Toto The African Elephant
Born 1975, F, from Chicago, IL, United StatesTOTO “THE AFRICAN ELEPHANT”
It was another busy morning in the jungle. Everything comes to life there with the first rays of sunshine, and this day was no different. All the animals big and small wake up and go about their day. The little ones run and play, the older ones go to find food for their families.
This particular morning a little bunny named “Bowie” was playing around with his sister. They found a little ball in the grass and had a blast rolling it and tossing it to one another. Soon the ball rolled under a very large bush and Bowie’s sister Trixie yelled at him to go get it: “You tossed it there so you get it” she screamed. Bowie, even though he didn’t like it, crawled under the bush, and while reaching to get the ball stumbled upon something furry. This startled him and he jumped back but curiosity prevailed and he crawled under the bush again and patted the furry “thing.” as soon as he touched it he felt it move, and he again jumped away. “What is going on”? Trixie yelled “what is taking you so long”? “You have to come and look at this” Bowie told her, but before Trixie had a chance to come closer the furry object crawled out from under the bush, stretched and looked around with curiosity.
“Where am I?” he asked “Who am I?” he asked also, then he looked at Trixie and said “Mommy!!!!" With so much happiness that Trixie didn’t know what to respond. It took her a second to think and she said “I don’t know who you are but I am not your mommy, are you lost”? “I don’t know” the object replied “I want my mommy” and it started crying.
Bowie and Trixie didn’t know what to say and they felt really bad for the little creature who didn’t even know who it was. Then Bowie had an idea: “Trixie, let’s take him to the old Papa Bear, he is very wise and knows a lot, maybe he can help us find this creature’s mommy”. Trixie agreed. "Come with us" they told the little furry animal, "we will take you to the old Papa Bear, he knows a lot of things, maybe he can help you."
All together they went to look for Papa Bear. On the way they met a bunch of animals. they met a tall giraffe and asked if he knew who the creature may be? But, the giraffe said he does not know. they asked the Lady Fox and a Deer, but no one seemed to have an answer. Finally they found Papa Bear sleeping in his log cabin. Trixie knocked on the door and Papa Bear invited them in.
When they walked in Papa Bear looked at Bowie, Trixie and the little creature in surprise. “Wow" he said, I have not seen one of those in years.” "what?" Asked Bowie. Papa Bear pointed to the little creature and said: “He is an elephant, the descendant of the great African mammoths, they have moved away from living here a long time ago and from what I am aware they are in Africa, so I wonder how this little fellow got here”?
The little creature got very happy and kept repeating: “I am an elephant, I am an elephant. now I know who I am, I just want to find my mommy. Can you help me?" “Well” said Papa Bear, "my only guess would be that not too long ago there was a group of giant elephants trying to save themselves from the flood. some were able to and some were not, but only a few of them who were able to survive moved to the far end of our land where the climate is very similar to the African climate and settled there. It will take you a long time to get there but if you are determined you just may get lucky and find your mom."
The little elephant got so excited that he wanted to leave right away but Papa Bear wanted to give him precise instructions and some food to take along, so that he could make it there safely. The little elephant thanked Papa Bear, Trixie and Bowie and was on his way.
He walked for one week. what really helped him was that elephants have a remarkable ability to keep water in their trunks, so he used the food that was given to him and he was never thirsty since he could get the water out of his trunk as he needed it.
Finally, from far away, he saw some large creatures walking. as he approached closer he realized that they resembled him very closely but simply were a lot bigger. he kept coming closer and closer and as he was almost there he stopped to look at them. he was staring at them in fascination when one of them turned her head and saw him. What happened after that was a miracle. “Toto my son” the large elephant shouted and ran towards him. “You are alive, Toto”. The large elephant approached “Toto” and their trunks intertwined. “Toto kept repeating: Mommy, mommy, I found my mommy.” “Mommy" he said: “I love my name” and smiled.
After that his mother told him how elephants had to save themselves from the flood and she was unable to grab him as the water carried him away so she thought that he drowned, and now that they are together she will never let him out of her sight again. Toto joined the elephant herd and now he is pretty grown up, but he never forgot Trixie, Bowie and Papa Bear who helped him find who he was.
