It was just an ordinary day for anyone but it wasn't for Ridley and his two best friends, Alice and Jane. The three girls were childhood friends. Since they were little, they played together, shared secret together and did all the girly stuff together. Ridley was the tomboy one among them. With short hair, t-shirt and jeans, she looked like a boy except the earrings she wore. Alice was the type of a smart, diligent girl. She wore glasses and like Ridley, she liked to wear t-shirt and jeans. She always tied her hair into a ponytail. Whereas Jane, she was the feminine type of girl. She was the most stylish one among the three. With her large collection of shoes, bags and clothes, she was the most popular girl at school. Most of her things were also had pink in them. Really feminine!
Today was their first day of summer holiday and they had planned to stay at Alice’s new villa in South Dakota for a week. They were allowed to go there because they got good scores in their tests. Their parents allowed them to go alone because they were old enough. Alice’s father would just drop them in the train station and from there they would travel by themselves.
To get there earlier and to save time, Jane and Ridley spent the night at Alice’s house. At precisely 6 a.m, they were ready to go. They arrived at the train station and rode the first train to South Dakota. After arriving at South Dakota’s station, they took a taxi to the villa. The villa wasn't far from the station. They arrived at the villa at noon. Because it was a new villa, the villa was all dusty and full of spider webs.
“Sorry guys. But I think we need to clean up a bit,” said Alice, felling guilty for asking her friends to clean the villa.
“It’s okay. It’s new anyway,” said Ridley.
“Clean. Clean. Clean,” said Jane cheerfully.
So the three girls cleaned the villa and it took them 5 hours.
“Finally, it’s done,” said Jane. “I’m so tired.”
“Me too,” said Ridley. “Alice, where is our room?”
“Oh, it’s the room on the second floor. We’ll be sleeping in one room, by the way,” replied Alice.
“I’ll go take a bath,” said Jane. She could not stand not being able to clean herself after contacting with dust.
“OK. I’ll help Alice with dinner,” said Ridley.
Then, Jane went upstairs and went to take a bath while both Alice and Ridley made dinner. One hour later, the three girls were having dinner and chatting. They talked about the villa, about how simple looking it is and the beautiful scenery behind it. Alice told them that they could go take some photos tomorrow morning when they sun had just rise. She told them that it was one of the best moments. After dinner, they went to the bedroom and watched some DVDs. It was around 10 when they fell asleep. At dawn, the three girls were awake. They went downstairs and went to the backyard. They were on time as the sun was starting to rise. The girls saw the phenomena in awe. What Alice had said last night was true, it was indeed one of the best scenery the girls had ever seen. They took many pictures. After that they had breakfast and roam around the villa, playing. When they are playing…
Bruk! Ridley tripped over something and fall.
“Ouch!” screamed Ridley. Upon hearing her scream, Jane and Alice quickly ran to her and help her up.
“Are you okay?” asked Jane.
“Are you hurt somewhere?” asked Alice.
“No, I’m fine. I think my hand was bruised,” said Ridley. They looked at her wound. It was just a bruise nothing serious. When they wanted to go back to the villa, Alice’s eye catches the bump on the soil which made Ridley fall.
“Guys, look,” said Alice, pointing at the bump. “Jane, can I get a shovel please?”
“Here,” said Jane, giving the shovel to her. Alice dug into the bump and they found an antique box.
“Open it,” said Ridley. She was curious what was inside the box.
Alice opened it and found a torn paper and a necklace. The paper was actually a map. They were both surprised. They took a look at the map, it was actually a map of the forest near the villa but they don’t know what necklace it was.
“Guys, I think I know the necklace. I've seen it somewhere,” said Alice. “Oh, I remember. It was in the internet about the lost artifacts of North Dakota’s Museum.”
“How did you know?” asked Jane.
“I saw it a few days ago.”
“OK, then we’ll return the necklace to them and we can continue to enjoy our trip again,” said Jane.
“But what do we do with the map?” asked Ridley. “Guys do you think we can….?”
Both Alice and Jane knew what was in Ridley's mind. Alice had the same thought but Jane strongly disapproved. She didn't like adventure because it includes walking on dirty places which she hated the most. Both Ridley and Alice persuaded Jane to go, but she kept saying no. At last, she changed her mind after Alice promised her that they would go accompany her shopping for a month. So they packed and started their journey. They kept the necklace and followed the map. They went into the forest. It was quite dark because the trees were big and tall. They reached the ‘X’ point on the map and saw the bump just like the one they found near the villa. They dug it and this time they found a ring and the continuation of the map. They continued their journey, but it was night time, so they took a rest. The next morning, they continued and every time they reached the ‘X’ they found jewelry and the map. After 3 days of journey, they had found 9 jewelries in total. They were very happy because they were like treasure hunting. But little did they know that 3 pairs of eyes had been spying on them.
“Who would've hid these artifacts? They were very valuable and the ones we found are at the list of lost jewelries,” said Alice.
“Maybe they stole it and hid it under a bump. It was a hint and also a disguise. Ordinary people who didn't know about it without the map and they would thought that it was only a bump,” said Ridley.
“And whoever did this knows the place very well and they had done it for several times,” said Jane.
“What you girls said are true,” said a deep voice behind them. They turned around and saw 3 muscular men standing.
“We are the one who stole it. Those artifacts were worth millions of dollars,” said the man with a bad scar on his face.
“We didn't think that the villa was already occupied. We thought of moving the artifacts so that no one will know of this, but you girls know about this and we need to get rid of you,” said the tallest man among them.
The three men caught each of the girls and anesthetize them. But among them, only Jane didn't faint. She was just hallucinating and feeling high. She realized how they blindfold them and brought them to a place. They were seated and tied to a chair. The men were waiting for them to wake up. They woke up and saw the three men were whispering to each other.
“Mike, what should we do to them,” said the man with the scar to their leader.
“You are not thinking of killing them, aren't you?” asked the tall man.
“We need to get rid of them and it was the only way,” said Mike.
They didn't realize that the three girls had already woken up.
“Ridley, what are we gonna do?” asked Jane, she was getting scared and nervous. “Alice?”
Alice didn't know what to do so she just shook her head. She looked at Ridley. “Ridley?”
Both Alice and Jane looked at Ridley and were confused to see her closing her eyes.
“What are you girls whispering about?” asked Mike, suddenly standing beside them.
“Nothing that concerns you,” said Jane. She was extremely angry at him.
“We’ll just leave them here,” said Mike to his two companions. The three men left them. One hour passed, two hour passed, they realized that it was night already. Suddenly, the door was opened and the man with the scar came in.
“Here have your dinner,” he said, giving them 3 bowls of soup.
“How are we supposed to eat when our hands are tied?” said Jane.
“Fine. I’ll untie it. Just for a while,” he said.
Seeking the opportunity, after she was untied, Ridley quickly attacked the man. She had studied martial arts before and knocked the man out. Both Jane and Alice were surprised and amazed at her actions.
“Stop staring. Let’s go,” said Ridley. The three girls escaped but met with Mike and the tall guy. Both of them block the girls. Two strong men versus three teenage girls. Of course, the two men got the upper hand and caught the girls again. Mike locked them in a dark room. But this time they were not tied.
“Oh no. We’re trapped again,” said Ridley. “I’m sorry guys, I should have thought more about attacking the man.”
“It’s okay as long as we stayed together,” assured Jane.
“Yeah. Don’t worry,” added Alice.
The three girls hugged each other. After that, they talked about on how they can escape the place. Firstly, they roamed around the room trying to get a clear view of where they were.
“Guys, look what I found,” said Alice, showing them a lighter. She lit it and the room was visible to them and they were shocked to see what was inside the room. The room was filled with treasures! They also found their bags and the jewelries.
“These men are professional thieves,” said Jane, looking at the artifacts.
“Not too professional, we found them,” said Ridley. “Right, Alice? Alice, where are you?”
“Over here,” Alice answered.
Ridley and Jane approached her. She was squatting in front of the door with a hairpin, poking the key hole. “I am trying to unlock the door. So difficult. I think hairpin won’t help. Anyone has a chain or something?”
“I have,” said Jane. “Is bracelet okay?”
Alice nodded. She took the bracelet and unlocks the door. Click! The door was opened. They grabbed their bag and the jewelries. “Ready?” three of them nodded and ran out as fast as they could. They ran out of the thief’s lair and into the forest. “Follow me,” said Jane. They followed Jane and an hour later they were in Alice’s villa again. They quickly called the police. The police came and they reported the thieves and the stolen things. Jane led them to the lair again and they caught the three men, who were trying to escape. The police thanked them for helping in catching those men as they were the ones who the police had been chasing for a long time. As for the artifacts, all of it was returned to the museum. The mayor and the director of the museum were very thankful and awarded them. Now they were known as the brave girls who uncovered the robbery.
-A week after that-
“How do you remember the way Jane?” asked Ridley, curious on how she managed to remember the way.
“Well, the drug didn't totally anesthetize me and how I remembered the way, never underestimate the memory of a shopaholic,” answered Jane, winking. “And Alice, how do you know how to unlock the door without a key?”
“Well, few readings would do,” she answered, grinning.
Hearing the answers, they laughed.
