Trapped
Born 1995, M, from Kentucky, United StatesTrapped
By Joseph Logsdon
They were trapped. The room, dark and damp, frightened them as they realized where they were. As the night passed, they struggled to find a way out, but, ultimately, the door was locked and could never be opened. Like caught animals, they shouted and screamed, hoping that someone would hear them. An hour passed, then two, then three, and finally, four hours went by. At the end of the day, Clark and Laura were trapped.
“Where are we?” Clark asked.
“I don’t know, I just don’t know,” Laura cried.
“What’s the last thing you remember?”
“I was at home, watching my children,” she answered.
“I was in my office, waiting for my girlfriend to arrive,” he replied.
“What’s your name?”
“Clark,” he answered.
“Laura,” she replied.
“So, Laura, how did we end up here?”
“I don’t know, maybe someone kidnapped us,” she stated.
“Who would want to kidnap us?”
“It’s like we’re in some kind of movie,” she nervously laughed.
“Believe me, I wish this were a movie,” Clark replied.
“If someone did kidnap us, what could they possibly want?”
“They want to kill us,” Clark stated.
“Why?”
“If they were inviting us to dinner, I’m sure they would’ve been a little more polite, don’t you think?”
“Sorry, I was just trying to be optimistic,” she replied.
“On a day like this, you don’t need to be optimistic,” he grunted.
“So, what are we going to do?”
“Someone definitely put us in this room, we just have to wait and see who it is,” he answered.
“That is a terrible idea!”
“Well, do you have a better one?”
“We could find a way to escape, couldn’t we?”
“As good as that sounds, it won’t work. Not only is the door locked, but the room is dark, empty, and dirty. Also, in case you haven’t noticed, it’s freezing in here!”
“So, are we just supposed to sit and wait?”
“Unless you have a better plan, we’ll have to wait,” he stated.
Laura, knowing that Clark was a complete stranger, fell into his firm arms. She wanted, more than anything else, to be loved.
“Hold me,” she requested.
“Is something wrong?”
“As a child, I was afraid of dark rooms, so afraid that I slept with a light on until I got married. Even after that, I was still afraid. My husband, drunk and cruel, left me a few years ago. Ever since then, I’ve been raising my children on my own. Sometimes, I feel that I’m just not meant to be a mother. Sure, they love me, but they don’t respect me. Now, don’t get me wrong, I love what I do, it’s just that I feel that what I do isn’t enough. You understand what I’m saying, don’t you?”
“Sure, I understand. You see, Laura, even though I don’t have any children, I’ve always wanted them. My girlfriend, sadly, decided to get an abortion. I tried to stop her, but, in the end, she did what she thought was right. If you really think about it, the justice system doesn’t make any sense. Sure, they’ll say that it was murder if a man kills a pregnant woman, but, if a mother kills her own unborn child, that’s somehow acceptable. I wish, more than anything, that she could pay for her crime. I don’t want revenge, I only want her to suffer the same pain that I felt. That way, everyone has suffered, not just me. Does this make sense to you?”
“Believe it or not, it makes perfect sense,” she replied.
Suddenly and without warning, the door opened. The nurse smiled as she walked into the cold, damp room.
“Who are you? Why are you keeping us here?”
“Time for you to take your medicine,” the nurse stated.
“Medicine? What are you talking about?”
“Clark, did you lose your memory again?”
“What are you talking about?”
“Well, I guess I’ll have to call the psychiatrist,” the nurse stated.
“Psychiatrist? Why would you call a psychiatrist?”
“Well, you see, you’ve been in our care for many years,” she answered.
“Are you saying, that all this time, we’ve been in a mental hospital?”
“I’m afraid so,” she answered.
“This can’t be happening,” Laura whimpered.
“Come on, Laura, you were making such progress,” the nurse stated.
“Why are we here?”
“You mean, you don’t remember?”
“What are we supposed to remember, exactly?” Clark asked.
“Well, a few years ago, you murdered your girlfriend,” the nurse stated.
“That can’t be true!”
“Laura, you murdered your children,” the nurse informed.
“I would never hurt them,” Laura exclaimed.
“Apparently, since you couldn’t be a good mother, you decided to be the worst mother imaginable,” the nurse stated.
“It can’t be true, it just can’t be true,” she cried.
“I feel like I’m going to die,” Clark stated.
“You see, after these very traumatic events, both of you decided to forget about them,” the nurse stated calmly.
“So, let me guess, we’re both committed, aren’t we?”
“Yeah, it’s not like we enjoy keeping you here.”
“Don’t worry, with any luck, I’ll be dead in the morning,” Clark stated.
