Three times the laughter
Born 1980, F, from Gilroy, CA, United StatesThis June 28th marks the 6th anniversary of a dear friend of mines death. His name was Joel and he was my best friend. Some people couldn’t get over the fact that he was male and I was female and we never had “feelings” for each other. We were simply platonic friends who cared for each other deeply with a strong friendship. In some ways I thought of him as the brother that I never had. For some reason, I’ve always gotten along better and even dated guys that were older then me. When it came to guys my own age, even friendships were hard to come by. Heck! I even married a man three years older than me. Three years isn’t a big difference but it just shows in my life, that this friend of mine who was my age was very special. In fact, he was very special to a lot of people.
Thinking of things to write, I asked some friends of mine on Facebook what I could write about. My dear friend Hillary said that I should write a story behind some of the photographs that I have taken. I thought of a story for one of the photographs; then, I started thinking about Hillary. I miss my dear friend who left California to live with her family in Tennessee. Since it is summer and the air is still warm, even in the evening, it reminded me of a night regarding, Hillary, my dear friend Joel and me.
I don’t remember what month it was or the day, though Hillary, Joel and I made plans to hang out one evening. We didn’t know what we were going to do but, just hanging with your friends and doing, “nothing” was a whole lot better then doing “nothing” all by yourself.
Hillary and I were sitting in my parents kitchen when Hillary’s cell phone rang. It was Joel. Joel told her that some friends of his stopped by and that since he, Hillary and I were all going to the beach the following day, he was going to hang with his other friends.
WHAT?!? We couldn’t believe this. He was blowing us off to hang out with them?!? OH! The audacity of him.
Hillary, jokingly set him a text saying, “YOU SUCK!” while I sat at the kitchen table wondering what we were going to do. We couldn’t force him to hang out with us. Hillary and I didn’t want to be around the people he was hanging out with (long story). What were we to do?
Being a little stung by our friends last minute decision, we decided to play a little prank on our “dear friend”. But what? What could we do? Then… it hit me.
“I know!” I declared.
“Let’s go get those window markers and write all over his car windows.” I said.
Hillary laughed and agreed to go with me and buy some window markers that we could write on his car windows with.
We drove around town going to different stores looking for the markers but we couldn’t find any. Then finally we decided to go to the store that has everything you’re looking for in one stop… Walmart.
We bought one white marker and one yellow marker and drove to the street where Joel lived.
I parked my green GMC Jimmy down the street from his house and Hillary and I got out and crept slowly over to his car parked out front of his house.
We looked at each other and were like, “What should we write?”
I started first as I walked to the back of his car and wrote on the back windshield, “Honk if U R Horny!”
Hillary laughed and decided to write on his widows “For a good time call 1-800-spank-me.”
We laughed and giggled and wrote, “I LOVE YOU” on his front windshield as fast as we could and hoping we didn’t get caught.
After we were done we ran back to my car and hopped in and drove back to my house laughing the whole way there and wondering what Joel was going to do when he saw the “naughty” messages we left on his car.
The next day, Hillary, my sister Cynthia and I headed over to Joel’s house to pick him up to go to the beach. We turned onto his street and saw his car. There were no writings on his windows. Obviously someone cleaned the car. We wondered what he thought when he saw his car the night before but Hillary and I decided that this was our little secret. He would never know that it was us that wrote on his car.
We picked up Joel and drove to the beach. The entire way there Joel never mentioned his car. Hillary and I were wondering, “Did he even see it?” We weren’t going to say anything so we both just kept our mouths shut.
While at the beach, one of Joel’s friends that he hung out with the night before called his phone. Listening to him, I heard Joel say, “No, I haven’t. I haven’t even thought about it actually.”
Shortly, Joel hung up his phone and looked at Hillary and I and asked, “Did you guys write all over my car windows last night?”
“Why would we do that?” Hillary asked.
“What?!? Someone wrote on your car windows?!?” I asked him.
“Yeah! It was really funny. My friends were leaving last night and when we opened the front door, we saw someone wrote all over my car windows. It was great. My mom and I thought it was so funny. I took pictures of it.”
There Joel handed me his digital camera where Hillary and I looked at the pictures and admired our handy work.
His friends from the night before thought that Hillary and I did it and well… they were right. However, Joel didn’t need to know that.
We pulled a little prank on our friend. And in the end, he laughed about it.
We laughed. He laughed. And though he never did find out that it was Hillary and I who wrote on his car windows, I will always remember the night that three friends laughed about the same thing but for two different reasons.
The three of us were true friends.
