The Sunken Ship
Born 1955, M, from Norwich NY, United StatesThe Sunken Ship
Bobby and I were diving in the Florida Keys one day, looking for sunken treasure. As we glided along a beautiful coral reef, the colors were amazing. Every once in a while we would come across a starfish or a horseshoe crab. A wide array of tropical fish swam in schools around us, making us feel like we were in the fish tank at the dentist office.
We came to the end of the reef to a steep drop off. I glanced over at Bobby, as the bubbles floated up from her mask. She turned on her underwater flashlight and motioned for me to follow her into the darkness. We swam down, down, down. I saw two stingrays pass through her light beam. I was a little worried about sharks.
We made our way along the sandy ocean floor. It was not totally dark and you could see shadows of rocks and plants here and there. It was then we came across the sunken ship. Sure enough there were sharks of all sizes swimming all around. We took our time, going from rock to rock hiding from the mighty sharks.
When the time was right, we made a dash for the hole in the belly of the ship. Once inside, Bobby flashed her light around. There were barrels of gun powder and cannon balls. Skulls and bones of pirates and misfits. It was everything we could have imagined that would be there.
We worked our way through the hull of the ship and finally found the stairs to the captains quarters. There was gold everywhere!
Bobby and I worked hard together to open a chest. As we pried on the lock a few bubbles came out. Then Bang! Out came a giant sea serpent! I motioned for Bobby to go as I pulled the knife from my sheath. The serpent viciously wrestled with me, as I worked my way out of the ship. Its teeth were ferocious and it started wrapping its body around my leg. The fight seemed to last forever, although it probably was only for a few minutes. The serpent was so fierce that the sharks even left. I fought hard with all I had and stabbed the knife deep into the belly of the serpent. I was so exhausted and floated to the surface.
The next thing I remember is having a glass of water thrown in my face! Yes! Apparently I had been sound asleep, dreaming in the hammock.
“Do you want to go scuba diving with me?” asked Bobby.
“No Way!” I replied.
