insects in the garden(Francis W Dawson) The Big Show Adventure


Part One

A long time ago in a garden far away lived some Insects who had been on several, adventures until they lost one of their companions some five years ago, Fred the frog. All the rest of the Insects were getting fat and lazy. Until now Bill the frog said “it’s about time for another adventure”, but by the looks of you lot, it will take some time to get you all in to shape. The next day Bill said “we are going to have some games” the winners will go on the next adventure, the rest will stay at home and get them selves into shape. Now let the games begin, from the Northern part of the garden two spiders, from the Southern part of the garden two Grasshoppers, from the West side two Beatles and from the East side the Bullfrog.
“Your place is reserved” said Bill the frog. The first thing you lot are going to do is run around the garden twice, three hours later the Grasshoppers came in, followed one hour later by the Spiders and the Beatles arriving together. All the rest of the Insects were working-out doing the strangest things, Bill the Frog had seen in all his live. “What on earth is going on here” said Bill the frog “we are creating our own games” replied one of the Insects, as they were all rolling around the garden. Some were wrestling; others were jumping over each other and swimming in the pond.

Around and around the pond swimming in relays, there was one Insect missing, the Dunn-Beatle, he was somewhere in the garden. Even the mice were involved in the games. This was the first time there were involved in any of their adventures, Bill was just sitting there on his rock in the centre of the pond looking all around. By the look of things it would not be long before they were ready to go on the next adventure, then out of nowhere came his


Part Two

old friend Fred the frog. “I thought you were dead” said Bill. “No, I was just stoned and left for dead” he replied. It is about two weeks now and the Insects are ready for another adventure, “there’s a new show in town it’s the first time this has come here” said Bill the frog, “just who is going” said Fred the frog, “are you user you are alright said Bill to Fred “its been a long time since you have been on an adventure” said Bill. I have survived five years with out the help of anyone.

So let’s see just who is ready to go, around the pond were several Insects Spiders, Beatles, Grasshoppers and mice and one Dunn-Beatle, about four seconds later came the Bull-frog, “It looks like a town meeting to me” he said no there are the Insects who are going to the show, replied Bill, “you can count me in” said the Bullfrog.

So off they went with Bill the frog who was up at the front with the Bullfrog followed by the Grasshoppers and the Beatles, bringing up the rear are the Spiders and Fred the frog.

Out of the garden on the pavement all the Insects were waiting for Bill to show them the way across the road, then Bill the frog said “down the street past the third lamppost there is a pipe that goes under the road”. Inside the pipe, two Spiders went to see if the way was clear, it was blocked about half way in back, on the pavement Bill was waiting with the rest, then the Spiders came back out and said “there’s no way through it is blocked”.


There’s only one other way across this road the bridge over the river, down the street, but that way is dangerous, not many have survived the crossing. It was around an hour before all the Insects reached the bridge.

Bill the frog was the first to cross followed by the rest only the Bullfrog was left behind, what is wrong with you shouted Bill, this bridge is not strong enough to take my wait those boards are rotting and the rail is to narrow. Stop there and we will find you another way over or across, but the Bullfrog did not listen and he was on the bridge all was going well until one of the beams gave away he fell into the river. He is a frog he can swim across the river said the Spiders, it was a long way down he might be hurt.

Part Three

The Bullfrog did not survive the fall the river was not deep enough he hit the bottom of the river and into the mud. It was thick and dark, as Bill jumped into the river he cud see the murky water, it was filed with rubbish and weeds. In the darkness of the river Bill the frog knottiest there was movement on the river bed it was a catfish, a big one so he swam to the river side.

On the riverside, where all the Insects were resting then one of the Spiders said “did you find him?” “No it was far to dark down there to see anything we lost him, so are we going on then” said Bill the frog. I think we should go, that’s what the Bullfrog would want. There all set of to the show, that was just over the next hill and through the forest.


Just before the forest the Insects stopped to find a path through it, that night there found a path but there were two of them one going to the left and the other to the right.” Which of the two do we take” said the grasshopper “one party will take the left and one will take the right” said Bill. So Fred went along the left path with half the Insects and Bill went along the right path.

The left side path went all the way through the forest, but the right one stopped at a old shed with an wheel on the side and that was were Bill the frog ran into trouble. With the bigger Insects that lived in the old shed it wisent long before there were sounded by Ants, hundreds of them.

Bill did not won’t, too fight but it looks like there was no way out of it been over powered by the ants Bill and his friends were holding there own. Then out of the mist came Fred the frog and the rest of them but there was still to many of them both Bill and Fred were fighting back to back

It was the Spider who were wining the grasshoppers were olden there own and the beetles where wining to, “this is not the pest place to be at this time” said Bill the frog. Then out of the forest came this strange looking animal and all the Ants ran away. Bill the frog said “what kind of thing was that” it’s an anteater a strange voice from the shed” said going back down the path and there went up the left path.
Part Four

Off they all went with Bill and Fred the frogs followed my all the others, at the rear was the Bullfrog and the Dunn-Beatle, out into the wide open space there was a loud sound that terrified the Insects. Then in the centre was a tent it was about one mile long and so high they could not see the top, inside was all kinds of strange things in one of the apartments was the longest snake they have ever seen and in the others were all kinds of big insects.

“I don’t like this at all” said Fred “there’s nothing to be worried about” said Bill the frog, that night there was a chill in the air and Fred was getting cold so he and Bill went into the river that was at the edge of the opening.
The next morning as the sun was rising there was a loud explosion from inside the main tent. It shuck the entire place, every one was running all over the place, most of the apartments where the insects were, had collapsed all the big insects were on the loose, the snake was feeding on them. Bill the frog said “get all the insects together then meet me by the river.”

It was around noon when the insects were at the river as Bill was looking around he noticed there was a lot of them missing, then Fred came along the river bank he said “where are the rest of them” “I thought you were with them” replied Bill the frog. There were but some of them went off with the Bullfrog and I have no idea were they are now.
We must find them as fast as we can and get out of here said Bill the frog, your over looking one thing there’s still a snake on the lose Bill and Fred split into two separate parties and went looking for them it was a large place to search and they also had the danger of the big snake. In the centre of the show were the rest of them were hiding from the big insects and the snake that was eating them. It was then they came face to face with the snake then a wire mesh was dropped onto the snake and two big and one small men came took the snake away, into the back of a van that had the words serous on the side, that just left the over sided insects, most of them were eaten, “then lets go home” said Fred the frog I agree replied Bill. Off they went on there way home back the way they came around four hours later all the insects were all back in the garden again, Bill and Fred were in the pond.
It was a good two days outing but also dangerous
