The first time when chemistry solved my problem
Born 1985, M, from London, Ontario, CanadaThe first time when chemistry solved my problem
I remember the times when my mom was asking my dad to repair the parts of living room’s wall which was damaged because of the rain. That wall was made of soil and straw. My dad was addicted to heroin at that time and he did not give her any attention. I remember the times when one of my eyes was on my mom’s face and another one was on my small hands and I was wishing I was able to do something for her to make her happy. I could feel how much my mom was alone on that time.
One day I came with an idea. I decided to hide those damaged parts of the wall with my Chemistry formula’s which I had to memorize. I was in middle school at that time. I wrote down those formulas on the back of the parliamentary advertisement election posters that we had in our home and I stacked them on our living room’s wall. Now, those damaged parts were covered with those formulas and it was the first time when the chemistry helped me to solve a problem.
Now, my mom had something new to talk about with the girls and women of our neighbours who were coming to our house to help her in carpet weaving or for just gossip, instead of talking about those damaged parts of that wall. It was a question for those women, “What are those notes?” and this time my mom proudly was talking about her son who wants to be a Chemical Engineer in future.
