Community Service
Born 1982, F, from Danville, IL, United StatesAs most of you know I am a stay at home mom, so why let the good moments pass me by when I can write about my foolish ways, silly triumphs, and personal horrors (ahem, batteries in my coffee). But something gets to you, something inside eventually snaps, when you have been around children so long you start to act like them in all your silliness and.... in arguments and moments of anger. These times can be quite embarrassing in fact, especially when another adult is watching you when you are the mother of three.
So I was on my college campus yesterday when I saw an ad for earning a scholarship for doing community service. That's wonderful because I am already signed up for community service, I think to myself. I had signed myself and Aaron up for some grounds work at a local business just the day before. I thought he would like spending the time with me, the hard work would teach him I what couldn't by talking to him, and I would learn about gardening at the same time! Screw two birds at once, I got three!
So here I am in my state of excitement, I examine the ad more closely to determine what building I can get information from. The whole campus seems in dissaray, new buildings going up and offices moving for the next quarter. Having gotten caught in the net of being bounced from one side of the campus to another I decided to check the information with the counseling center. A girl from my program was running the counter, not one of my favorite people but tolerable. I smiled tightly and asked politely, she smiled, happy to see me, and confirmed the information, building 7 room 49. Uncomfortable with the confirmation from the Flake Queen, but eager to leave, I scooped up Kiki and beckoned to Aaron and hit the pavement.
The building was 7 which was the library right behind the Oppguard Center. It was a little bit of a walk but nothing I couldn't handle. When i arrived I looked around by myself, determined not to ask for help. To my dismay I soon learned there was no room 49 in building 7. Damn that stupid girl! Ok, I asked the nearest employee I could find. She politely told me what I had just found out on my own. I was antsy, the clock was ticking on a Friday. It was already 4:45pm, and the whole campus closes down before night classes at 5:00pm. She said it was in room 29 on the outside of the building. I sighed and said a quick thank you as I rushed from the building, trying desperately to keeping Aaron by my side the whole time. Outside there was an event going on preventing me from going the short distance to the room, instead I had to all the way around the Oppguard Center instead of ten feet to the left. When I finally arrived the lights were dark. i took a huge leap of faith and tried the door. It was locked! That was it. That was when I snapped.
"AAAAAaaaargh!!!" and I kicked the door, not hard enough to break anything but hard enough to be inappropriate.
I looked up.....
to see movement......
and the DIRECTOR of the program came to the door and said, "Can I help you?"
What could I do? I apologized profusely. It sounded like dribble to me. Empty words.
So I got the information only to learn I was ineligible, on top of everything.
