I was in the lounge with my colleagues taking a break. And suddenly the head scientist in our laboratory rushed in and yelled immediately,
“I NEED ALL OF YOU IN THE MEETING ROOM. NOW!”
I finished my drink and made my way to the assigned place. Dr. Forrester began his speech after everybody was finally gathered there, “Earlier I found a piece of information about the Baako monkeys, which are the essential subjects for our next big project. They actually lived in the New Guinea forest and also I will send a group consisting of seven members, four of which are from our group of scientists; Mann, David, Rose and… Helena. The rest of the members will assist you in your expedition. You will start the in the next two days and a ferry will transport you all there. Start preparing, rest well and take care, thank you.” I almost objected when he said my name but he quickly left after his short speech, leaving me no time to negotiate.
2 days later, I was standing on the harbor with my fellow scientists, an expedition guide and a police especially assigned to protect us. And as the ferry arrived we board it and sat quietly. After long, long hours of sitting uncomfortably, stuck with the view of only water, we reached the New Guinea jungle and got our compasses and maps out. “Okay, we need to catch 2, or if possible, 3 of those monkeys and bring them back to lab,” said David, trying to break the ice between all of us. “Yes, we knew that.” Rose quickly replied
We started to hike the mountains to find signs of the monkeys. The road was awful; I almost fell down a lot of times. After a few minutes of hiking I heard a sound, like whispers or something. I looked around but David, behind me, told me to keep walking so I did. After a half minute, I heard another sound, this time louder, and it’s more like a shriek. I kept on walking but then Rose stopped and I bumped to her. I saw something crept out of the bushes beside us, it was a creature, as tall as our knees, it had a hunched back, it was the Baako monkey; It grabbed David and hit his head with a rock it’d been carrying and he instantly passed out, the monkey dragged him out of our sight, the police and the ferry driver tried to save David. But another monkey came out of nowhere and attacked the ferry driver furiously, it was killing him. The police ran away from the scene. Nobody even dared to come near it. And then it let out a high-pitched scream and looked straight at all of us. “RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN!” I heard the guide in front shout.
We ran as fast as we could, I don’t know where I was heading to, I was still in the state of shock, but I just ran. Until I thought I was far enough, I stopped. Mann and Rose were with me, I didn't know where the others went. “I think we should all go back home, I don’t want to die here,” Rose whimpered while sobbing. “No. Yer not gon' die here, none of us remainin' scientists arr gon' die.” Mann tried to comfort her. “Yeah, it’ll be a waste to come so far just to go back again, though I’m also scared by those things, but we just need to be extra careful.” I continued.
Mann helped Rose up and we began walking. We had lost most of our things, actually Mann and Rose had lost their backpacks, but I still had my little bag with me containing a compass, a notebook, pens and a map. I tried to remember the pieces of information from my head, it said that the Baako monkeys are “quite” dangerous; in other words, they could kill. I will never understand why we were assigned for this job, really. Nearly an hour after walking something glides In. Front. Of. My. Face. I gasped and nearly fell back. “What was that?!” Rose shout-whispered. “I don’t…” Before I could finish my sentence, a small creature with an arched back grabbed Rose’s face and then her hair, it was dangling on Rose’s head, it dragged Rose down and into the bushes, Mann tried to intervene and even more of the monkeys came and scratched him all over causing him to fall and dragged him into the bushes. I really couldn't believe the scene I just saw, it was like some kind of horror movie. I was so scared, I thought of following them into the bushes but I also thought about the possibility of me dying if I did that. So I just stood there, eyes wide with fear and tears welling in it. I felt so stiff, where could I run to now? I heard Mann screamed, “GIT AWAY FREM MEEE!!” and then I heard something being ripped open, followed by Rose’s bloodcurdling scream.
I turned around to escape just to see another one of those monkeys running towards me. I ran to the opposite direction as fast as I could, I sprinted along the muddy and rocky trails, branches smacking into my dirty, tear-stained cheeks, twigs scratching my face. But I didn't care, all I knew was to escape from the wrath of the monkey chasing me. I ran but stumbled upon a huge tree root which I didn't notice was there, I struggled to get up but the monkey already caught up with me, it was on my back; punching me. I tried so hard to turn over and grabbed the monkey with my bare hands and pushed it aside. I took a branch then I swiftly got up. I ran at full speed once I saw a bridge in the distance, “why was there a bridge anyway?” I thought. When I was halfway at the bridge, the monkey was already in front of me; I ran to it as fast as I could and hit it with the branch until it fell to the huge river below. I breathed out a heavy sigh of relief and continued to the other side of the bridge. My stomach twisted after all of the things that happened.
I felt so sick, I fell bottom first on the ground. I never thought an expedition would turn out to be like this, then again, why was I assigned? I could've just done research in the lab and not this. I sat quietly for an hour or so, when it seemed like the fog in my mind has ascended; I tried walking again. The sun was setting down; I needed to look for a shelter, precisely, a hiding place. I kept walking and walking until the sun was completely set. I hadn't any torchlight with me, so I walked slowly, almost creeping. After I walked for what seemed like ages, I eventually found a cave. I walked inside the cave and moved by tracing the wall, because it was pitch-black dark; it also had a little stream flowing on the other side, I could hear the water flowing. I decided to rest my legs here. I got closer to take a sip from the stream but it smelled weird, something like iron. I decided not to drink from it and looked around, trying to focus my eyesight in the darkness, I thought I saw something moving in the far corner.
I squinted to see more, but I failed. I crept slowly and steadily towards it. After a few minutes of struggling I eventually let out a whisper, “Hello?” He turned towards me, and sniffled a little. It turned out to be the police, who failed miserably to protect himself (but was assigned to protect the six of us). “He had been crying,” I thought to myself. He whispered something back but I cannot quite hear what he was saying. “What is it, sir?” This time he said louder, “The guide has died...monkeys…I will also die soon,” He paused, “I don’t want to die, I don’t want to die…” I started to cry again. He kept on mumbling for a few seconds before stopping, his breath also stopped. I couldn't do anything to help him. The monkeys had horribly attacked him. I cried silently, now I realized I’m all alone, maybe I will face the same fate as all of them. I didn't know how to send signals back to my lab or my country, and I was lacking food, drink and safety. I was hoping a rescue team could sense that I need them here. But I guess that was just impossible. I am probably going to die anyway.
So I wrote this journal, to tell the people who found this, that this was how our team ends up. And if you were sent here to search for us, please be very careful and silent. I suggest you leave as fast as you could, before they caught you.
