The Final Call
Truth. The beginning and end of a lie. We all tell lies, like telling your parents you finished your homework so you can go out with friends, when you didn’t. Or telling a friend you can’t hang out because you're busy, when really you're just not in the mood for it. We do things like this to spare feelings and to not look like the “bad guy” because it's much easier to tell a lie to make one feel good about themselves than to tell a truth that could ruin their self esteem. What if the truth could save and the lie could ruin?
Every time someone tells the truth a new future is born. Truth is rare. In this story, whenever a truth is told, a beautiful gift of goodness is given. When a lie is told, something bad is delivered.
The final game before the championship. We have been training for a while now and we are more than ready. We won our first game and if we win our next one we will go to the finals! Our team has won the last three mini-world cup tournaments for soccer and we really want to make that three into a four.
Beeeeeeeep. The whistle blows. The game starts. Our team starts off very well with a two-zero lead, but our team got too confident and cocky and we started letting goals in left and right, before we knew it it was 2-2. There are a lot of calls, because of pushing and fouls. As well as people getting carded. Once I got carded because I went to slide tackle a girl and when I got there to steal the ball she had already gotten rid of it but I couldn't stop in mid-slide so I ran into her causing her leg to bend in backwards as she fell and she ended up breaking her tibia. I felt really bad, especially because her leg already had problems, I’m assuming because she was wearing a knee brace, and I didn't help, in fact I made it worse. Back to the game, we have been waiting all year for this tournament so there was no way was I going to lose.
By the end of the first half, the team was pretty tired and we were running on pure adrenaline. But we couldn’t stop playing hard, it wouldn't be fair to the other team or to us. We as a team need to play together and play hard for forty-five more minutes. We got this.
The final play of the game, I got a breakaway, running down the field with just the goalie and a defender keeping me from the net, I shoot, the defender goes for the ball and it almost hits her hand. The referee blows the whistle, “did you see her hit the ball with her hand?” he asks the other referees and then me. I didn't see her hit the ball with her hand, in fact she didn’t hit it at all, she wasn't even close, but I really want to win, so I reply saying “yeah she hit the ball with her hand, it was close but she definitely hit it”. The referees discuss until they come to the conclusion that my team gets a free kick. I kick, sending the ball to the top left corner, I make it! Finals here we come!
We have a day until the next game, so after our game we go to dinner as a team. At the restaurant we got into a water fight, I threw water at a girl on my team, because she brought up the memory of when I once fell down the stairs at our high school in front of everyone, it was so embarrassing, causing her to throw it back. I didn't want to get hit so I tried to run, but as I was running I slipped on the water that was previously split and I fell hitting my head on the ground, I didn't have enough time to get my arms out so my head hit the ground and bounced up. It was bad. The parents take me to the hospital and they come to the conclusion that I have a concussion and a neck sprain and I can’t play for at least a month. I'm so bummed, because I can't play the final game tomorrow.
The next day we go to the game to try to win the whole tournament! I can't play but I cheer on my team! By the 15 minute mark of the end of the game we are losing 1-0. We only need two goals to win. I want to win really bad but I lied, about the girl touching the ball with her hand during the second game, she didn't and I said she did, so we shouldn't be here. I took the chance away from someone else. I have to tell the truth, but I don't want to ruin the game for my team. I don't know what to do.
I decide to talk to the ref and tell him what I did. He told me, they know I lied and it's not right but it worked out okay because the ref was a coach for the team we were playing, he was playing the game in their favor, and no one realized until after the game, we both cheated but they got disqualified and we got to continue. I'm disappointed I lied but I'm happy it didn't ruin the team's chance to play the final game.
We win the tournament and everyone is excited! I learned my lesson not to lie, but to always tell the truth. Apparently there were scouts at the game and they saw me play, they want me to try or for a college scholarship! I'm so excited! But I can only do that if my head heels and I can play by the time the tryouts roll around, as well as never lying again. The game means so much to me, I would lie and ruin others dreams to get to the top, I need to remember I’m not the only soccer player around.
