Rea – Chapter 1
Meeting Lan
At this point, Rea was really starting to hate barnacles. Oh, and also deformed teddy bears. She kept running, but of course they followed her around everywhere she went. It was like she had a magical –Ahem, magnetic—force around her that constantly tormented her with beady bear eyes and decapitated panda heads. But then again, Rea had worse before in her life. Like that one incident where she met her father… no, she couldn’t think about that now. She was deep in thought, forgetting all things around her.
“Hey, barnacle-girl! Earth to Rea, Earth to Rea,” said an exasperated but familiar voice.
Rea jolted back to reality, and quickly wiped the tears from her eyes, which she had not noticed was there. She looked around, just to check if she was still in the real world. Same ship, same pile of barrels, and definitely same voice. She looked behind her, where Ribbon, her faithful robot and best friend, was leaning towards her and tapping her on the shoulder, grinning. Ribbon’s lacey bow fell off of her head as she continued to wake Rea up, and laid there unnoticed.
“What were you spacing out for? Thinking of your boyfriend?” Ribbon teased, her grin expanding.
“Shut up! Stop calling me barnacle-girl, and for your information, Lan isn’t my boyfriend!” Rea replied sharply, but she could feel herself turning red.
“So you were thinking about him? His wavy hair, dreamy eyes,” Ribbon made a kissy face and pretended to swoon.
“No! I was thinking of… something else. And anyways, why aren’t you doing your share of chores?”
Ribbon shrugged, and then winced, massaging her shoulder. Rea could relate. A few days ago, on their little “adventure”, they were forced to hike up a huge hill, which wasn’t a breeze. The hill had lots of rocks, and sharp, thorny, bushes along the way to the top, and by the end of their training, she and Ribbon had bruises and scratches all over. Ribbon complaining the whole time about tearing her dress didn’t make it any easier.
“Okay, let’s sail to the nearest village. Where is that?” Rea asked.
“How would I know? You’re the expert on reading maps. I’m just your faithful sidekick that does pretty much all the work for you,” replied Ribbon with a hint of amusement.
“All the work?”
“Yep. Chores, fighting, gamb—ahem, earning money, you know, and stuff like that.”
Rea snorted, then said,” I never asked for money. You came up with that idea on your own. Keep me out of your fantasies.”
Ribbon grinned, not answering, while she studied the map. The island they were currently on kind of looked like a panda and the peninsula next to it was a crane, with its long neck and thin beak. Rea looked at the map some more, then decided to go to the crane. She pointed at it.
“We’re going there, so get prepared. There might be bandits and swindlers out there waiting for us, so get weapons too. Got it?”
Ribbon saluted like a soldier and marched off to raise the sails. Once she was gone, Rea sank deeper into the chair she was sitting on and sighed. She thought about her little daydream a while ago. What was that? It was like a flashback of her past, which was something she didn’t want to be reminded of. She was sinking into her thoughts rapidly, but the sound of the alarm snapped her out of it. Rea immediately got up and sprinted out of the hull, her heart racing.
“What’s going on?” she demanded.
Ribbon was standing on the platoon with the alarm bell, trying to stop it from ringing, but she managed an embarrassed smile and said,” Sorry! I accidentally activated the bell.”
Rea sighed, slightly annoyed. Ribbon somehow got the bell to stop ringing. Rea turned to go back, when suddenly the boat lurched forward, knocking her off her feet. The alarm immediately started ringing again, which startled Ribbon, who tumbled off the platoon and landed somewhat safely near a bunch of barrels.
“What was that, for heaven’s sake?” Rea repeated.
“I think that was me, for heaven’s sake,” mimicked a voice behind her.
Rea twisted her body to see who it was. When she did, she immediately stumbled to her feet and bowed, flustered. She stayed in that position, until she felt a hand pat her head.
“Now, now, don’t be so formal,” Lan said, smiling.
