Maintenance of a Rose
Born 1941, M, from Harvest, AL., United StatesMaintenance of a Rose
By
Carl Brooks
When you come upon a rose,
“Smell it now,” I say.
Lest its petals fade and close,
And its fragrance goes away.
Fear not the prick of thorny sheath,
Its pain won't last the day.
Embrace it whole: the thorn, the leaf.
Do it now, I pray.
Drink from dampened petal's dew,
Breathe in deep with sigh and tear.
Its treasures will not wait for you,
Act now, or lose, I fear.
Marvel its soft, sweet blush,
And whisper how you feel.
You say, "There is no urgent rush,
No need to be genteel?"
What if someone tempts with prose,
Then takes it far away.
When you come upon a rose,
“Smell it now,” I say.
