The day I flew in air
Born 1993, F, from Nagercoil/Tamil Nadu, IndiaTHE DAY I FLEW IN AIR
“Ann, How long have I been searching for you?” said Jancy.
Still my wet eyes were peeping out through the large glass pane window unconsciously lost in deep thoughts.
I am studying in a Boarding School in South India. My parents, due to their living, have settled in North India. Every weekend we have Visitors Day- the precious day on which parents come to see their loved ones with essence of love filled with warm hugs and kisses. To my disappointment, there are no visitors for me often.
I am living in second floor in our Boarding Hostel. On every Visitors day, I used to go to the common hall which has large glass pane window. Near to the window there was a sitting bench with desk, which we use during regular study hours. The sitting desk near the window is my favorite place to sit. The view to see from the window is very beautiful. Sky is blue, trees are green and birds chirruping are heard during early hours of day. The main entrance of our Boarding School can be well monitored. There is a large playground in which always boys are engaged in playing cricket giving us the feel of watching a live cricket match. One can get a glimpse of boy’s hostel, our school infrastructure and way to our dining hall. There is a big swimming pool in which children spend most of their hours. There are a lot of sitting benches made for the visitors which is too hard to be empty. Anyone can sit in my favorite place and take a view of our boarding for hours together.
Whole boarding is busy on that day. You can hear lots of noises and whispers all around. But there is a soul who has no visitors on those precious days and that is I, Ann. I as usual occupy my favorite spot and spend my time hours together watching every view carefully. Sometimes I lose my consciousness and doze off there and sometimes I get trance. This is my usual routine. So I got used to the situation. However the sweet memory of my family is devouring me and I miss them so badly. Though they are not near to me all time, their absence is felt by me every day. My family misses only me, but I miss them all. I have often dreamt of my parents coming and spending time with me under the big banyan tree on the seating bench for the visitors. I missed the small fights with my siblings, all the freedom that I used to enjoy. My desires and yearnings started to grow day by day.
All my friends have visitors except me. I am allowed to speak with my parents only once in a week, i.e. on Thursday. Every day my eyes are fixed on calendar hoping to see if already Thursday has arrived. My joy knows no limit on that day. My friends have introduced me to their family member who comes to see them. Most of them felt sorry for me. Tears used to flood my eyes. I take great pain to control my emotions. Sitting alone in my room with tears, I used to think and pray that my family should also come and spend their quality time with me on visitor’s day. Like the rest of children, I too wanted to go on outing and have many imaginations, dreams and planning to spend that special day- visitor’s day.
Jancy shakes my hand vigorously and says…
“Come to your senses Ann. Get up and get ready real quick. Your parents are waiting downstairs.”
I came to consciousness and asked Jancy ”Are you serious?”
She replied, “Yeah! I swear.”
I got puzzled and wondered what should I do? Tears started rolling down my cheeks. All my shattered expectations and dreams started to take a stand.
Again I can hear someone calling my name from downstairs. The name of the student who has visitors on that day is called from downstairs. I too wanted to hear it someday and I heard it at last.
I ran to my room explaining to every one that my parents are waiting downstairs. I dressed myself in a pink dress which I liked a lot. Got ready in no time and ran down in excitement. I saw my whole family- father, mother, brother and sister from a distance. When I reached them I hugged them and started crying. The controlled emotions started to burst out. They consoled me and tears started to dry up as happiness started to take a lead.
At last I have visitors to see me and the day is waiting to give me a lot of surprises. Like a little child I started introducing my family to my friends, warden and teachers. I took them to the same banyan tree and sitting bench which I have often dreamt about. I am made to sit in the middle and the rest sat around me. This is the moment I have been waiting for. I feel delighted, glad and cheerful. I had a sense of flying in the air. I am in cloud nine. I started doing everything that I have already dreamt about the visitor’s day. I pinched the chubby cheeks of my sister and played the funny games we used to play in home. I started passing pranks on my brother and enjoyed the small fights with him. I laid down in my mother's lap for hours and wanted her to feed me. I asked my father to take me on a ride to a beautiful lakeside.
I took them to all places I wanted to go with them. We went to a movie, ice-cream parlor, restaurant, pizza cottage, family park and shopping complex. I asked them to buy for me everything I wanted. I felt so excited to fight for the same dress with my sister in shop.
Time is fleeting and the day came to an end. But my heart longed to be with my family forever.
All my wish and dreams came true on that day. I enjoyed the whole day. It has left an inerasable scar in my memory and still remains fresh as movie in my mind. Even to this day the big banyan tree reminds me of the happy moments spent with my family.
Again my routine work of sitting in my favorite place near the window started. Hoping to see another happy visitors day soon.
