LOVED AND LOST
Born 1969, F, from Midleton, IrelandLOVED AND LOST
Diana was the daughter of the local parish vicar. She was brought up strict. Her mother died two years ago when she was just sixteen. From then on she had to do all the cooking for her father and the housework. Her father never believed in hiring outside help.
On very rare occasions she was allowed to go to a dance but this was done with much grudgery from her father. It was on one of these very rare occasions that she met Matthew. Di was smitten by him. They danced on a few occasions that night. They parted company after their last dance was over. Matthew thanked Di for their last dance. They lost track of each other for the rest of the night. It was John who walked her home. He was a local boy whom she had grown up with.
Diana couldn’t get Matthew out of her mind but it was to be another month before she was allowed out to another dance but much to her dismay Matthew wasn’t there. So it was John who was walking her home again that night. On the way home Di asked John if he would do her a favour. He said he would be happy to oblige. She asked John if he would ask her father if he could go to the dance with her again next week. He could pretend to be her boyfriend. Diana’s father knew John and liked him. In actual fact he knew all of John’s family.
During the week John obliged. He called to the priest home. He was greeted by the priest. When John put the proposal to him the Priest David had no objections. John said he would collect him Diana at seven PM on the Saturday evening. All was arranged. Saturday came and John picked Diana up and David wished them good luck.
As the dance didn’t start until nine pm they had two hours to spare so John asked if she would like to have a drink with him in a local hotel. Diana was happy to accept only for him she might not have been allowed out to the dance.
While John was sipping his pint and Diana was sipping her mineral water Matthew happen to come into the bar. They talked for a while. Diana told Matthew that she was going to the dance but she would be going with John but John wasn’t her boyfriend. She explained about how strict her father was.
That was the ice broken. It was now up to Matthew. Matthew went back to the friends he had come with. When Matthew left Diana asked John if he knew who he was or where he came from but John had no idea but suggested that she ask him later at the dance.
When Diana and John were coming out of the hotel when they saw Matthew driving away in a big BMW car. Did you see that said Diana to John. He must have a very good job to be able to drive around in a big car like that. They both went off to the dance.
Diana and John danced several times that night but half ways through the night while sitting at the table Diana felt a hand on her shoulder. Care to dance the voice said. Diana looked up to see Matthew standing behind her. They danced for the rest of the night and John went and found his own company.
When the dance finished Matthew drove her home. On the way home Diana asked Matthew all sorts of questions which Matthew answered. He thought to himself a couple of little white lies won’t matter for the time being. He said his name was Matthew Baldwin which was true. He said he worked for a construction firm. They arrived at Diana’s home and he kissed her goodnight and made a date for the following week.
The week went by in a daze for Diana. Then it was Saturday once again. David refused to let his daughter to go to the dance but Diana wasn’t going to let her father spoil her date. She managed to sneak out of the house and met Matthew. After a few months she finally told her father about Matthew. Her father insisted on meeting him so a date was set.
At six pm that Sunday Matthew arrived for tea as was expected. At the end of the evening Di’s father walked Matthew to the door. He told Matthew that he would be glad to have him date his only daughter. Matthew thanked him. The following day Matthew phoned Diana and made a date for that evening. At this point Matthew was sure that Diana loved him for himself. At seven pm they met at their usual place. During the course of the evening Matthew invited Diana to meet his parents. Diana was delighted to accept the invitation and the date was set for Wednesday evening.
Wednesday came and Diana went and got her hair done. Matthew picked her up at six pm. It was the best part of an hour’s drive to his home. Diana thought Matthew was kidding around when he drove the BMW into the driveway of a mansion but when he stopped at the front door and was greeted by a man servant. The man servant called him Matthew. Diana knew it was no joke. They were led into the library where Matthew’s parents were waiting. All greetings over they sat for dinner. Diana was well accepted. Later at ten pm Matthew’s parents retired for the night. Now Diana could ask the questions she wanted to ask all night.
She asked why he hadn’t told her that his family was so rich and why such a rich man would want a poor vicar’s daughter. Matthew explained all his reasons to her. First he said he wanted to make sure that it was him that she wanted and not his money. Secondly he chose her because of her beauty and he was fed up of girls wanting him just for his money. Matthew drove Diana home she was very quiet. Matthew asked her what the problem was and she told him that she needed time to think. For the next month Diana refused to meet Matthew but for that month she pinned him so then she knew the money had nothing to do with it. It was him she really wanted. She phoned and they got together. The wedding was arranged for the following July. It was now June so lots had to be done.
It was agreed that Diana’s father would marry them as they were both of the same church. July came and so did the wedding day. All went well and they were married at twelve pm. Then it was off to America for their honeymoon. They stayed for a month and when they came home Diana was pregnant.
All of the past two years were pure bliss. Matthew Junior was a year and a half. Diana and Matthew got up one morning and as they did on many occasions they went horse riding. They lived in Matthew’s parent’s home while their own home was being built. But on this morning things were to go mighty wrong. They had been out for three hours and they were after having a picnic. Now they were on their way back to the ranch. Diana galloped off on her horse with Matthew in hot pursuit. Diana’s horse jumped the ditch. Matthew’s horse jumped the ditch but fell on landing. He fell on top of Matthew and broke Matthew’s back. Quick as a flash Diana was back at the ranch and the ambulance was called for. Within fifteen minutes the ambulance was at the scene. Matthew was rushed to hospital he was there for sixteen months and recovered except he had to use a walking stick. Diana cared for him over the next two years.
Then Matthew complained of pains in his back at first he didn’t take much notice of it but as time was going on the pain was getting worse. Diana told him to go and have it checked out which he did. It was decided that he should have some tests done. As the results of the tests it was discovered that due to the accident he had developed a malignant tumor. He was told that he wouldn’t last more than eighteen months. So Matthew and Di decided rather than sit at home and mope they would do all the things in life that they could. They went to Europe and lots of horse riding as that was one of Matthew’s loves. They learned to fly a plane and anything they could do they did.
Matthew junior was now nearly four years of age. They explained to him why daddy had to go back into hospital and that god wanted him to be with him in heaven.
Matthew was brought into hospital his condition was very serious. He asked Diana to bring him in a tape recorder and some blank tapes. Diana didn’t question him. Two weeks later Matthew was in a coma. He died at three pm the following day. Diana brought home his belongings and then came across the tapes. They were marked from one to four. Diana played them and what she heard almost broke her heart.
While in a lot of pain Matthew had poured out his love for Diana and Matthew Junior. He was buried three days later. Diana moved into the house that was being built for them next door to Matthew’s parents. She never met anyone else as Matthew was the only man she could love.
