THERE IS A GHOST IN MY CLOSET
Born 1953, F, from Lyons, Michigan, United StatesThere is a ghost in my closet. Should I tell my mom and dad? No, they wouldn't believe me. I told them about the monsters under my bed and they said there were no monsters under my bed. But I knew they were there. They would just leave whenever mom or dad would show up.
The first night I saw my ghost in my closet I was scared, but I knew I couldn't wake up mom and dad, they would just get mad at me, so I decided to talk to my ghost in my closet. My ghost looks like my grandmother, Nellie, I had only met once when I was 4 years old. I am now 8 and I can still remember it. I remember Grandma's homemade bread and pie and how the smell of them was all through the house, it was so nice and made you feel all warm inside.
Grandma was a short woman about 5 foot. She had salt and pepper hair and she wore it in a bun at all time. She also had this flowery, ruffle apron on. Grandma loved to cook and she was a good cook. Everyone loved to eat her cooking. And she always wore red lipstick too.
I asked my ghost, "are you grandma Nellie?", and she just stared at me with a blank stare. So I woke up my sister Nikki that shared a room with me and asked her if she saw the ghost in the closet. She said she did and asked the ghost if she was Grandma Nellie. At first the ghost just stared at us blankly and then answered us, "Yes, I am Grandma Nellie. I was surprised that you could see me". She was looking at us with a smile now and she spoke very softly. She said she was here to look after us as long as we needed her. I said that I hear lots of noises outside my window at night and is that ghosts too? She said, no, that it was different animals, woodchucks, cats and bats, and you don't need to be afraid. I asked grandma, how long will you be in our closet, and she said as long as she feels she is needed.
Well we spent many nights talking with grandma. She told us how to make homemade bread and cherry pie and how to crochet. We had tea parties together and sang songs with her. Her favorite song was, Jesus Loves Me, but ours was, America The Beautiful, and that 'Oh Say Can You See' song.
She would tell us stories of her life, and sang to us until we went to sleep. We just loved having grandma in the closet.
Grandma had a beautiful voice we loved hearing her sing, and she spoke so softly and was so gentle. One night we had fallen asleep listening to grandma singing and it seemed we were asleep a long time when she woke Nikki and I up.
"Missy Missy get up!"
I woke up. "What grandma?"
"Get Nikki and Billy and wake up your mom and dad and leave the door open and I will get your cat and dog out. You must go, go now."
"why?"
"The back porch is on fire! Go get out go now."
So I did. I woke up mom and dad, and Nikki grabbed Billy, and we went to the tree we were told to go to if there was a fire. Mom and dad joined us and asked us how we knew there was a fire in the house. We said that grandma Nellie told us. And true to her word, she had Sassy our cat and Rip our dog at the tree with us. Dad was a volunteer fireman, and we lived right across from the fire barn, so he went in and got the fire truck and set off the alarm for more help to come. They managed to put the fire out and save the house.
We lived with my moms mom and dad, grandma Evelynn and grandpa Wayne, for a few months before we moved back into the house.
We didn't see Grandma Nellie much after that. But we were sure glad we had a ghost in our closet and that it was grandma Nellie.
