the calender
Born 2001, M, from Portland Oregon, United StatesThe swimming pools and the drinks made me think Cancun was a sit-down, relaxing, and tropical place. I thought that we would swim freestyle for one hour, have two strawberry smoothies and then build a sandcastle at the beach from dawn to dark. This was the daily agenda happening each day. So, when we had to rent a car during my third day of staying at Mexico, I was surprised and upset, because I was not used to getting out of the hotel; plus I really wanted a strawberry smoothie.
The endless driving mixed with the hot sun was nauseating. I had already quit begging for a strawberry smoothie and decided to settle for ice water. The boredom of the endless road almost made me fall asleep, but the revving of the engine and sudden bumps from the uneven road kept me awake. The monotony plus the hot sun made me squirmy and unhappy.
When the car stopped, a tsunami of relief washed over my entire body like if somebody had sucked all the misery out of me. We had arrived at Chichen Itza(a sacred Mayan calender that is the size of a building). After walking a short distance, I noticed that it was hotter here than it was in the car. When we got to the font gate, buying tickets took forever. Finally, after what felt like hours, we went to Chichen Itza.
A gigantic, magnificent rock statue loomed above me. It looked like an ancient pyramid that was built by the Egyptians, but instead of having flat panels it had stairs and a small room on the top. Many people were gazing at it in awe. I thought that the tower looked beautiful with its graceful, hand cut stone that towered over people. “The gigantic structure was used as a calendar,” said a guide that we were eavesdropping on. “It has 91 stairs on each side. Because the structure has four sides, it has 364 stairs, representing the 364 days in a year. The room on the top was supposed to be the 365th day”. After the guide finished his lecture, we moved on to the next building. With its stone slabs, and its two large snakes that were entwined, it looked as if it would guard the building forever. I saw an information sigh and read about how Mayans would sacrifice their lives to the gods that they believed in, and people would do this right here by digging their heart out. There were many shops around the area, and when we saw the things for sale, we our entire family started arguing about what souvenir we should buy. We decided to buy a Mayan calendar to keep at our house. After that, we took one look at both towers, and left.
When we arrived back to our hotel, I noticed how much I liked the trip. At first, I wanted a strawberry smoothie and two hours later, I was begging for a Mayan calendar. The place was so attracting that I changed my want list properties. Chichen Itza is beautiful and it is a wonderful place to go for vacation.
