The Beach
Born 2001, M, from Portland Oregon, United StatesThe keys on my laptop started flying beneath my fingertips as I watched the clock. I knew I had to type fast, for I was only given a specific amount of time to check my email. As I got in the car, I thought about the distance we had to cover to get to our destination. The place where land and sea met the ocean. we were going to the beach for my little brother's chess competition.
The car miraculously stopped at a hotel. I squinted my eyes at the setting sun and the white brick that was blocking a vast majority of the light. At first glance, the best western ocean front hotel did not look like a five star hotel. However, don't judge a book by it's cover. Looks can be deceiving, and this was relevant at the hotel where we stayed at. The vast and ample lobby was enough to give a sense of what to expect at our suite. The cozy room was fitted with a balcony that overlooked the ocean, a fire place, a full kitchen complete with a stove, sink, microwave, and refrigerator, and a flip-out bed that was a sofa.
It was late, so we had dinner, and went to sleep. The next day, we exited the hotel to go the the chess competition. The convention center in which the event was held was a 2 story building with a large auditorium in which the competitors and their family sat. The competition room was the size of a large classroom, and contained many chess sets and chairs for the competitors. My family and I waited while my little brother played chess.
While my little brother went to play chess, Me and my mother went to the beach. As we walked across the shore line, I noticed how tranquil it was today. Normally, the beach is packed head to toe. However, the current season was spring and there were not many visitors. We stepped off the sidewalk and on to the soft sand. we took pictures of the ocean and of the rocks. Then we departed for the convention center.
We drove home with our heads drooped. My sibling had won 3 out of five games. However, he played against people that had a lower ranking (a system in chess to show how good a player is) than him. Depressed, we drove home. Still the chess competition did not hinder my memories of the beach.
