Tranquil Vista
Born 1938, M, from Silicon Valley, United StatesWrote 8-3-20, read 11-28-20, 10-14-21, 1-18-22
“George! By golly, I haven’t seen you in a coon’s age. You’re looking good.”
“Hey, Bob, I lost my Betty since I last saw you.”
“Oh no. I’m so sorry to hear that. She was a sweetheart. How long ago?”
“Two years now.”
“I’m so sorry.”
“Yeah. I’ve just been out to the cemetery. Been going there every day.”
“Sure, sure. Well, Veronica’s been gone seven years now,” said Bob.
“Been that long, has it?”
“Yeah. Still miss her like blazes. Think about her all day long.”
“Me too. But when I visit her it feels like she’s right there with me.”
“I haven’t been to see Veronica in a while now. Movin’ on.”
“She’s at Tranquil Vista too?”
“Yeah. I love the place,” said Bob, “Should get out there more often. Be there myself before you know it.”
George didn’t say anything.
“Well, Bob, I’d better get going. Told Betty I’d look in on her folks.”
“Good for you for still doing that. You’re going back to the cemetery this afternoon?”
“Told her I would.”
“She can’t hear you, you know that, George.”
“Sure she can.”
“Dead’s dead, you’ve got to realize that.”
“No, she hears me. And talks back to me too. Doesn’t Veronica talk to you?”
“Sorry, George, I don’t believe in life after death.”
“You don’t?”
“No. Sometimes I wish I did, but I don’t.”
“Well, that’s a real shame.”
“Gotta get on with life.”
“Sorry you feel that way. (pause) Well, Bob, I’ll see you when I see you.”
“So long, George. I’m really sorry about Betty.”
“Thanks, Bob.”
Later…
“Ran into Bob today.”
“Gosh, I haven’t thought about him in ages. How is he?”
“He’s looking good. Veronica’s been gone for seven years now.”
“Has it been that long? Where is she?”
“Buried here at Tranquil Vistas.”
“That right? I didn’t know that.”
“Bob doesn’t believe in ghosts.”
“You asked him that? Why’d you do that?”
“He offered.”
“Well, don’t you go asking people that. Anyway, its late, we should go to bed. Night sweetheart.”
“ ‘Night, Betty.”
They lay back on their graves and slowly faded into the ground.

01/27/2022Thanks Gail. It's funny, I hadn't thought of that as a memorable part of the plot, but, by golly, I guess it is.
