Revco and the Atari 2600
Born 1971, M, from Tennessee, United StatesWhen I was a boy, I hated Revco. But from 1983-1985, the Revco Stores became my favorite stores in Morristown, Tennessee. The reason was because they started selling Atari 2600 games for $5 and $5.50 each. Most stores charged around $30 per Atari 2600 game. I must thank my good friend Tim McCravey. He was the one who told me and my brother that Revco was selling games that cheap.
At first Revco only sold games that were made by M-Network and Vidtec/U.S. Dark Cavern and Space Jockey were my favorite M-Network and Vidtec/U.S. games. They soon also started selling Atari games that were made by Coleco but they charged higher for them. Revco charged $10 per Coleco game.
About six to twelve months later Revco also started selling Atari and Activision games for the Atari 2600. They also started selling some games for the Intellivision. But I didn't have an Intellivision so I bought none of those games.
Revco actually started selling games cheaper. I bought some games for only $2 and I bought one or two games that only cost 50 cents. One of the games that I bought for 50 cents was E.T. It's not surprising that it was sold for only 50 cents. When I told a friend that I paid $2 for Real Sports Baseball, he got pissed. He bought the same game at another store for $30.
Sadly, the Revco stores were bought out by CVS. I don't know if every Revco in existence were bought out but the ones in Morristown were. The Revco stores were great and from 1983-1985, I have fond memories of buying video games there.
