Daily, they would meet and fly their kites from the green hills, around sundown; they met and enjoyed the warmth and silence of each other’s company.
Ivalene Rose was her name; an only child who grew up with her parents who were both doctors. She was now a young woman, an independent individual, finishing off her long years of studies in University. Coming out of University her job opportunities increased as she gained more and more experience and knowledge. However she struggled with choosing which one to accept. Since she was a little girl, she always strived to help people whether they looked sick, handicapped, or had special needs. Most days she stayed with them, and together they would draw pictures. She would talk to them; they would play together and laugh together. She didn’t like it when school teachers would thank her for spending time with the kids. They were her friends. Why would someone need to thank her for having fun with her friends? She never even thought of her special friends as being different. She always thought of herself as being the lucky one. She had the opportunity to have the chance to share moments with her buddies, see them smile, and have a great time with them.
In secondary school she was involved in school committees, ran fundraisers and organized leadership groups. In the late afternoons she would head out for walks. This was the time she usually spent thinking and reflecting. Up the green hills she would walk, all the way to the top of the hill, to see the sun set. This was a relaxing and savoring moment for her. The next evening she set out again, she would repeat this over and over.
This evening her life would remarkably change.
As Ivalene walked the usual path, she saw a red kite, gliding in the air along to the rhythm of the wind. She walked until she reached where the red kite was coming from. She stopped. A young man around her age was holding the string of the kite. They glanced at each other, and almost instantly their eyes locked.
Jake Henderson was his name. They watched the red kite soar, as Jake slowly released more string, the kite flew higher and higher. They both said “Hi,” and introduced themselves to one another. He was an almost to be a University graduate, and a motivational speaker for children. With curiosity Ivalene wondered why Jake was flying a kite. As if on cue to answer her question, he hesitated but spoke, “You’re probably wondering why someone my age is flying a kite.” He told her a story of how his mom always took him out when he was a little kid. In the evenings, together they would fly his red kite. He explained how his mom really enjoyed flying Jake’s kite with him, because kites soared, high. As high as you would allow them to, with the wind it flew, and there were no limits on how high the kite could go. He explained that his mom bought him a red kite, because she said that red is a bright and powerful color, and because red is the color of love. Jake spoke quieter, “My mom loved me a lot. She loved me so much. She believed in me, when I didn’t believe, and almost gave up. She said that, ‘No matter what happens in life, I will always be looking over you. You are hard working and dedicated, and with that you can get anywhere in life you want’.”
Ivalene and Jake stood quietly. Sad, Ivalene glanced and gently smiled at Jake, and replied “That is amazing, Jake.”
She then told him how she loves working with children, and that she comes up here to watch the sun, for the same reason he does, to loosen up, and clear her mind. From that evening, Ivalene and Jake regularly saw one another. Their friendship grew, and they became closer and stronger friends. They spoke of their goals and dreams. They shared with each other their life stories, their experiences and situations.
Three years later, Ivalene and Jake were truly and deeply in love with each other. Jake was a motivational guest speaker who visited schools and spoke to children about his experiences, and what to do when you feel like your whole life is crashing down on you, and the only thing you feel like doing is giving up on life. Ivalene was a child psychologist, and together with Jake, they created an organization for children who were in need of help. Children that were abandoned, children with physical disabilities, and children that were treated badly. It was the child’s decision if they wanted to come to them or contact them. Right from the start they had
a busy schedule to maintain, but Ivalene and Jake wouldn’t shut down or end this organization for anything, in the entire world. When they saw a smile on a child’s face that had absolutely nothing, that smile was their reward.
Ivalene and Jake tirelessly but happily worked, sometimes even over night.
In the evenings when they weren’t working, they would take a walk to the top of the mountain and fly Jake’s kite. One year later, Ivalene and Jake got married. On the hill they stood, enjoying the warmth and company of each other, for they met on this very hill. Hand in hand they stood and with the other hand they held the kite, and flew it together. If it wasn’t for the kite, they wouldn’t have met. The only thing in life you really need is love, knowledge, and to soar high with your dreams; to never give up, and believe in love.
