Abby looked out at the backyard from the window. She observed the huge, green trees that grew on the dirt, the blooming flowers that grew next to the trees, and the big piece of grass that covered the rest of the area. Every time Abby looked at the backyard, she thought that it was missing something. Abby wanted a big slide on the grass or a mini swimming pool that could cover the whole backyard instead. But her parents were too busy to install a water pool or order a slide, and they thought it was too costly. Abby sighed and walked away from the window to get a drink of water. Just as she left, she heard something crash onto the grass. She ran back to the window to see an odd-looking spaceship that was shaped like an oval and had wings extending out.
The spaceship was badly damaged from the crash. Smoke was billowing from the windows of the spaceship. The wings were dented and defective. Whoever drove the spaceship must’ve been a bad pilot, Abby thought. I wonder who flew the spaceship! Abby started to look for the pilot.
“Hello? Is anyone there?” Abby asked. Her own voice echoed through the backyard. It seemed as if Abby was talking to no one. Abby sighed and tried again. “Hello? If you’re the one who drove the spaceship, please show yourself!”
A creature slowly emerged from the spaceship. Dust filled the air and Abby strained to have a good look at the pilot. After a minute of silence, Abby could see a pink creature with one eye, staring at her. The creature had no arms or legs, and it was shaped like a dome. It started to bounce towards Abby.
“Hello!” the creature started to speak. “My name is Bubbles. Nice to meet you! My spaceship ran out of fuel and crashed into Planet Earth. Is there any way you can help me?”
Abby immediately thought: RUN. She started to dash out of the backyard and ran back into the house, slamming the transparent door that led outside. She looked behind and saw no sign of Bubbles. Abby sighed with relief and started walking back into the living room, hoping that the weird-looking alien would somehow vanish from her backyard.
“Hey! Why are you leaving so fast?” Bubbles suddenly shouted.
“I have some work to do,” Abby replied.
“Aww! Do you have any boogles then?” Bubbles asked.
“What are boogles?” Abby asked.
“They are soft and bouncy,” Bubbles explained, “and you’ll bounce up after you chew them five times.”
Abby walked to Bubbles. “This is the human world, Bubbles, and there’s no such thing as boogles or any other odd-sounding candy you have in your world.” she said.
“Well, can you at least let me in your shelter?” Bubbles asked. “I’m not used to the extreme cold here in Planet Earth. At my home planet, it’s 80 degrees in winter! Anyways, can you just let me in?”
“Absolutely not. I don’t know what you’ll do to the house!” Abby replied.
“Please?” Bubbles opened his eyes wide. “I want to see what your shelter is like! I’m experiencing something you humans call “curious”. Plus, do not forget that I’m freezing here.” Bubbles started to shiver.
Abby sighed. “Okay. MAYBE I’ll let you in. My parents are out working anyway.”
“YAY!” Bubbles said. “Now let me in.”
Abby put her hand on the doorknob to open the door. Just as Abby turned the doorknob, she suddenly started to hesitate. She didn’t know what Bubbles would do to the house. Maybe he’ll keep it as tidy as it was? Or will he wreck the whole place? But at the same time, Bubbles looked harmless to Abby. After several seconds of thinking, Abby opened the door.
Bubbles raced in the house and breathed a sigh of relief. “Your shelter is much warmer than the outside!” he exclaimed happily.
“I’m going to get some tools from the shed so you can fix your spaceship and go home,” Abby said. “Try not to cause any trouble.”
“Thanks for the help,” Bubbles said, “and I won’t cause any trouble.”
********
Abby came back with a box full of tools and led Bubbles into the backyard. “So, what did you do while I was gone?” Abby asked. “Nothing mischievous, right?”
“Nah,” Bubbles replied, “I just looked around for a bit. I bounced on one of your sofas and ate some food.”
“What exactly… did you eat?” Abby asked.
“Well, I found a little package on the table that said “Snickers”. I opened the package and found some candy in wrappers. I took a piece, opened it, and ate the candy inside it! It was delicious.”
“I guess eating a piece of candy wouldn’t hurt much,” Abby said. “Plus, we should start working.”
“Okay. I’m excited!” Bubbles replied.
Abby and Bubbles spent the next few hours fixing the spaceship. Abby helped Bubbles by handing him the tools (and getting refreshments), while Bubbles tinkered with the parts, one by one. After a few hours of hard work, the spaceship was fixed. Bubbles and Abby admired their work.
“Thank you for helping, human!” Bubbles said.
“Oh! After all this time, I didn’t introduce myself! I’m Abby, by the way.”
“We should be saying our goodbyes. Farewell, Abby!”
“Farewell.”
Bubbles bounced into the spaceship. He started to press some buttons and the door to the spaceship closed. In a matter of seconds, the spaceship started to hover up. Abby waved at Bubbles as he started to fly up into the sky. The spaceship flew farther and farther up and Abby eventually lost sight of it.
Abby looked back at the backyard. She could see the huge piece of grass the spaceship had covered before. Abby felt that the backyard was empty again and sighed. Well, at least Bubbles successfully launched the spaceship! Abby thought. Let’s feel happy for Bubbles right now and stop feeling so negative.
Abby walked back into the living room. She saw a sticky note on the table and picked it up. It said:
I shared a boogle with you! Try it. Be sure to chew it five times! -Bubbles!
There was a plastic bag on the table that had a piece of round-shaped candy in it. Abby took the candy and put in in her mouth. She chewed on it five times like Bubbles instructed and immediately bounced up to the air. Abby started to laugh. She had to admit that Bubbles was the most funny alien she ever met. Abby got back to the ground and plopped onto the sofa, smiling brightly.
It was nice meeting you, Bubbles, Abby thought.
