greek statues decorating our interior? Especially that curvy half naked Venus sculpture standing on our living room?” I stared into his deep blue eyes.
“I thought we’ve discussed on how important those myths to me Bianca Cavendish. That Venus sculptures worth me thousands of dollar.” Oh no, father took that don’t-you-dare-bianca-cavendish look.
“Okay father have a safe flight from Milan.” I finally gave in.
“Goodnight Bianca. Don’t pick a fight with your sister. Little Beth might cry. And I hate it when my daughters cry.”
“Okay. Goodnight father.”
I didn’t realize it’s 3 p.m. already. Clarissa accompanied me to saloon after dropping father off to the airport. He did tell me something:
“Sweetheart, I want you to be a good girl and don’t spend too much money on shopping. Don’t forget to tell Josephine that I’ll be back tomorrow night.”
I really don’t feel like going home. Since shopping with Clare was addictive, her sense of fashion was really good. But then I remembered the need to call. I fished out my phone from my purse and called Josephine. “Yes Bee?” she answered on the second ring.
“Umm... Joey, do me a favor and don’t tell father okay?”
“What now Bee?” I could imagine her rolling her eyes now.
“It’s just, home’s empty and I don’t feel like sleeping alone. So… I’m planning on staying at Clare’s house tonight. And before you started to complain, I’m 16.”
Silence filled both line, and a few moments later she finally replied.
“Okay I’ll not tell Cavendish about this but make sure you’ll be home by 1 p.m. tomorrow Bee. Let me tell you, don’t try to be unpunctual.”
“Yes Joey. Oh and please babysit Beth for me.”
Before I hung up, Clare poked my shoulder and said, “Is it aunty J?”
I looked at her and gave that who-else look. “Obviously it is. And good news is I’ll be staying at your house tonight. Under Joey’s approval.”
“Hey! Cut it out, I’m going napping. I’m done feeding your little sister Bee and she’s fast asleep for now.” Joey exclaimed from the other line.
“Bye aunty J.”
“Bye Joey. Thank you for babysitting Beth like old times.” She hung up.
After a whole day spending money and food hunting, Clare decided to go for a bubble bath. But I took shower instead. I go to her room and stood on her old-vintage brown dressing table. I could see my own reflection with that brown highlighted hair, green eyes and Claire’s nightgown. I didn’t realize it was 11.47 p.m. already and decided to check my phone. So I bent down and pull the charger from the socket. Then I felt a twinge of pain on my right arm. When I checked my reflection, I saw a long scratch about 5 inches long and cursed instead. I joined Clare at her bathroom and took some medical kit to fix my wound.
A moment later, I’m done putting some medicinal iodine and covered it with Band-Aid. And Clare was still enjoying her cozy lavender bubble bath. When I’m lied down on her bed, I finally checked my phone and found 11-missed call from Joey. Suddenly, I felt so uneasy and anxious. Joey doesn’t usually spam me with some calls and 5 text messages. I tried to call her back but she didn’t pick her phone up.
2 hours later, after chit chatting with Clare, she was already fast asleep. She must be really tired after spending the whole day doing girls thing. I switched off her bedroom lights and drifted to sleep with anxiety in my heart.
The next morning, that uneasy feeling still keeping me anxious and I really wanted to go home to see Beth and Joey. Seconds later, my phone rang and I took it from the nightstand. I saw Joey’s auburn hair with her hazel eyes and her high cheekbone. I picked the call up on the 3rd ring.
“Good morning Joey! I’ve bee…” I was cut by Joey’s frantic tone.
“Bianca! I need you home now! Right now!”
from the other line, I could hear Beth’s crying mixed with the loud police’s siren. I suddenly felt nauseous and worried about the situation.
“Joey! What happened last night? How’s Beth? H-how do you feel?” I went frantic and woke Clare up.
“Just come home Bee! I’ll explain everything later!” she hung up.
The 15 minutes drive from Clare’s house took forever. On those 15 minutes, tension filled my surrounding atmosphere and I couldn’t keep my feet stop bouncing and the goose bumps on my skin.
“Calm down Bee! Everything’s going to be alright.”
Clare cocked her head from the driver’s seat.
“I can’t help it Clare. Please speed up! I’m worried about Joey and Beth!”
Seconds later, we’re on the mansion’s gate and Clare sped up to the mansion’s door that’s filled with polices and detectives. I climbed down from the car and stumbled on my way to Joey and Beth. Clare’s following right behind me.
“Joey! Beth!”
I hugged crying Beth and lift up from the ground. She clung to me and squeezed me so hard.
“Bee! I tried calling you for hours! Where were you?”
“Sorry Joey. I switched off my phone yesterday night. What happened?”
“I called your parents and they’re on their way back to Milan. And the polices were her since last night patrolling.”
“What. Happened. Joey?”
then she explained me everything that occurred last night at this mansion.
“Yesterday, I came to your house 2 p.m. through the back door after picking up Beth from her course. I borrowed your driver, James, and asked him to drop us on the back door of the gate. Because it is faster through the back road, so I shortcut our trip home. Then I told James to just park the car on the garage and put the key on the adjacent storage room where all the keys were usually kept. Then I prepared food for Beth and fed her on her room. I was really tired and my head went heavy after napping Beth. That is the moment when you called me to do you a favor. And then after checking Beth’s books and stationaries, I took a nap beside her and woke up around 5 p.m. I took a bath on the guest room and wanted to make some juice, so I went down straight to the kitchen because my stomach was crumbling. Shortly after past 6.30 p.m., I checked on Beth who’s still fast asleep. So I did some laundry and fold some of your clothes along with your parents and Beth’s. I ended cleaning up at 7.10 p.m. and decided to watch for a bit. So I went to the guest room and turned on the TV. But apparently, the cable was snapped and I cannot watch the international channel. Then I almost went to your room to watch there. But then I remembered your parents don’t allow either Beth or you to have a TV. So I made a U turn and went to the balcony to call your parents for permission to watch on their room, because I don’t have other time to watch the TV series. The sky was already dark after I’m done calling your parents. They asked about your condition and Beth’s and I covered for you as I promised. Then I got the permission to watch from your parent’s room on the first floor. So I went down to the first floor and entered their room. I switched on the light, closed the door and sit on the couch to watch. But then something moving caught my eyes from afar. So I cocked my head to the glass window, where the moving gesture caught my eyes. The curtain did not cover the window because your parents weren’t around. With mixed feeling of fear and anxiety, I decided to call your father again. Because your mother was having a meeting when I called on the balcony. Your dad picked the phone on the 1st ring and greeted me with cheerful tone. But then I asked him a permission to close the window’s curtain or at least cover up the creepy, curvy, half naked women with no arms sculpture outside his room. The line went silent for a while, and then your father ordered me to brought Beth and you out of the house. He’s said he’ll call the police immediately. That’s when I bombarded you with calls that went straight to your voicemail. But I was too afraid to step out of the house so I just went to Beth’s room to keep her save. So I tiptoed to her room and locked both of us inside. I woke Beth up and told her to stay quiet until all areas are secured. I’m sure I really went pale and felt nauseous when I sat on the edge of Beth’s bed hugging her with fear. I don’t hear any loud or low sound from the house, your house is big and it’ll surely echo through the room if something just clatters on the floor. But Bee, let me tell you what I feared the most…”
Oh my god. I stopped listening for a while and rose up my hand to pause her. I really felt nauseous and my feet were trembling. Father never put any sculpture outside his bedroom door. I spaced out for a bit and then Joey continued without my mark.
“…Your father told me, and I quote ‘we do not have any half-naked woman sculpture outside my bedroom window.’”
And just like that, the police found all 5 securities dead within some countable minutes. And no Venus de Milo sculpture was ever found.
