EGO- A necessary Evil
Born 1999, M, from Chennai, IndiaEGO-A NECESSARY EVIL
“Your son is extremely disrespectful to his friends and teachers, Sir”. These are the words a parent would never like to hear. But, here I am, sitting in front of headmistress of the school my son is studying and listening to those. Before I continue the narration, let me tell you who I am. Who am I? Well, honestly nobody. Just another middle class man, a single dad of two sons, one of whom I adopted after the death of my wife. Now, that’s enough about me. Back to the story....
My son standing beside me, hands crossed and with a calm look on his face. This is the second time this month, my son has been suspended from the school. Not only the headmistress, but, even I was losing my temper.” What the hell is your problem son?! I can’t come every day to your school and listen to your mischievous doing all day!”, I was shouting at my son, while going back to home in car. We reached home, my son never spoke a word, just went inside the room, and locked his door. It was dinner time, and I knocked on his door. He opened, and was still holding a grudging face against me. After realizing that I should deal with the situation calm, I approached him in the most affable manner possible at the moment. “ Son, please do share with me your feelings. I am your Dad and I love you. I will make sure to solve whatever your problem is. Why are you disrespecting your teachers and friends at school? Mind you, friends are very important in life. Now tell me, what is your problem?” He was silence for a while and then spoke in a rather angry tone, “You are my problem, Dad! You are! You never give importance to me since my mom died. You always take care of your adopted son only”! I thought for a while and spoke again. “ He is your brother”. My son blasted at me frustrated, “ No he is not. He is just some stupid boy you adopted and I want him kicked out of our house right now”. My son was losing his calm. I waited for him to calm down. I started speaking again, “ I have a solution for your problem son, But, I will tell you a story and you will find the solution in it, deal?” My son nodded positively.
There were 2 close friends, named, Ram and Ravi. Ram was a very rich boy, his father owned a factory and a couple of other business. While Ravi, was the son of the housemaid working at Ram’s house. They became thick friends since childhood, and Ram’s dad started to finance the education of Ravi. Ram and Ravi both shared a immense emotional bond. Though, they had a few dissimilarities in the their character. Ram never focused on studies, not because he was not able to, just because his father is rich and he doesn’t have to. While, Ravi, on the other hand, excelled in academics. He topped the class in each and every exam. This was never a issue for Ram, until, during the result of 12 th examinations, when Ravi was awarded the “ Outgoing student of the year award” for his outstanding academic performance at school. This is wear, Ram started to have a bit of hatred towards Ravi. The years went on, and they both did university, and as evident, Ravi excelled there as well. Ram was barely able to clear all the papers. But what was going through Ram’s mind was, his father was a great business and he will make sure to handle him the CEO of company post regardless of how he studies. But his father had other ideas! His father had been closely watching his studies and compared it with Ravi’s. One day, he called both Ram and Ravi to his office. While Ram was confident is Dad was going to tell him the sweet news of making him the CEO of company, his dad gave that position to Ravi! This made Ram devasted. He shouted at his dad and his dad replied, “ This post is only for people who deserve it, and clearly, you don’t. Now get out and search for other jobs”. This reply from his dad was unexpected and Ram abused his dad with words and thrashed a few glasses inside the office and went away. As days went, Ravi was shining as the CEO of the company, contributed immensely to the growth of it and got married finally. While, Ram had become a drug addict, and a alcoholic. His dad was unable to control him. One unfortunate day, Ram was too much in a serious condition and was admitted to the hospital. He needed a heart transplant immediately to survive. The report suggested that the drugs he took all these years have damaged his heart. Ram’s dad was broken to hear this. After Ravi heard this unfortunate message, he visited Ram at the hospital, and tried to console Ram’s dad. The time given to Ram was just a couple of days, and even Ram was sure that he would die.
After a couple of days......
The operation was complete. Ram slowly opened his eyes, found his dad sitting by his side, crying. His dad was happy to see his son back alive. But, Ram was unsure of how he survived. “ Dad, I should be dead. But I’m not. How?!”. His dad replied in a deep sorrowful voice, “Your friend saved your life”. Ram was puzzled. His dad spoke again ,” Yes, your friend, Ravi, saved your life by giving you his heart”. Ram was teary eyed hearing to that. He couldn’t believe that Ravi had so much affection for him, and he was even ready to sacrifice his life for him. The only thing Ram had with him now was guilty. If it was not for the Ego, he and Ravi would have led a happy life. Now , he lost his friend because of his ego. And he alive, because of the sacrifice of his friends. While Ram was talking all this to his dad,Slowly, the door opened , and a young boy was staring at Ram and his dad.
I passed the story at this point, and my son was looking at me with tears in his eyes. “Dad, who is Ram”, he asked. I told him “Ram” is sitting in front of you and he is the one, who is telling this story. My son was broken in tears. I continued, “ Yes, my dear son, I am Ram”. My son couldn’t believe. “Then, who is that boy who entered the room?”. I replied, with broken voice, and tears in my eyes, “ That’s your adopted brother. He is Ravi’s son, the man who saved my life by sacrificing his.”
My son was broken. He couldn’t believe his ears. I continued, That’s a real story son. That’s the story of my life. I cannot kick your brother out of the house. His dad saved my life. Now, the best I can do is, take good care of him and give him a successful life his dad would have given him. “ You can have millions of friends, but it is difficult to have one friend who will stand by your side when millions are against you”. I had a friend like that, and I lost him. Reason. MY EGO.
One thing is for sure son. Ego is necessary at times, it might make you perform better in life. But if it is too much, it is the most evilest thing you will ever encounter in your life. Now, I hope you got the answer for your question son. Good night.
