The Spiritual Battle
Born 1980, F, from Gilroy, CA, United StatesAn epic war was waging. Angels, humans and demons fought to their deaths covering the earth as far as the eye could see. I was in the middle of this dark battle. Dressed in armor of the gladiators of old, I wielded a sword and stabbed, hacked and turned demons into dust, thus sending them back to the hell they belonged to and came from.
I watched myself battle and fight like it was bred in me. I showed no fear and I courageously and dutifully fought on, watching as angels beside me killed the same demons I was after. I know I am not an angel. But the strength inside and the fight of one came through though. I’ve never fought this way before. I’ve had no such training to kill the impish, snarling demons that looked half human and almost half egyptian god, but yet, I was there.
Swords clashed, arrows flew through the air, axes and spears maimed and killed the wicked, humans and angels alike. Through the snarls and teeth like piranhas, demons spouted and gnashed their words like barbs to their annihilators, trying to scare and belittle the courage of those who were fighting against them. The angels were silent and fought without words. Their only way of speaking was with the actions of their swords and rendering the demons to dust.
Us humans could not contain our anger and traded our barbed words with the demons, like throwing daggers into the air hoping our words of promising them that they would all go back to exactly where they belonged would hurt just like our mighty swords. We didn’t back down. We knew the mighty light that lit the sky above us was what gave us our strength and would give us our victory. We were greatly outnumbered.
More and more angles flew down to help us fight. Their mighty white wings glimmering in the light of his presence. Not all angels can fly but the ones that did created much of the ash that covered the ground in the great slaughter and fight that continued. So much ash surrounded us and even covered our feet that a mighty wind from the north blew away the soot leaving us room to march on.
As time passed by and more demons and humans were being killed, I looked to my left and saw one of the biggest demons on the fighting lines. I don’t know his name and I don’t know why I despised him so, but when our eyes met it was imperative that this demon die by my hand... if it was the last thing that I ever did.
We slowly walked to each other and stopped, facing each other, waiting for the other one to make the first move. He branded his teeth and spoke to me in a language that in other than my sleep I do not know. It was then that I spoke and told him,
“Let’s finish this!”
Our swords clashed and sparks flew. We fought around this great oak tree in the middle of the battle field. Our swords missing and just grazing each other as we swung our weapons in the air.
I can’t remember exactly what he said, but he egged me on. Daring me to end his life and to be free of him.
Using my shield to protect myself and using all the strength I had left in my body, I knocked his sword out of his hand and kicked him to the ground, his body laying half on the ground and half up against the tree.
He pursued me again with his words... taunting me and telling me to stab him and put an end to my hate.
I raised my sword and told the imp, “Go back to hell!” and started to yell, ready and aiming for his heartless chest. Ready and willing to return his impish, decrepit and sinewy body back to hell where he came from.
As my sword came down, a mighty angel put his sword inbetween me and the helpless demon laying there. This angel was mighty and glowed so brightly, all I could see was the bottom of his armor around his waist and the sandals on his feet.
“You cannot kill him,” the angels booming voice replied.
I looked up in shock as far as I could and out of the corner of my eye two angels from my left came and grabbed the demon that I had almost slain.
“He is wanted by The Most High, you cannot kill him.”
The demon snarled at me and chuckled. His teeth gleaming and rotting as his crooked nose just sneered at me while the two angels dragged him away. His lower body dragging on the ground.
The mighty angel that was once by my side, flew away and I stood there, confused, angry and frustrated all at once.
“I’m going to get him” was all that I could think as I looked around, seeing the battle around me wage on.
I was so tired that I just stood there watching and wondering, when is this battle ever going to end?
It was then that I opened my eyes and laid there in the darkness surrounding my bed. My husband sleeping soundly and not hearing the battle cries that reminded me of watching the last battle over Middle Earth in the Lord of the Rings. Even awake, I felt the sting of not being able to slay the demon that egged me on and challenged me to end his life.
To this day, after many years, I don’t know what the dream meant, who the demon was and why in the world was I fighting along side angels?
God only knows.
