The Elevator
Born 1995, M, from Kentucky, United StatesThe Elevator
By Joseph Logsdon
Audrey Jackson wanted to make love to Walter Paterson. Throughout Audrey’s life, she had admired handsome and strong men. She was popular, sophisticated, and dangerous. Audrey always got what she wanted. Despite his sexual appetite, Walter always managed to resist Audrey. Walter Paterson was a successful man, but his success did not prevent his wife from leaving him. At first, Walter felt guilty for ignoring his duty as a father. As time passed, Walter realized that he was not a family man. He wanted power, wealth, and fame. However, Walter would never achieve his goal without the assistance of Audrey Jackson.
Walter had been working as a journalist for many years. Despite his success, Walter remained a little man. He had great potential, but his income did not represent his worth as a journalist. However, Walter Paterson was about to receive the chance of a lifetime. The sun was beginning to go down as Walter walked inside the elevator. To Walter’s surprise, Audrey was standing beside him. Like Walter, Audrey was a journalist. Her brown eyes pierced Walter’s heart as the elevator door closed.
“What do you want, Audrey?” Walter asked.
“I hear that your wife has filed for divorce,” she said.
“My personal life does not concern you,” he replied.
“Why not?”
“Only someone like you would ask a question like that,” he stated.
“What are you talking about?”
“Unlike you, I’m a respectable person. How many divorces have you been through?”
“Four, possibly five. Why is that important to you?” she asked.
“Which is it, four or five?”
“I’m pretty sure I’ve been divorced four times,” she answered.
“This is going to be my first divorce. I don’t want to have another divorce, understand?”
“What are you talking about?” she asked.
“Audrey, don’t play dumb with me, especially when we’re alone. You’ve been pursuing me ever since I became a journalist.”
“Where’s your proof?” she laughed.
“I’m tired of playing games,” he replied.
“Me too, Walter. Don’t you want to know why I came to see you today?”
“Not particularly,” he replied.
“I have something to show you,” Audrey stated.
“What could you possibly show me?”
“Do you promise not to tell anyone?”
“Sure, why not?” Walter said in a sarcastic voice.
“Walter, I’m being serious,” she replied.
“What do you have to show me?” Walter finally asked in a serious voice.
Suddenly and without warning, Audrey removed a photo from her pocket.
“What’s that?” Walter asked.
“It’s a photo of the mayor,” she stated.
“Yeah, so what?”
“You don’t get it, do you?”
“Get what?”
“It’s a photo of the mayor having sex with a male prostitute. What do you have to say about that?”
“Where did you get that?”
“That’s my little secret. Walter, would you like to expose him with me?” she asked.
“I don’t know if that’s such a good idea,” he replied.
“What do you mean?”
“We would be ruining a man’s life. Do you really want to do that?”
“Walter, this story could help your career. You want that, don’t you?”
“Of course I do,” he replied.
“Then help me write this story!” Audrey exclaimed.
“What do you want?” Walter asked.
“What do you mean?”
“You’re not going to help me for free, Audrey. What do you want?”
In that moment, Walter realized what he would have to do. Suddenly and without warning, Audrey kissed Walter. At first, he tried to resist. As time passed, Walter decided to return Audrey’s love. Walter knew that Audrey was corrupt, but he didn’t care. Like two lovers, their lips parted and came together again. For the first time, Walter Paterson felt alive.
“Did you ever think it could be like this?” Audrey asked.
“No,” Walter replied.
“Why have we been fighting all this time?” Audrey asked.
“Because we’re just two kids looking for meaning in this crazy world,” he answered.
“I hope we don’t grow up too fast,” Audrey replied.
“We won’t, not if we never let go of this moment.”
“Walter, can I tell you a story?”
“Of course,” he answered.
“When I was a girl, men seemed hateful and damaged. As I grew older, I realized that men and women have the same problems. Women are expected to stay home and look after the kids, but men are expected to work and support their family. I think it’s odd that people can’t be people. Why are men and women different? I asked that same question when I decided to become a journalist. I wanted to show men that women could also work in their industry. In many ways, it’s sad that men are still expected to do all the work. Women can do so much for this world, especially when it comes to making money. Do you know what I mean, Walter?”
“I know what you mean, at least I think I do. I never knew that you could think so deeply, Audrey,” Walter stated.
“Sometimes, stupid women can say very smart things,” Audrey laughed.
“Audrey, you could never be labeled as stupid,” he replied.
Walter kissed Audrey again. After several seconds, the elevator door opened.
“So, are we going to be partners?” Audrey asked.
“Only if you stay divorced,” Walter replied.
“I think we’re going to have a wonderful time,” she stated.
