The Devil’s Daughter
Born 1995, M, from Kentucky, United StatesThe Devil’s Daughter
By Joseph Logsdon
Patrick Garfield was a very lonely man. As a boy, Patrick was bullied and neglected. Unlike most people, Patrick was very delicate and fragile. After many years of pain and heartbreak, Patrick Garfield left his hometown and married a young waitress. Like Patrick, Glenda Peterson wanted a better life, a life that would provide security and stability. Despite his fragile nature, Patrick became a strong and intelligent lawyer. For the first time in his life, Patrick Garfield had something of his own, something that couldn’t be taken away.
One afternoon, Patrick’s sister came to visit him and his wife. As a child, Patrick’s sister was the only person that truly understood him. Because of their close relationship, Glenda was not only jealous, she was envious and resentful. As the day came to a close, Patrick decided to tell his wife about his secret business trip.
“Honey, can I speak to you for a second?” Patrick asked.
“What is it?”
“Do you resent my sister?”
“Patrick, why do you ask?”
“I normally wouldn’t, but I need to know.”
“I love her, you know that.”
“Good,” Patrick replied.
“Why do you ask?”
“I’m placing her in your custody.”
“What do you mean?”
“I’ll be gone for the next few days.”
“Why?”
“I have to attend a meeting in San Francisco.”
“Why didn’t you tell me this before?”
“Don’t worry, I’ll be back on Saturday.”
“Take me with you!”
“I was planning on it, but I didn’t expect my sister to visit us so early.”
“She’s 12, she can take care of herself.”
“She’s a strong girl, but she still needs supervision and guidance.”
“If you leave me with her, I’ll go insane.”
“You can do it, I know you can.”
“Why does she always come between us?”
“What are you talking about?”
“You love her more than me, admit it!”
“That’s ridiculous!”
“If you truly love me, take me with you!”
“I’m sorry, I can’t do that.”
“Patrick, I’m begging you!”
“You resent her, admit it!” Patrick shouted.
“I don’t resent her, I resent you!”
“What do you mean?”
“You never pay attention to me.”
“I don’t have time for this,” Patrick stated as he headed towards the door.
“Go ahead, leave me behind!”
“I’m not leaving you, I’m leaving the monster that you’ve become.”
“What are you talking about?”
“I thought you were a good woman, I guess I was wrong.”
Without further hesitation, Patrick left the house, leaving Glenda to care for his beloved sister. Within days of his departure, Patrick received an unexpected phone call from his wife.
“What’s wrong, Glenda?” Patrick asked.
“Honey, come home!”
“What’s wrong?”
“She’s dead,” Glenda whimpered.
“Who’s dead?”
“Your sister.”
“That’s not possible,” Patrick stuttered.
“If you care about her, come home!”
“How did it happen?”
“Don’t make me say it.”
“Tell me!” Patrick shouted.
“She cut her wrists.”
“That’s impossible!”
“I’m sorry, I really am.”
“It can’t be true, it just can’t be true.”
“Come home,” she pleaded.
Patrick grieved over his sister’s death for many years. Like most brothers, Patrick didn’t want to believe that his sister had taken her own life, but he had to accept the facts. One drizzly night, Glenda approached her beloved husband.
“Patrick, I need to talk to you.”
“What’s wrong?”
“Your mother called,” she answered.
“Yeah, so?”
“She’s changing her will.”
“What do you mean?”
“She’s not only changing it, she’s cutting you out completely!”
“She can’t do that!”
“What are we going to do?”
“I should talk to her, I guess.”
“That won’t work!”
“Why not?”
“Trust me, I know her.”
“Don’t worry, I’m sure she’ll come around,” Patrick stated as he paced the room.
“You don’t understand, she’ll never give us what we want.”
“What do we want, exactly?”
“After the death of your sister, I felt very guilty for not being there for her, for not being a good caregiver.”
“Where are you going with this?”
“Because of my guilt, I paid for the funeral.”
“My mother paid for that, didn’t she?”
“She wanted you to think that, but I paid for it all, not her.”
“I had no idea,” Patrick exclaimed.
“Your mother said that she would pay me back,” Glenda stated.
“Let me guess, she never paid you back, did she?”
“I thought we could get something in the will, but your mother has decided to cut us out of her life.”
“It can’t be true,” Patrick stated.
“Trust me, it’s true.”
Several days later, Glenda barged into Patrick’s office and cried on his delicate shoulders.
“Patrick, it’s horrible!”
“What’s wrong?”
“She’s dead.”
“Who’s dead?”
“Your mother,” she answered.
“That’s impossible!”
“She died of a heart attack.”
“When?”
“This morning.”
“How could this happen?”
“Look on the bright side, at least we get our money.”
“Glenda, how could you say that?”
“I’m sorry, that was rude of me.”
After years of ignorance, Patrick Garfield finally realized the truth. At first, he didn’t want to believe it, but he had to confront reality. In that moment, Patrick realized that his wife was responsible for his mother’s death.
“You killed her, didn’t you?”
“You’re joking, right?”
“You did it, admit it!” Patrick shouted.
“Honey, you’re scaring me!”
“If you don’t admit it, I’ll do more than that.”
“I’ll do no such thing!”
“You killed my sister too, didn’t you?”
“That’s insane!”
“I’m not insane, you are!” Patrick shouted as he grabbed Glenda by the throat.
“I loved them, both of them.”
“Don’t lie to me, understand?”
“Honey, calm down.”
After several agonizing seconds, Patrick released Glenda.
“Sorry,” Patrick said as he doubted himself.
“Besides, even if I did kill them, you can’t prove anything,” Glenda stated as she left the room.
As much as he hated to admit it, Glenda was right. Unlike most murder cases, the two victims died of other causes. One victim was a suicide, the other victim died of a heart attack. As a lawyer, Patrick knew that Glenda could never be charged, not even if she were guilty. Patrick wanted his wife to be innocent, but he could never be sure.
