a magic clock
Born 1995, M, from Mbale, UgandaThe magic clock
It was a quiet evening; save the howling of the wolves; and the whistling of the leaves. The moonlight through the small window to my room cast big spooky shadows. I was terrified, and pulled the blanket over my face, as if that was not enough, something began to tick.
What is that? I thought to myself. Could it be a ghost. I shrugged at this thought.
I was startled by a knock at the door. My heart was now beating real fast, it was as if anytime it would jump out of my chest.
"George! Open, it is me". A voice whispered, which it was none other than that of pernila, my elder sister.
boy I was relieved. Not to think it was a ghost out to get me.
"are you awake?" She asked, still In a whisper.
"yeah I am". I replied, in a whisper and quite feebly.
She turned the knob, letting herself in, she hastened and sat next to me.
"have you notticed there was a ticking" she inquired, "it was like an old granfather clock".
"I thought the ticking was in my head". I rubbed my chin. Perplexed.
Something shocking happened, the ticking was back again only stronger this time.
"it's ticking again". She whispered.
"I have noticed that". I stammered.
"it's coming from granpa's bedroom". Pernila guessed. "Let's go check it out".
"I dont think......."
"come on". Pernila reached for my hand, and beamed her flashlight, since the power had gone off after dinner, and apperently had'nt returned.
She led downstairs, to grandpa's bedroom, I wondered how she could be as courageous.
"I wish mom and dad were here". I mumbled.
Mom and dad had left for a one week trip to scotland, and had left pernila in charge.
"Quiet". Pernila muttered.
she opened the door, and illuminated the room. Granpa's portrait was still hanging at the wall. Just as he left it before dieing of stroke, in the very room. An icy senaation ran down my spine.
The ticking came from the old wadrobe he had brought from england. With firmness, pernila thrust the door open. The ticking seemed to be from under a pile of clothes.
pernila moved them aside, and beneath lied an older golden clock.
"my god". I muttered, my mouth agape.
"Lets check it out". Said pernila. She lifted it and put it on the bed for scrutiny.
"I say this clock has been quiet for quite some time, why wake now?". She muttered.
"do you suppose it's granpa's....".
Pernila interrupted. Cause she knew where I was getting.
"We talked about this! ghosts don't exist, so don't even think about bringing that topic up". She sputtered. She then got back to scrutinizing the clock, as I mumbled words of discontent.
"it has an inscription behind". Said pernila.
"What does it say?" I asked, enthuastically.
"It says that whoever turns the red thing up here" she touched a kind of switch, "will see the wonders of the world". She completed reading the inscription.
"I definately wouldn't want to find out what it means". I said, "I am going back to bed".
Before I could stand on my feet from the kneeling, pernila turned the switch and 'swash' everything turned a blur, our heads spun round and round, then everything was still.
I was out for a while, and on opening my eyes, we were in a thick evergreen forest. Pernilla was still out.
"Pernilla wake up". I shook her up.
"What is this place". Pernila asked, perplexed.
Shortly, men dressed in metal armour and on horses rounded us up.
"Oh! what do we have here?" One of the men said in a deep hoarse voice.
