The Renaissance
Born 1969, M, from Herten, NRW, Germany.jpg)
When Pope Julius II asked Michelangelo Buonarotti if he wanted to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel with fresco paintings, the artist was uninterested. He was a sculptor, not a painter. His colleague Raphael's popularity, however, made him rethink his decision. So, it came to pass that two brilliant artists worked simultaneously in the Vatican. Raphael painted the private rooms of Pope Julius, Michelangelo the ceiling. In the end, Raphael included Michelangelo in his artwork. Around the same time, we had da Vinci working on a painting that would become his most famous. A merchant's wife posed for him to please her husband. Maybe herself, as well. Later on, that painting became known as the Mona Lisa, although the name was a misunderstanding. Mona had been abriviated from the word Madonna.
Italians didn't limit themselves to art. Over a decade earlier, a man from Genua had discovered a new continent. It was not clear to him that he had, though. Naturally, this discovery had its effect on the attitude and self confidence of Europe. These obvious political changes spread across the countries and createdfoundation for Machiavelli's renowned book "The Prince". It influenced rulers like Henry VIII to separate his English church from the Vatican. Swedish King Gustav Vasa was inspired by this and created the same scenario in his own country.
The overall consensus was that mankind became more aware of himself, able to create his own future.
Rebirth was the key word. Renaissance meant that man could reinvent himself.
Discovery has always been the most prominent human characteristic.
