"What would you like to do for your 10th birthday?" Leonardo's mom had asked him.
"Laser tag!!" he had immediately shouted. But after a couple of calls, his mother looked at him sadly and admitted that they didn't have enough money to go there. Leonardo tried to sound believable when he said, "That's okay. We can go somewhere else." He didn't want his mom to feel bad after all that she did for him. Not to mention that his dad had already promised to buy him a laptop for his birthday to help with homework.
'That will cost him a whole month's worth of work!' Leonardo thought to himself.
Finally, it was decided that his birthday party would be held at Cheese E. Fun, his least favorite choice, but at least he could invite his friends from school and his soccer team.
Now Leonardo slowly opened the door to Cheese E. Fun, and loud music, buzzes, and yelling surrounded him. Kids raced around colorful, flashing video games with Cheese E. Fun soda in their hands, but he didn't see any of his friends.
"Where is Joel?" Leonardo asked his mother.
"His mother just called. Joel está enfermo," she replied in English and Spanish. She usually used both languages to talk to Leonardo and his sister, but he understood that Joel was sick...and not coming.
Leonardo looked at his shoes, and his long curly brown hair fell in his face. Not only was he going to have his party HERE, but his best friend wasn't coming.
'This is going to be the worst birthday EVER,' Leonardo thought to himself and shuffled behind his mom and sister.
When Leonardo looked up, he spotted Metal Storm squeezed between Mario Cart and the ski ball games. "Hey! I thought that was only an online game!" he shouted above the beeps and buzzes around him. "Can I have some quarters to play?"
"Sure," Mrs. Garcia replied, dumping a handful of coins in Leonardo's cupped hands. "I'll go set up the decorations."
Leonardo strode over to the familiar jet whoooshes and colorful military designs of his favorite game and quickly became lost in air force battles for the next 20 minutes.
"Would Leonardo's party please come to table 12?" an announcement blared. "It's time to sing Happy Birthday!"
Leonardo groaned and shuffled toward table 12. He hated being the center of attention after he farted during Show & Tell in second grade. Everyone had laughed at him then, and his cheeks started to redden just thinking about it.
At table 12, familiar smiles from his soccer team and family greeted him. They began to sing "Happy Birthday" mostly in unison, except for Ryan who kept yelling "Cha cha cha!" at the top of his lungs and Lily who kept making wild arm gestures to emphasize the word "you".
Suddenly his mom and sister appeared holding the most brilliantly lit cake that he had ever seen. The 10 candles sparkled like firecrackers and changed color as they neared Leonardo.
"Make a wish!" his sister Mia whispered into his ear, and he did.
Ryan, Eric, Gerardo, and the rest of the soccer team all dove into the cake like ravenous wolves as the pizza also arrived. Michael and Gerardo were competing to see who could eat the most pepperoni, and Eric made silly "knock-knock" jokes that made everyone groan and laugh at the same time.
"What do ghosts eat with their cereal?" was his latest one, and everyone, including Leonardo, froze mid-munch to shout, "Boo-berries!"
Despite his fears, Leonardo was actually having a great time, and his fingers twitched to reach for the brightly colored packages sitting just out of reach. Music bounced and lights from a multiplayer racing game flashed near their table. His wish might actually come true. He was having the best birthday yet.
