32 Facts about the World CUP
Born 2005, M, from Ashton-Under-Lyne, United KingdomThis Will Be The First World Cup Ever With Goal-Line Technology. Finally!
14 cameras will be set up around the rim of each host stadium. 7 of these cameras will focus on 1 goal, where the other 7 will focus on the opposite goal. They are connected to a central mainframe computer which analyses each shot on goal. When the match ball crosses the goal line, the referee will feel a vibration and receive a visual sign stating: “Goal”. How does he feel the vibration and see “Goal”? Simple, by wearing a special watch connected to the mainframe computer.
The technology has been used for the first time during the Confederations Cup 2013 in Brazil. Many of us can remember at least 1 unfair decision during a World Cup match. The Lampard shot in South Africa 2010 for example; the whole world witnessed a beautiful goal except for 1 person, the referee. So it seems those days of pure anger and frustration (or happiness and relief, depends how you look at it), are finally over!
The Local Organisation Committee Includes Five Brazilian World Cup Champions
The Local organisation Commitee is, among other tasks, responsible for promoting the 2014 World Cup and helping to ensure projects reach their deadlines. The Commitee which was formed in January 2013, consists of: Amarildo Tavares da Silva, José Roberto Gama de Oliveira (Bebeto), Carlos Alberto Torres, Marta Vieira da Silva, Ronaldo Luis Nazario de Lima and Mário Jorge Lobo Zagallo.
5 of these ambassadors are a representative for each of Brazil’s FIFA World Cup winning:
Mário Zagallo: 1958 in Sweden
Amarildo: 1962 in Chile
Carlos Alberto: 1970 in Mexico
Bebeto: 1994 in USA
Ronaldo: 2002 in South Korea/Japan
Marta Vieira da Silva is a 5 time FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year: 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010.
Ronaldo stated the following about their duties as ambassadors:
“It’s vital we keep our focus, as ahead of us we have the job of monitoring the stadiums, selecting National Team Training Centres and Official Training Pitches, as well as reaching important milestones like unveiling the Official Slogan and Mascot of the FIFA World Cup.”
It’s The 2nd Time Brazil Will host A World Cup
Yes, after 64 years, the 2014 World Cup will be the 2nd World Cup to be hosted in Brazil. Brazil has hosted the 4th World Cup in 1950, from 24th of June to 16th of July. The stadium Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro was specially built for the 1950 World Cup, and is the only stadium which will be used again for the 2014 World Cup. Find out who has beaten Brazil in the 1950 World Cup Final.
Brazil Is The 5th Country To Host A World Cup For The 2nd Time
First there were the countries Mexico (1970,1982), Italy (1934,1990), France (1938,1998) and Germany (1974,2006) which hosted a World Cup for the 2nd time. Brazil will be number 5 after having hosted the 1950 World Cup.
It Took 36 Years Before South America Will Host A World Cup Again
The last World Cup that was hosted in South America was in 1978. It was Argentina which hosted the 1978 World Cup. Other South American countries which have hosted a World Cup are Uruguay in 1930, Brazil in 1950 and Chile in 1962. The 2014 World Cup in Brazil will be number 5 to be hosted in South America.
Argentina And Colombia Also Showed Interest In Hosting The 2014 World Cup
On March 2003, FIFA announced the 2014 World Cup will be hosted in South America. FIFA used their policy of rotating a World cup to each confederation (continent) in turn which was introduced after the 2006 World Cup. 3 months later in June 2003, CONMEBOL announced Argentina, Colombia and Brazil are interested.
On March 2004 the confederation voted unanimously Brazil would be the best candidate. Both Brazil and Colombia placed a bid in December 2006 but Argentina ultimately backed out. In April 2007 Colombia withdrew and announced they would host the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup instead. On October 30 2007 in Zürich FIFA announced that Brazil, now as the only interested country, will host the 2014 World Cup.
17 Cities Showed Interest In Being A 2014 World Cup Host City
Initially FIFA only allowed for Brazil to use 10 host cities; but CBF (Brazilian Football Confederation) requested permission to use 12 cities. This was granted by FIFA. Aside the 12 host cities, there are 5 who didn’t make it to the list of 12 cities. These cities are: Belém, Campo Grande, Florianópolis, Goiânia and Rio Branco.
For The First Time 2 Consecutive World Cups Are Not Hosted In Europe
Normally after a World Cup has been hosted outside Europe, it was Europe that would host the next tournament 4 years later. However the previous World Cup was hosted in Africa and not in Europe. Only after 2 World Cups (South Africa 2010 and Brazil 2014), it is European country Russia which will host the next World Cup in 2018.
The 2014 World Cup Official TV Opening Is An Animation Video
The Official TV opening is an animation, and shows different parts of Brazil and the World Cup stadiums. The video starts and ends with a small Brazilian boy, who looks impressively when the World Cup creates a spectacle in Brazil. You better get used to it, you will obviously see this animation a lot during the World Cup!
Brazil Will Use Drones and US Robots During The World Cup
In order to ensure the safety of the many people who will visit Brazil and see the matches, Israeli drones will be utilized. These unmanned aircraft will monitor the crowds for defense and security purposes. So called PackBot 510 robots, which are used in the US military, will also be utilized to protect the citizens and tourists. They can be remotely operated and detect and examine suspicious objects or explore dangerous environments.
According to the manufacturer iRobot, the robots perform “multiple missions for troops and public safety professionals, enhancing situational awareness, reducing risk and increasing mission success“.
Aside from the drones and US robots, facial recognition camera glasses, helicopters with night vision and thermal cameras, high tech-surveillance equipment and soldiers from the Brazilian Armed Forces are used to ensure security and protection in the host cities.
2014 World Cup Is The Most Expensive World Cup Ever
No, no expenses are being saved for this World Cup, Brazil wants to organize a never to forget, legendary World Cup. Why you ask? Because the costs so far are 14-16 billion US Dollars! See here the total costs of the last 5 World Cups:
1994 USA:US$ 30 million
1998 France: US$ 340 million
2002 Japan/South Korea: US$ 5 billion
2006 Germany: US$ 6 billion
2010 South Africa: US$ 4 billion
It is interesting to see that the last World Cup in South Africa was less expensive than the 2002 and 2006 World Cups.
But what is really interesting to see, is that the 2014 World Cup is way more expensive than the 2 previous World Cups together, heck, almost just as expensive as the last three World Cups together! The costs include stadiums, transport and security. When reading the news, it is obvious Brazil is investing highly in the infrastructure and decreasing the criminality rate.
As many probably know, the high costs made many Brazilians furious and was one of the main topics Brazilians were protesting immensely about in June 2013.
FIFA Scraps 2014 World Cup Speeches To Avoid Protests
In 2013 FIFA president Sepp Blatter and Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff were booed by football fans at the opening match of the Confederations Cup. The booing relates to the social unrest in Brazil due to corruption allegations and the extremely high cost of the World Cup preparations.
Before the Confederations Cup in 2013, many protesters in many Brazilian cities dominated the streets. Dilma Rousseff is currently not a popular figure to say the least, so therefore FIFA doesn’t want to provoke any protests.
A Paraplegic Teenager Will Take The First 2014 World Cup Kick
The first symbolic kick will not be made by any known or famous person. The first kick of the World Cup will be made by a paraplegic teenager in a mind-controlled exoskeleton suit. The teenager is paralysed from the waist down, but will ‘feel’ the kick due to sensory feedback. He will stand up from his wheelchair, walk over to the midfield and take the very first kick. This marks a very important step in the evolution of technology. This event will show that one day wheelchairs will cease to exist.
Referees Are Allowed To Stop Matches 2/3 Times Due To Weather Conditions
Especially in the northern and northeast cities where the World Cup matches will be played (Manaus, Natal, Fortaleza, Salvador, Recife), the heat can become very intense.
The FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke therefore announced referees are allowed to pause a 2014 World Cup match 2 or 3 times. During these stops, players have the opportunity to hydrate themselves.
Jerome Valcke was not very specific about the anti-heat measures, however he stated it is up to the referees to decide what is best on the day of a match.
Southern cities (e.g. Porto Alegre and Curitiba) will not cause such issues, since months June and July are perceived as the coolest months of the year.
Official 2014 World Cup Song Is Called ’We Are One’
The official 2014 World Cup song will be performed by Cuban rapper Pitbull, ‘Bronx Diva’ J.Lo and Brazilian singer Claudia Leite. This is the 3rd time a World Cup song is performed by Latin artists. The first was Ricky Martin with La Copa De La Vida for the 1998 World Cup. The 2nd was Shakira with Waka Waka for the 2010 World Cup. The single We Are One has been released on April 8 2014. Listen and watch the video!
Official 2014 World Cup Anthem Is Called ’Dar um Jeito (We Will Find A Way)’
Since the 1998 World Cup in France, each World Cup introduced both a song and anthem.
Swedish electro DJ Avicii, guitar legend Carlos Santana, Brazilian Latin Grammy winner Alexandre Pires and Haitian-American rapper Wyclef Jean will perform the 2014 World Cup anthem. They will perform the song live at the World Cup closing ceremony on July 13 in Rio de Janeiro. The single Dar um Jeito has been released in April.
Coca-Cola Official Anthem For The 2014 World Cup Is Called ’The World Is Ours’
Remember Wavin’ Flag sung by K’naan? This was the 2010 World Cup official anthem from Coca-Cola. This time it is American singer David Correy who has the privilege of singing the next World Cup anthem: The World is Ours.
David travels the globe which is part of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour. He will perform concerts along the 89-country route leading up to the World Cup kick-off next June in São Paulo.
More versions exist of this anthem since he has collaborated with several musicians. The name of another version is La Copa De Todos (Our Cup). All versions include the Brazilian percussionist street band Monobloco.
Ricky Martin Performs Winning Song Of World Cup Brazil Sony Contest
On November 15 Sony launched their 2014 World Cup contest: SuperSong. People from around the world were able to submit their song, which Ricky Martin would eventually record! People could vote for their favourite song which eventually could enter the Final round. The Final round consisted of the last 5 contestants. On February 15 Elijah King was announced the winner with his song Vida. Ricky Martin ended up performing the song and a video clip was shot as well! The song will also be included in the official 2014 World Cup music album.
Shakira Recorded Another World Cup Song
2010 World Cup song Waka Waka by Shakira is the 8th most viewed YouTube video!! Yes, the song was very popular and enhanced to the magic and image of South Africa 2010. You wouldn’t be surprised to find out Shakira recorded another World Cup song! The song is named Dare (La La La), and is included in the 2014 World Cup Brazil music album!

France Demanded 2 Types Of Soaps In Each Hotel Room
Many countries announced their special demands when it comes to the hotels and rooms they stay in. Some requests you understand, and some you think….really? But hey! A World Cup is not something anyone can play every year! The right and necessary preparations are needed, which obviously differ per country! Let’s just hope all these demands will contribute to great play and success in Brazil!
The following demands are known:
Portugal demands a console in every room and 6 security guards, 2 of which will be dedicated to look after Cristiano Ronaldo at all times.
France demands for the hotel to replace its bar soap for the liquid variety. Each room needs to contain 2 types of liquid soaps: one for showering and the other for washing their hands. The French football federation also insisted that every player’s room should be identical, down to the colour of the paint.
Uruguay demands silent air-conditioning units in each room.
Algeria demands a Quran in each room.
Ecuador demands a special room where players can unwind, and an every day basket with different types of Ecuadorian bananas in each room.
England demands one of 3 restaurants for their exclusive use, a dedicated video games room with 3 TVs and the latest games, and they want the sole use of the gym and swimming pool for just several hours every day. All their rooms contain brand new furniture, beds, wooden floors, rust-free balconies and air conditioning
Honduras demands the addition of 6 Spanish-language channels to the televisions in each room, including 2 from Honduras.
Japan demands all rooms must have a Jacuzzi.
Australia demands installation of 2 large coffee machines close to their rooms, in an area that must also include a variety of newspapers from around the world. They want Brazilian meals of red meat, fish and chicken, but all cooked within the concept of a healthy diet.
Bosnia and Herzegovina demands an acoustic (sound-proofed) screen. The idea is that players will dine on one side and the coaching staff on the other. This way their conversations will not be mixed.
Switzerland demands Swiss television channels in all the rooms and high-speed internet.
Chile demands new beds and flat screen televisions in every room.
Costa Rica demands a large chill-out room with sofas, televisions and video games.
Colombia asked for 15 lucky youth players to take part in their training sessions.
Germany Built Their Own World Cup Hotel And Training Camp
You may find above demands pretty extreme, but nothing is as extreme as Germany’s solution. In order to have the exact type of rooms, environment, training facilities, press centre, football field, restaurant etc, they simply built their own hotel and training camp in Bahia!
Germany was not impressed by Brazil’s existing facilities, and therefore created a complex which is named Campo Bahia. This complex which is financed by sponsors, provides a village atmosphere which also contains 13 houses and 65 rooms. The complex will be around 15 km away for the nearest airport, which makes it easy to travel to different host cities. After the World Cup, Campo Bahia will be used as a sport and nature resort.
The FIFA World Cup Trophy Embarked On A 267 Day Journey
For the FIFA World Cup Trophy, FIFA and the Coca-Cola Company organised a tour around a total of 90 countries. After the 2006 and 2010 World Cups, this is the 3rd time FIFA and the Coca-Cola Company have organized such an event. This event gives people a chance to have a close-up view of the famous trophy. The opening ceremony took place on the 12th of September at the famous Christ the Redeemer Statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In the month April 2014 the trophy will return again to Brazil.
It is this trophy that will be awarded to the 2014 World Cup champion. The FIFA World Cup Trophy replaced the Jules Rimet trophy after the 1970 World Cup. FIFA started to award the authentic solid-gold trophy in the 1974 World Cup.
A Simpsons Episode Has Been Dedicated To The 2014 World Cup
The famous American series the Simpsons, which is the only 80s series that is still airing, will feature the 2014 World Cup. The title of the 30 minutes episode is “You Don’t Have to Live Like a Referee” and was aired on March 30 2014. In this episode Homer and the family will go to Brazil where Homer is recruited as a referee for the World Cup. His integrity will be put on the test by Brazilian gangsters in the soccer match-fixing business. The cartoon predicts Germany will beat Brazil with 2-0 in the Final…
Aside from the episode, The 20th Century FOX network where the Simpsons is aired, will also create a special line of branded merchandise relating to famous football clubs such as FC Barcelona, Boca Juniors and Sport Club Corinthians. More football clubs are expected to be part of this licensing partnership.
Jeffrey Godsick, president of 20th Century FOX Consumer Products stated the following:
“2014 is the year of soccer with the FIFA World Cup, serving to connect fans from cities, towns and villages around the world to experience the biggest sporting event.“
“This is the perfect opportunity to present a line of soccer merchandise, promotions and content that will leave an indelible imprint on The Simpsons fans around the world.”
FIFA Received A Record Number Of Volunteer Applications
FIFA received a record number of in total 152,101 volunteer applications for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. This amount is more than double the number of applications for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa (70,000). Not only that, the amount is more than triple the total applications for the 2006 World Cup (45,000). Around 6,500 foreigners applied, with the majority being Colombians. Other nationalities which applied in high numbers are Americans, Spaniards, Mexicans and Argentinians.
Brazil Is ‘The Most Expensive Team’ In The 2014 World Cup
According to Pluri Consultoria, Brazil is the most expensive team that will participate in the upcoming World Cup. They based this on calculating the market value. Brazil has a market value of 507,8 million euros. Spain is the 2nd most expensive participant with a market value of 504 million euros and Argentina completes the top 3 with 475,2 million euro market value.
Lionel Messi Is ‘The Most Expensive Player’ In The 2014 World Cup
According to Pluri Consultoria, Lionel Messi is the most expensive player that will participate in the upcoming World Cup. They based this again on calculating the market value. Lionel Messi has a market value of 139,6 million euros. Cristiano Ronaldo is the 2nd most expensive player with a market value of 104,2 million euros and Neymar completes the top 3 with 67,4 million euro market value.
2014 World Cup Champion Will Win 35 Million US Dollars
The amount of 35 Million USD is higher than what Spain, the 2010 World Cup winner won 4 years ago. They claimed an amount of 31 Million USD. FIFA secretary general Jer Valcke stated the runners-up will claim 25 Million USD.
The team winning the match for the third place will win 22 million USD and the 4th place country will win an amount of 20 Million USD. Each country which makes it to the knock-out stage will receive a guaranteed minimum of 8 Million USD.
The total amount of money available for participating countries and clubs will be 576 Million USD. 4 years ago in the 2010 World Cup this amount was 420 Million USD. They will receive a total of 100 million USD for making their players available.
Vanishing Spray Will Be Used To Provide A Temporary Visual Marker
For the first time in World Cup history, vanishing spray will be used by referees in the 2014 World Cup. The water-based spray will be used to mark the position of the ball for a free-kick on the pitch. The spray will also mark the ten-yard line for the defending team during a free kick. This prevents from players to form a defensive wall to close to the ball. The spray appears as a white spot or line that automatically disappears in a minute.
FIFA approved the spray for the 2014 World Cup after this has successfully been used at the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup, 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup and 2013 FIFA Club World Cup.
FIFA Will Ban Players From Showing Messages Under Football Shirts
Secretary general Jérôme Valcke announced that from June 1st 2014, footballers won’t be allowed to display messages underneath their shirt.
Jérôme Valcke stated the following:
“From now on there can be no slogan or image whatsoever on undergarments even good-natured ones. This will apply from 1 June and be in force for the World Cup”

3 World Cup Qualifiers Will Have To Travel More Than 14,000 km In The World Cup
According to Brazilian newspaper Estado de SP, USA, Italy and Mexico are the only countries which will travel more than 14,000 km. Countries will travel in Brazil since the World Cup matches will be played in different cities.
Belgium for example will only travel 1,984 kilometers for their group matches. This is far below the 7,525 km average for all 32 teams. Argentina will only travel 3,590 kilometers for their 3 group matches. Host country Brazil’s air miles are the closest to the 7,525 km average.
Bosnia And Herzegovina Is The Only Country To Have Qualified For The First Time
In the 2010 World Cup every team already participated in a World Cup before. This was the first time this has happened. In the 2014 World Cup Bosnia and Herzegovina qualified for the very first time. They qualified directly and topped group G of the UEFA qualifications.
In their first World Cup they are placed in Group F. Their opponents are Argentina, Iran and Nigeria.
Germany Will Play Their 100th World Cup Match When Playing Portugal
Germany will be the first country which will play their 100th World Cup match. They only need to play their first 2014 World Cup group match against Portugal in order to achieve this. You might think:
Didn’t Brazil play and won more World Cups so therefore should have played more matches?
No, although Brazil won 5 World Cups and Germany only 3, it is Germany which advanced more times to the the Semi-Finals than Brazil. As we know, when a team reaches the Semi-Finals, a next match is guaranteed. This can be the Final or the match for the third place. Germany made it to the Semi-Finals 12 times and Brazil 10 times. Germany also made it to the Quarter-Finals in every World Cup except for 1938. In 1930 and 1950 they didn’t participate.
Brazil was 3 times eliminated in the first round and was 1 time eliminated in the Round of 16. However, Brazil’s amount of World Cup matches is close to the 99 of Germany! Brazil played 97 World Cup matches so far.
Ronaldo Might Lose His Record of 15 World Cup Goals
Former Brazilian footballer Ronaldo is the World Cup top goalscorer with 15 goals. He scored his first goal in the 1998 World Cup group match against Morocco. His last World Cup goal was scored against Ghana in the 2006 World Cup.
A fact is that Ronaldo has played his last World Cup. But there is a player who scored 14 World Cup goals, and will probably play the 2014 World Cup as well! We’re talking about German player Miroslav Klose. He scored his first World Cup goal in the 2002 World Cup group match against Saudi Arabia. If Klose is able to score at least 2 goals in Brazil, he will become the new World Cup top goalscorer.
Honduras And Bosnia And Herzegovina Are The Only Countries Which Have Never Won A World Cup Match
Bosnia and Herzegovina will play their first World Cup in Brazil. So of course they haven’t won any World Cup matches. Honduras though is a different story! Honduras played in the 1982 and 2010 World Cup and have never won a match yet! Will the 2014 World Cup finally be the one where they will get rid of 0 World Cup victories? Time will tell!
No Scandinavian Country Will Participate In World Cup Brazil
Not Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden or Iceland have succeeded in qualifying for the 2014 World Cup. The last time no Scandinavian country succeeded in qualifying, was in the 1982 World Cup.
Norway and Finland were eliminated after Round 1 of the UEFA qualifications. Denmark finished as a runner-up country of group B. Since there were 9 groups in the first round, 1 runner-up country would not advance. It was country Denmark that was ranked as the worst runner-up among all 9 groups.
Only Sweden and Iceland had a chance to qualify indirectly by winning the continental play-offs. However both failed to do so. Croatia defeated Iceland and Portugal defeated Sweden.
2014 World Cup Will be Watched on Multiple Devices
According to a survey by Instant.ly on behalf of YuMe (a provider of digital video brand advertising solutions), the World Cup will be “The Ultimate Multi-Screen Event.” According to the results, watching World Cup matches on multiple devices is important to 46% of respondents. Live-streaming of the matches will also be popular during the tournament.
FIFA Fan Fest Will Be Back For The 2014 World Cup
The FIFA Fan Fests which were officially organised in the 2006 World Cup in Germany will return! FIFA Fan Fests are events organized by FIFA and partners. In these events people can watch the World Cup matches live on big screens with thousands of fans from around the world. After its success in Germany ’06 and South Africa ’10, it was no surprise the Fests will return in the upcoming World Cup.
It all started with the unofficial Public Viewing events in South Korea during the 2002 World Cup which was a great success. FIFA expended the idea to include several cities world wide for the 2010 World Cup.
In the 2014 World Cup FIFA announced they will hold FIFA Fan Fests in each of Brazil’s 12 host cities. They will be held in the following 12 host cities:
Belo Horizonte - Expominas
Brasilia - Taguaparque
Cuiabá - Parque de Exposições

32 Facts about the World CUP(JAMES VARGHESE)
This Will Be The First World Cup Ever With Goal-Line Technology.
