Not Worth The Price
Born 1996, F, from Wentzville, Mo, United StatesNot Worth The Price
“I couldn't wait any longer to finally start the 8th grade and be the oldest in the school!” Lexie said. Her best friend was Morgan. They did everything together all the time. They would hang out every weekend, share secrets, and have little bonfires together. She looked up to Morgan. She wanted to be just like her because she was popular and had the coolest clothes and a bunch of guy friends. So that’s what she strives for: perfection.
It was the middle of the school day when Lexie texted Leah. She said that her and Morgan had been fighting and her friends were calling her names. Leah, her older sister, didn't know what was going on or why Lexie was being bullied. When Leah got home, she saw Lexie on the couch watching T.V. Her face was red and Leah asked “What happened today?” Simply, Lexie replied, “It’s just boy problems. Not a big deal, my friends were just calling me names.” Leah told her that she was there for her and just blew it off thinking Lexie would get it all figured out.
Leah didn't know what all was going on in school with Lexie or how serious it was. Lexie’s phone dinged, and she read the message out loud to Leah, “I’m so sorry Lex, this fight is so dumb. Please forgive me?” Morgan texted Lexie. Lexie was all excited that she got her best friend back and accepted the apology. After the text sent, she received another one, “You want to come over for dinner and hangout like we used to?” Lexie agreed. Later that night when Lexie got home, Leah was on the couch watching T.V and Lexie walked in crying. Leah knew it was something serious then.
Lexie came up to Leah, “I have to tell you something… when I told you it was just my friends calling me names, I lied. It wasn't just that.” She paused, then kept talking, “They just won't stop. The pushing around, the name calling, the texts, the rumors, it all just won't stop!” She started to tear up and Leah kept listening. “They came to my locker at the end of the day and one of them was whispering to me and said I was useless and no one loved me but I didn't move, I just closed my eyes to try and make it go away.. and when I went to hangout with Morgan, she told me that she was sorry for whispering in my ear.” Morgan was the last person Lexie thought would do something like that. It broke her heart because she thought that they were best friends. Lexie called Morgan, “That was wrong what you did and I’m done trying to be your friend anymore.” She hung up the phone and took a breath of relief. Leah patted her on her back and smiled “I’m proud of you Lex, everything is going to be okay. Maybe go to school tomorrow and try and make a new friend.”
The bell rang after 4th hour the next day at school and Lexie walked out of her class and went to her locker to get her book bag out. The fear in her made her look over her shoulder and both ways down the halls to make sure her ex-friends, now her harassers, were no where in sight. Lexie turned back around facing her locker. There was a bathroom and a water fountain right behind her next to her locker. Her heart was beating fast and her palms started to sweat. So scared that she rushed to open her locker and couldn't do it because she couldn't get the right code for her lock.
Right when she got it open she got her books out for her next hour, shut her locker door and turned around. Before she knew it, she got punched in the face. One of her friends hit her and knocked her to the ground. Then they all got on top of her and started hitting her. Morgan pulled all the girls off of her. Lexie didn't know what had just happened or why Morgan did that when they weren't friends anymore. Morgan told Lexie that she didn't like her but it was never her intention for her to get hurt and didn't think that the other girls were going to do that to her and that she didn't deserve what had happened to her. Lexie looked at Morgan and told her that she had put her through hell and it’s not something you can quickly forgive but that she was thankful for her pulling that girl off of her and helping her out during the fight. She called mom from the office and talked to the principal about what happened.
When mom found out about what happened she was furious with the girls. She waited a few days to see if anything would get better. The girls got Lexie in a lot of trouble. They told the principal that she had drugs in her book bag because they knew she had headache medicine with her and they knew it would get her in trouble. Over time it only got worse. Lexie started to cut. She said she couldn't take her friends anymore and she wanted help. Mom got her a counselor and she found some new friends.
After all said and done, Lexie changed her life around letting the people who mattered most stay, and walked away from the others. She says that being popular and perfect don’t go hand in hand because it will always come with a price and if being bullied and hurt is the price you’ll pay, then it isn't worth it. Lexie tells her story to many people who go through hard times and how she escaped. She tells people that life is to short to be anything but yourself because it’s not worth the price, that being imperfect is perfectly perfect.
