Scarred
Being on the farm was the last place she wanted to be and throwing hay bales was the last thing she wanted to do that day. The heat was dreading, soaking up every last bit of energy she had by the end of the day. Not to mention she only got one break and ended up with a broken phone. She wanted nothing more than a tall glass of ice water and her bed for a nice night of sleep.
Her boyfriend’s name was Andrew. They were innocent and young and they had a connection that no one really understood. They loaded two trailers, 12 feet tall with bales within a few hours. They were proud of themselves in the long run but in the moment they could care less and just wanted it done. She thought the worst day ever was about to end until they headed home.
She got in Andrew’s truck at the end of their long work day and waited for him and her best friend, Courtney, that was with them to join so they could go home. When they were all in the truck about to head out, her dad told Courtney to come ride with him because he didn't want all of them in Andrew’s truck. He knew her and Courtney were going to cause a distraction. Courtney got out and went with her dad and they finally left.
When she and Andrew drove down the road, he drifted and lost control of his truck. They swerved left and right, hitting each side of the road over and over again. She sat in the middle and looked over at Andrew. The last thing she remembered seeing was the fear and helplessness in his face. When she came to, everything around her started to become clear. It wasn't her first rodeo. That, plus she’s always had a special kind of bad luck, so it didn't surprise her when they finally realized they were in an accident.
Her body was numb and she didn't know where she was, let alone know what had just happened. She was pinned against a tree hanging out of the truck window with glass covering her arms and hands. She tried to pull out but the truck door grasped her ankle tight and wouldn't allow her to move. Her hand was smashed in the glove compartment. Andrew came around to her from the other side of the truck, helplessly asking over and over if there was anything he could do to help. She called Andrew over and told him to get her hand out of the glove compartment. He pulled the whole thing out because it was jammed into the dash. Once her finger was released, she saw that it was crooked and purple, but that was the least of her worries. She put her arms around his neck and tried to pull herself out of the truck once again. It didn't work so she waited for help patiently. She looked down and saw all the glass surrounding her arms and all the rips in her clothes.
She thought about how thankful she was that Courtney wasn't with her. Her dad was on his way home from the farm. He was about a mile behind them and when he drove by, Courtney was in the back seat and told dad to stop over and over, freaking out. He slammed on the breaks and got out. As soon as he got to them, he started yelling at Andrew. She told him to stop, that there’s more important things they needed to handle right then. He called her mom and the cops. After all was said and done she was in the hospital explaining to her parents everything she could remember.
With both of them having no major injuries, they were able to leave the hospital. They met outside the hospital doors on their way out and while their parents were talking about what had happened, Andrew bent down and kissed her on her forehead. She looked at him and he stood up slowly, saying, “I’m so sorry.” She started to cry because they both knew they weren't going to work after all of this had happened. She was scared. As he walked away with his mom he said, “I love you,” just loud enough for her to hear it from him for the first time.
