The Raven
Born 1954, M, from Southampton, United KingdomDad says we're the future.
What does he mean ?
We'll be alive and he says he'll be gone.
Gone where ?
Dead I suppose.
Does that matter ?
It seems it does. It matters to dad.
Did he have a future like us ?
Oh yes, but it's gone or going.
You mean this is it; but it's the same as normal. Isn't ours going to be different ?
I don't think so.
Then what's so good about it ?
I don't know.
How did your dad feel when he was young ?
He said he felt excited, but life turned out dull.
I hope ours won't be dull. We'll make it exciting.
How ?
Start a war.
Don't be daft, we'll be shot.
We might not be.
Dad says the war was terrible.
It won't be like school, that's for sure.
What about rations, soldiers have rations. That'll be different from school dinners.
Yep, special stuff like meatballs and gunpowder and pudding so heavy you can't move afterward.
If we can't move we won't make very good soldiers.
We'll be sentries then, they just stand still.
Dad says he wishes his life was different. He said to me, "change it while you're still young."
How do we change it then ? You see a war is the easiest way.
Would there be much killing ?
Why are we counting. Your dad's told you what to do. You don't want to end up with regrets like him.
I've decided.
As the silo door opened a raven flew from the roof of a ramshackle house where the president had spent his childhood. It did not understand what followed.
