“Sheriff, the jewel thief has struck again. This time in a town called Cristville.”
“Ah, that is not too far from here. Constable Nathan, let’s head down there.”
In Cristville, there is a huge crowd gathered around the jewellery store, curious to see the investigation taking place there. The Sheriff calls out to his officers to check and dust everywhere for clues. “Let’s hope we find something, all the other towns we have found no evidence so far.” Some officers tend to their clue finding roles, while others interview the witnesses who were at the scene when the crime was happening. The same thing is said from the witnesses, that the thief was a man dressed in a hoodie with a tracksuit and a dark black cloth covering his face.
The investigation lasted to about four hours by the time the whole jewellery store had been dusted and checked for any clues. The officer’s report to the Sheriff was again inconclusive. It is if the thief was never there and the crime never happened. The Sheriff sighed as he spoke, “ok everyone pack up. There is nothing else to do here.”
In the Sheriff’s office, Constable Nathan said, “what do we do now? Wait for another jewel heist?”
“Looking at the lack of evidence and there being no information about the thief from the witnesses, we have to close this case down. It seems very unlikely that we will ever catch this guy.”
“Maybe you are right. I just…” Constable Nathan pauses as he collects his thoughts.
“You just what constable?”
“I just think this time is different. One of the witnesses, the shop owner in fact, was not entirely telling the truth. I did not pick up on it whilst I was talking to him, but now that I think about it, he showed signs of misleading me.” Nothing else needed to be said, as the Constable and the Sheriff headed back to the store.
“I am sorry to disturb you again, Mr Johnson.”
“That is quite alright, how can I help?”
“Well now….” Constable Nathan explained how in each town the thief left no traces behind and all of the witness’ statements were similar. “However, I sensed that you were hiding something. Is there anything at all that you are not telling us?” Mr Johnson’s expression turned fearful whilst he said nothing. “Look here Mr Johnson, I am the Sheriff and I want to catch this guy. If you have ideas on who he may be then please tell us. Goodbye.” The Sheriff and the Constable begin to walk out of the store when the shop owner shouts, “wait!” He tells them that the jewel thief is his younger brother and goes by the name Kyle. “Kyle stays in an apartment at this address,” he hands the Sheriff a piece of paper, “he just wanted to become the best jewel thief ever and keep the rewards.”
The Sheriff nods as he calls for more officers to head to the address on the paper. They find Kyle sleeping in his room with all the jewels around him. He does not fight the officers as they arrest him and take him away. “Well Sheriff, case closed then.”
“Yes, case closed.”
